I am humbled and honored to be the Chair of the NBT Board through October 2019. I feel very blessed to be part of a mission-committed board that has great support and guidance from a talented NBT staff. The future of NBT looks very exciting as we strategize for the growth of manufacturing summer camps, scholarships, and more. My personal core mission is to help students develop a clear path to a career that aligns with their passion. I summarize the development steps of a career path with words that start with the letter E: Expose, Engage, Experience, Educate, and Employ. The mission of NBT, supported by individuals, businesses, and education partners, enhances the exposure and engagement opportunities as our future workforce brings focus to their career choices. Watching people’s excitement build as they engage in activities that inspire their tinkering minds is very rewarding. Connecting businesses to education is something that I feel will elevate the efficiency of career path development for the workforce of the future and support the efforts of manufacturing businesses to grow their skilled workforce. My 19+ years of experience at a technical college has solidified one thought, we are all in this together. Continued financial and resource support for efforts such as summer manufacturing camps is a shining example of how it all fits together (with a plan!) to keep our industry strong. THANK YOU to all that have committed resources, time, talent, and more to support industry-sustaining outreach and engagement efforts. I look forward to sending more messages that express gratitude for contributions supporting the mission of NBT. Best regards, Mike Cattelino ‘Tis the season to make your donation count. Giving to NBT not only provides a student the opportunity to discover their passion for making something with their hands — it also gives you peace of mind that your donation is going to a good cause. NBT inspires and encourages today’s students to pursue manufacturing careers which in turn, fills the pipeline of tomorrow’s skilled workers. Your gift of any amount to this campaign will fund the education and training that will help them become the highly- skilled future machinist, future tool and die maker, future welder, future CNC operator, future engineer, future CAD/CAM designer, or future manufacturer they hope to be. Winter 2018

Greetings from the Board of Directors of the Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs® (NBT) Foundation. I am humbled and honored to be the Chair of the NBT Board through October 2019. I feel very blessed to be part of a mission-committed board that has great support and guidance from a talented NBT staff. THANK YOU to all that have committed resources, time, talent, and more to support industry-sustaining outreach and engagement efforts. I look forward to sending more messages that express gratitude for contributions supporting the mission of NBT.

Best regards,

FALL FUNDRAISING EVENTS ARE MAKING STRIDES ON BEHALF OF NBT

SEEING A PROBLEM, BECOMING THE SOLUTION

Skilled labor shortage engages a local communityMichael Shaluly owns Mastercut Tool Corp. He saw the writing on the wall. Workers aging, not enough youthful applicants. That’s not a long-term sustainable model for any company or any industry. In wondering what he could do to turn the tide, he realized that he had to connect with the educational community and other employers in his area to build interest in the careers of the industry. Then he needed to help support young people as they trained for the available jobs.

And so was born the 5K Run or Walk for Education created and sponsored by Mastercut Tool and the Shaluly Foundation, LLC. Now in its fourth year, the race is held in Michael’s home town of Safety Harbor, Fla. each October to help celebrate Manufacturing Day and raise much needed funds for NBT along with three other organizations that support manufacturing education.

Over the years, Michael and his team have inspired other companies to join them in this effort and the race has grown. In 2018 not only did race registrations top 250, but for the first time children ages 3-8 raced in the Kids Dash and joined their parents and grandparents. Community and Education are among the Core Values at

Mastercut, the 5K is part of those important values and employee involvement demonstrates this.

Michael’s belief in the manufacturing industry and the bright future it offers to those who pursue careers in it drives him to inspire others to get involved and to generously support educational programs for young people who want to pursue its challenges. With the sun rising on the morning of the race, as people are getting ready to run, you can see the joy on Michael’s face as he looks around and realizes how much fun everyone is having and how important their participation is to the legacy he is building for his community.

RUN4MFG HEADS IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION FOR FUTURE MANUFACTURERS

Thank you to everyone who came out during FABTECH for the RUN4MFG 5K at Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta on Thursday, Nov. 8. Runners gathered with show attendees and exhibitors to show their support of NBT, the foundation of FMA, and the charitable foundations of the other FABTECH co-sponsors – SME, AWS, PMA, and CCAI. NBT Board Members Roger Wilson and David Pettigrew were among the runners who enjoyed the race and friendly competition. Stride-for-stride this successful (and healthy) event helps ensure a sustainable future for manufacturing.

CHANGE IS GOOD FOR NBT

RoboVent turned loose change into a nice donation to NBT, one of three beneficiaries, at their FABTECH 2018 booth. Donations were collected onsite at the RoboVent booth to support manufacturing education and inspire the future generation of manufacturers. Three collection jars were at the location as customers and spectators were encouraged to “vote” for their favorite cause with their pocket change. NBT received the most change and received a $750 donation. Thank you to RoboVent and everyone who donated to this creative fundraising activity for a great cause.

Three previous NBT scholarship winners earned an NBT Travel Grant to attend FABTECH 2018 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta on Nov. 6-8. The students joined nearly 35,000 attendees and saw over 1,500 exhibiting companies, surrounding themselves with the latest industry products and developments in metal manufacturing. The travel grants included admission to one educational session with their visit and reimbursement of their travel expenses.

“I learned so much in school in the welding field, but I am dying to learn more and meet people of this industry to expand my network … My love for this industry is unexplainable. Hobart Institute of Welding Technology (HIWT) will have a booth at FABTECH, which I think is cool because I can help promote both NBT and HIWT. I would like to thank you for this opportunity, as well as the scholarship to go to school. I couldn’t have finished school (financially) if it wasn’t for NBT. Thank you so much.”

Broc Downer, Hobart Institute of Welding TechnologyEducational Session: Innovation & Business Strategies for Growth

“Exploring new things is exciting! One of my newest pastimes is taking tours of local companies while I’m on school break; I’ve been to eight so far. FABTECH would be the ultimate opportunity to see, touch, and experience many of the latest and greatest aspects of the welding industry. I hope to gather lots of proverbial “tools for my toolbox”. I spent this past summer as a Quality Engineering intern with John Deere in Des Moines, IA. This experience opened my eyes to many facets of fabrication and manufacturing — robots, smart torque guns, labor relations — the whole nine yards. My outlook on FABTECH this year will be significantly more meaningful and insightful than ever.”

Nate Lyon, Pennsylvania College of TechnologyEducational Session: National Center for Welding Education and Training, Weld-Ed

“My family started a small party rental business about ten years ago. In the early years of the business, we were no different than most of our competition until one year that my dad and I attended an Amusement Parks and Attractions trade show in Florida. No amount of research could have delivered so much information on new technology and equipment. I cannot express how much I learned from that show and how much it changed our business. As I finish these last few semesters as a welding student, I can only imagine being able to see the upcoming technology at FABTECH and how beneficial it will be to me when I start working.”
