Press Ganey Compliments

Received through the Careline:“Everyone that provided care for me over the past few weeks has been fantastic, but the person that stands out the most is Michelle [Crone] in the mammography department where I went to have a stereotactic breast biopsy. She took the time to explain everything in detail and to answer my questions in a way I really understood. She even showed me the mammogram films and what they were seeing. She was extremely competent and I felt very comfortable having her handle everything. Michelle is wonderful and I really appreciated her!”

Notes to Sandy Gates and Ann Newman, Pulmonary Rehab“Sandy, I can’t believe how fast my therapy sessions went. [I] want to thank you for teaching me so much about myself and showing me how much stronger I can be. I couldn’t ask for a better turnout.”

“Ann, I want to thank you for all you have taught. You’re an awesome teacher, therapist and friend. You make me laugh and that’s a good thing. I’m kind of sad that I’m at the end of my sessions. I won’t forget what you and Sandy did for [us].”

~ Thank you, M. & K.

HANOVER MEDICAL GROUP UROLOGY“Dr. [Michael] Kane, using the information he had at hand, immediately addresses my overriding concern about malignancy. There was none. After the examination he said, ‘I can help you.’ That was very uplifting. He thoroughly explained the course of treatment and the medication he prescribed.”

MAMMOGRAPHY:“The technician Deb [Shanbarger] always made me feel comfortable and she is very professional in the images she takes, making sure everything is correct for the doctor to read. [She] explains processes [during the] procedure and what will happen with results after.”

MATERNITY:“My nurse Ashley [Gierhart] was very good getting things going for discharge. My husband and I were ready for discharge as soon as we could since we had a 3-year-old at home. [Ashley] was on the ball and made things happen!”

RADIOLOGY:“Amber [Shaw] was one of the most qualified and concerned staff that I have dealt with for a mammogram.”

THISTLE HILL REHAB:“Andrea Lippy, the receptionist is very friendly and helpful! Julia Lehman is an excellent therapist. She is knowledgeable and personable and professional! I had never been to any of your outpatient rehab facilities before needing one after being hurt in a car accident. I would definitely recommend the Spring Grove facility to any of my friends and family that may need the services offered there.”

Welcome to Amanda Lawrence, MS, RNC-OB, C-EFM, who is the new Clinical Educator for the Maternity, Pediatrics and IV Therapy departments. Her responsibilities include facilitating

the orientation process for new staff members, educating staff members on new and innovative practices, encouraging and assisting evidence-based practice changes and assisting in the daily workflow of the units as needed.

Amanda received her Master of Science in Nursing and Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees from York College of Pennsylvania, where she is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree. She is certified in Electronic Fetal Monitoring and as an Inpatient Obstetrics Nurse by the National Certification Corporation.

Before starting her new job at Hanover Hospital, she served here as an intern in Maternity, where she initiated her skin-to-skin evidence-based project for her doctoral program. Amanda previously worked as a Practical Nursing Instructor at York County School of Technology, teaching Obstetrics and Gynecology in the

classroom and clinical settings; and at the former Hanover Public LPN Program. Prior to then, she was a Labor and Delivery nurse at Wellspan York Hospital and worked in the Perinatal Unit (Labor and Delivery, Antepartum, Postpartum and Newborn Nursery) at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

“I have always enjoyed going to school,” she notes, “and have always felt the need to pursue a terminal degree in nursing. I enjoy remaining up-to-date with the ever-changing world of nursing, and I want to be able to educate and guide staff members to provide the best evidence-based care possible.” Amanda will graduate with her Doctorate in May 2017.

“My education has already allowed me to bring the practice change of initiating skin-to-skin newborn contact in the operating room after cesarean section delivery. Prior to my [intern] project, newborns were only placed skin-to-skin after vaginal deliveries and in the PACU after cesarean sections. This project was embraced by staff and administration before I was hired as a clinical educator and is just one example of what I will be able to bring to the patients and staff.”

According to Amanda, the most rewarding aspect of her job would be providing the best care for patients and educating staff on evidence-based practice changes. “Hearing from patients that I made a difference in their labor and delivery, and witnessing the best outcome of a healthy mom and healthy baby is all that I could possibly ask for!”

Congratulations to Diane Shannon, VSN, RN, VA-BC, who recently earned Vascular Access board certification by Vascular Access Certification Corporation (VACC). She is the first at Hanover Hospital to attain this level of professional proficiency in the specialty of IV therapy.

The VA-BC certification, according to VACC, formally recognizes specialized knowledge, skills and experience. Certification establishes competency standards in the specialty and protects the patient through a means of measurement of current skills and knowledge through a standardized comprehensive examination.

