MBA/PhD• The School of Business features 2 academic honorary programs, called our MBA/Ph.D

distinctions.– (Mastery of Business Achievement and A Personal Higher Degree)

• MBA Student Requirements (students inducted into the NY State Business Honor Society):– Students must receive an A- (B+ for College Accounting I & II, College Business Law & E-Commerce) or better

in three units of Business courses. – Actively participate in one of the department’s clubs for at least one year (DECA or School of Business Club)– Compete in one Business Olympics event– Uphold the School of Business Code of Conduct.

• In 2011 we had 76 candidates for the Honor Society; in 2012 we had 80 students who were candidates for Honor Society.

• Ph.D. Student Requirements (Students may pursue the Ph.D after they have received their MBA):– Students must take three additional Business courses– Complete a research paper relating the Business courses taken to a post secondary career goal – OR complete an additional two credits in Business and compete in an additional Business Olympics.

• In 2011 we had 10 candidates for the Ph.D; in 2012 we had 14 candidates for the Ph.D.

Business Olympics• A Marketing Competition with emphasis on

presentation skills for School of Business Students.• Students form teams of 3 to 5 students.• Students have 6 weeks to prepare for competition.• Participation is required for MBA and PhD.• Prizes are sponsored by Smithtown IAB members• Judges are recruited from Smithtown IAB and

District Administration

• The School of Business curriculum closely aligns with each of DECA’s competitive events, allowing a significant number of students from both high schools to qualify annually for regional, state and national competitions.

• DECA continues to be a positive draw for the School of Business. Both students and parents recognize the benefits and the importance of DECA to becoming “College and Career Ready”.

SHS West: 2010-2011• 190 registered students• 93 students participated in Regional 

competition—54 qualified for the State competition.  

• 12 students participated in National competition– 1 Top 10 competitive event medal received and 1 Otis Spunkmeyer Scholarship awarded from National DECA. 

SHS West: 2011-2012• 180 registered student members of the club—

largest in school. • Recognized for 4th consecutive year as highest 

contributing club to state charity—Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation. 

• 68 students participated in State level—awards received in all competitive events. 

• NY State Officer—Secretary and Historian• NY State Board Member• Outstanding Service Award• 5 New York State DECA Honor Society recipients• DECA Nationals Top 10 placement

SHS East: 2010-2011• 328 registered students• 107 Top 10 competitive events medals won at 

state level. • 5 New York State DECA Honor Society Award  

recipients. • 6 Top 10 competitive event medals won  at 

ICDC in Orlando, Florida

SHS East: 2011-2012• 305 registered student members of the club• 90 Top 10 competitive events medals won at

Business Etiquette Dinner• The Business Etiquette Dinner is one of the more popular activities

in the School of Business. • A professional etiquette consultant walks students through the

proper Business dining etiquette at a hotel or catering hall. – Students are also instructed on the appropriate networking techniques and

are given the opportunity to converse with Business people before, during and after dinner.

• The second portion of the evening is used to honor our MBA and Ph.D inductees. – PhD students run the honor society induction

• Student dinners are sponsored by our IAB business partners. • Many sponsors attend both the dinner and the induction ceremony.

Virtual Enterprises• Authentic based learning and assessments

focused on core Business & Economics concepts.

• Partnership with Virtual Enterprise International allows students at each high school to create a business for the VE class.

• Students apply/interview for positions.• Business is conducted with other virtual

companies across the country.• Students are mentored by Industry

Advisory Board members.

• Students compete at Long Island and NYC Trade show competitions.

• Awarded 3rd place for Business Plan in first year of competition.

• Finalists at trade show for Best Website, Product Catalogue and Trade Booth Design.

• HSW awarded Top 10 honors in “Outstanding Trade Booth Design.”

Industry Advisory Board

• Established in 1977• Used as a model for many boards across Long Island• Over 250 Active Members, 2 Co-Chairs from the Business World, 1 Executive

Director (Business Teacher).• Board meets formally 6 times per year• Members of the board support the teaching of college and career readiness

skills by mentoring students in DECA and Virtual Enterprise competitions, Accounting, Finance and Marketing classes; and financially supporting School of Business activities.

• Strong partnerships formed with the Smithtown and Nesconset Chambers of Commerce

• Internships provided by: – CitiGroup, Wells Fargo Financial, State Farm Insurance, St. Catherine of Siena Hospital

and Eastern Energy Systems; along with many local accounting and law firms.

Internship Program

• This CEIP is aimed at introducing and affording students the opportunity to explore various industries and careers.

• 54 hours of unpaid work experience is required—• Some work experiences were found through the IAB’s Student Internship