Diane, who currently works as an IV therapy nurse, has worked at Hanover Hospital

since 1988. Through the years, she has held nursing positions in Critical Care, PACU, Cardiac Diagnostics and Radiology. As an IV therapy nurse, she is responsible for having specific knowledge of the vascular system and intravenous treatment modalities.

Diane notes that providing interaction and collaborating with members of the health care team and participating in the clinical decision-making process are most personally rewarding to her in her work. Her decision to pursue vascular access board certification, says Diane, was made “To validate my knowledge and skills. Our patients will benefit by my practice skills and knowledge base.”

PATIENT EXPERIENCE

4 | www.HanoverHospital.org | FEBRUARY 2017

Congratulations to Erica Greil, Maternity, who was “caught” role modeling the Friendly, United and Devoted and respectful FOCUSED Standards of Performance.

HERE ARE EXCERPTS FROM HER NOMINATION, SUBMITTED BY ASHLEY GIERHART, WHO ALSO WORKS IN MATERNITY:“A patient was admitted to the unit for delivery, and Erica was her attending. The patient labored all day, and then was ready

to deliver right after the change of shift. When faced with a

male provider, the patient became extremely upset due to a history that was not disclosed to the staff. After learning that the other female provider was not able to come to the delivery, Erica

was contacted, and the situation was explained.

Press Ganey Survey ComplimentsE4“I think I spoke with every person who waited on me, from the anesthesiologist to the persons cleaning my room. To every person I asked, ‘How long have you worked here?’ and ‘How do you like working here?’, the answer to the second question was either ‘I like it here,’ or ‘I love it here.’”

HANOVER MEDICAL GROUP CARDIOLOGY“I had to wait on this visit before I saw Dr. [David] Gilbert. I don’t mind because I know emergencies come up (I was one once), and appreciate that it happens. The doctor always takes the time to answer all my questions and doesn’t try to hurry me through, even though he is behind.”

HANOVER MEDICAL GROUP FAMILY MEDICINE – HANOVER“Dr. [Erin] Roberts is very knowledgeable. She explains things very thoroughly.”

“Dr. [Brian] Knop is very personable. He listens to your opinion/concerns and responds with easy to understand terminology. He has a nice mannerism about him.”

HANOVER MEDICAL GROUP ADULT & FAMILY MEDICINE – GRANDVIEW“So very thankful for Brandon [Bishop, PA]. I really miss seeing Dr. [Michael] Peck, but I have total confidence in Brandon.”

HANOVER MEDICAL GROUP FAMILY MEDICINE – LITTLESTOWN “This was the first time I saw Dr. [Charles] Kovalchick. He made me feel comfortable even when in the middle of the procedure he had to change the course of plan discovering more than he expected. He personally called me with the results of the test the next business day.”

HANOVER MEDICAL GROUP FAMILY MEDICINE – SOUTH HANOVER“Dr. [John] Schwartz and his staff are always very kind and courteous and I appreciate the extra mile he goes in remembering me as a patient.”

HANOVER HOSPITAL SURGICENTER“I couldn’t have felt more comfortable and welcome with every aspect of this experience. I was treated much like an honored guest. You have succeeded in providing a perfect balance of efficiency and ‘warm fuzziness’. I look forward to my second cataract surgery with positive anticipation!”

ERICA GREIL IS THE JANUARY FOCUSED AWARD RECIPIENT

Read her complete nomination, view photos of her

award presentation and find out who else was

nominated this month on the Patient Experience page of the hospital

WHAT’S NEW?

On any given day, the Emergency Department (ED) staff can experience a fluctuation in the number of incoming and waiting patients, and even in busy times, is able to manage the ebb and flow of patients and needed resources.

When the numbers of patients increase dramatically (surge) causing overcrowding – inpatients in ED rooms (awaiting inpatient beds)and patients occupying ED hallway beds – that’s when other hospital areas, staff and resources are impacted, and it’s time to initiate the hospital’s Surge Plan.

The new Hanover Hospital Surge Plan is a standardized, color-coded guide and tool used to proactively deploy resources during the various levels of surge. Its

purpose is to re-allocate needed resources to keep nursing staff at the bedside, so they can continue to provide efficient patient care. The work changes at each saturation level, so in response, the staff must work differently. Just as a high patient census in the hospital is an issue, so is a high census in the ED, as a surge in the ED can inevitably impact the flow throughout the hospital.

This is how the Surge Plan works: The lowest status of surge is green, and based on escalating ED conditions and saturation levels, the colors progress to yellow, orange, red and finally, black. According to Tara Slagle, Manager, Emergency Department, the ED can manage within the green or yellow

status. “When the saturation level rises to orange or red, that’s when we reach out for hospital-wide assistance.” She adds that implementing the Surge Plan doesn’t mean that patients won’t have a wait in the ED. “It will allow us to justify the use of specially trained staff and other resources to help us to better serve the community.”

The Surge Plan will soon become a policy and procedure, and will be available to view on DocuShare. Watch for an electronic census board, which will soon be added inside the Employee Entrance. In the meantime, if you have any ideas or questions about the Surge Plan, please call Tara Slagle at ext. 3081 or Colleen Duerr at ext. 3434.

During times of “normal” census we fluctuate between green and yellow throughout the day.

During times of above normal census we fluctuate between orange and red.

In an extremely high census we are in black.

Mike Fitchet, Director, Environmental Services, asks that nursing staff become familiar with the features of each of the specialty beds, so the right bed/support surface can be picked up the first time, saving time and multiple trips back and forth from the storage area.

A handy Special Beds feature sheet is available on the hospital intranet for reference. Please check it out carefully before placing the EVS order.

To go to the Special Beds features, click on Information Center, then click on Patient Bed Types.

8 | www.HanoverHospital.org | FEBRUARY 2017

Lana Wilson, a Patient Advocate Liaison volunteer at Hanover Hospital, has belonged to the Relay for Life – The Feisty Fighters cancer support group for the past five years. Little did she know that she would become a survivor as well as a supporter when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016. She would also become a prolific blogger, sharing her experiences in creative, descriptive pirate-speak.

After talking to friends, patients and hospital employees following her diagnosis, Lana decided to pursue treatment at the Cherry Tree Cancer Center, in the care of Drs. Marc Hirsh and Michael Watson. There she has undergone 11 rounds of chemo and receives Herceptin infusions due to her estrogen positive gene. She is now receiving radiation treatments.

During her chemo, Lana relates that she had so much support, with so many people asking how she was doing. That’s when she decided to start a blog, journaling her experiences in a personal notebook, which eventually led to her sending weekly emails to those interested in her progress. “I called my journal ‘Our Journey Across the C,’ because my husband Mike and I were on a journey to conquer cancer – also known as the big C.” She then found herself injecting colorful pirate jargon, making her posts a little lighter and less negative. “I could complain in a comical manner without seeming too negative. It just evolved into what it is today!”

Much to her surprise, Lana has groupies/followers – family members and friends who, she says, really seem to enjoy the blog posts. “They keep me on my toes and help my ‘chemo brain.’”

“I try to be as positive as I can while I also report what has been happening to us. Sometimes I [become] negative, sometimes positive, sometimes humorous, and I always try to be educational. There are so many little things that the average cancer patient may not know or think that they have suffered alone.”

If you would like to receive Lana’s email blogs as she continues her journey, please contact her at: [email protected].

A JOURNEY ACROSS THE “C”Tales of a Swashbuckling Buccaneer’s Bouts with Chemo

“Our CREW had taken stance on the dock...cannons at the ready... packed with Purple Dragons attached to bags of Chemo Captain Taxol, yelling, “Avast YE SCURVY DOG at the GRAND KRAKEN! All of a sudden KAPOWIE! All cannons were lit and fired...directly at the beast...hitting him in his most vulnerable areas! The beast went down, loosening his grasp on our ship as he sank to the bottom of the sea.”

FOR YOUR INFORMATION

J. Peabody Hospital recently revised and

upgraded its infection control protocols

and instituted an electronic handwashing

monitoring system in the patient care

areas. All providers and staff have been

well educated on the risk of spreading

infection through improper handwashing

and the danger of hospital infections to

their patients’ health.

One month after the systems and

education are complete, the nurse

manager observes practices in the ICU

and finds that compliance has greatly

improved, except for one nurse who

routinely does not practice hand hygiene

between patients. When questioned,

John the nurse, states he does not have

time to clean his hands between every

patient contact and will not [spread

germs] as he is a clean person.

John is making a choice. Does he

understand the risk to himself and his

patients? This answer only can come

through interviewing John and asking the

question. As John said he does not have

time to clean his hands. Is it because he

doesn’t understand the importance or is

he disregarding the policy?

Daily, we all have opportunities to

“coach” a peer. What does this mean?

This means to take the time

and share with

your peer or

co-worker

what “at

risk” behaviors

you may have seen and

help them to understand

what the risk was.

So if you see a staff person going in and

out of several rooms without washing

their hands, take the time to go over,

share with them what you saw and how

it affects the patients — and the hospital.

Take the moment to educate and improve

awareness of the behavioral choice.
