Miscellaneous & Diary
Hope you’ve had a great summer! Let me bring you up-to-date with
what’s been happening in CAFOD and what lies ahead of us. In
addition to our overseas development work, CAFOD has launched two
appeals for humanitarian crises in Gaza and Iraq (see below). I
would be grateful for your prayer and support for these troubled areas
and may I thank you deeply for your efforts already. Not to forget Syria, where CAFOD’s work goes on supporting refugees in their
hundreds of thousands. People in the Diocese have now contributed
£73,339 to the CAFOD Syria appeal total of £2,667,058.
To address this challenge in solidarity and compassion, it is vital for
CAFOD to have volunteers here. Our volunteer team is contacting our
fantastic Parish Contacts across the Diocese currently to say thanks,
see how things are going and to see how we can all help CAFOD’s work
move forward.
Our commitment is to broaden our parish work and seek out more
volunteers to help people change lives overseas - and our own! (See
page 10).

An example of this was the visit of Parish Priest Abba Solomon and
Tamiru Legesse from Ethiopia to the Diocese in June for the connect2
programme. It was inspiring to meet people from overseas who are
turning our support and prayer into a better long-term future for their
communities. (See page 16). Equally inspiring was the talent and hard
work on show at the Just One World concert in Blackburn in June (see page 5).
So, making a real difference is possible. Once when two men were
walking they saw thousands of starfish washed up along the beach.
One started throwing them back. The other said, “There are
thousands! What difference are you really making?” His friend replied,
“I’ve made a difference to that one, ... and that one too, ...!”
Like many, we are delighted that the canonisation of Oscar Romero is
moving forward, and his words remind me of these starfish:
“We accomplish in our lifetime only a tiny fraction of the magnificent
enterprise that is God's work. We plant the seeds that one day will
grow. We may never see the end results, but that is the difference
between the master builder and the worker. We are prophets of a future not our own.”
A real part of this future will be dealing with the
impact of climate change. Anthony Mbandi, Director
of our partner Caritas Kitui in Kenya, spoke to
students from across our Diocese at the end of June:
“Climate change knows no borders. It will not make
an appointment. It will show up at your door
unannounced.”
From September onwards, CAFOD will be focusing on
taking action on climate change, and limiting its
impact on the world’s poorest communities, with our new campaign,
One Climate, One World. Please play your part too! Details on pg. 8.

STOP PRESS! STOP PRESS! STOP PRESS! STOP PRESS! STOP PRESS!
Davi Yanomani, world famous activist from the Yanomami people is a world renowned Brazilian activist for indigenous peoples’ rights and protection of the
rainforest in the Amazon. He will visit the Diocese on 27 September. Some-
times known as ‘the Dalai Lama of the Rainforest’, following his decades of in-ternational campaigning to secure Yanomami land rights, Davi led the
Yanomami people from the brink of extinction to establishing the Yanomami
Park, created in 1992. He will be at Lee House, Chipping Road, Thornley,
Preston PR3 2TB: 2-5pm to talk of his recent work which CAFOD is supporting.

Vital statistics
As a result of the support that you gave CAFOD last year:
188,793 more women and men have access to potable water
67,119 more women and
men have access to improved sanitation
143,514 more women and
men have access to knowledge and means for improved hygiene
And who was responsible for transforming the lives of so many people this year? You were - CAFOD’s supporters in parishes, schools and families throughout England and Wales. Because it was the money you gave, especially to our Fast Day appeals,
that powered the development grants we made. It’s amazing to realise that, by putting our faith into action, we are collectively able to improve so many more people’s lives.
But the need is still there - for 1 in 8 of the world’s people still go to bed hungry every day. So this Harvest Fast Day - Friday
3rd October - we are asking you, yet again, to make a place at your table and help CAFOD continue doing its vital work.
Involve children in Harvest Fast Day with the “Big Silly Share” - a fun way of getting them to think about the silly way our
world works. Ring the office for details.

As part of the celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of St Augustine’s High School, Billington, a choir of 250 ex-pupils sang together,
for the first time in two decades, at Blackburn’s King George’s Hall in June.
They performed Just One World, a musical written by former St Augustine teachers Peter Rose and Anne Conlon. Peter and Anne have
been writing musicals since 1981, including “Yanomamo” (for the World Wildlife Fund) and “Song of Creation” (for CAFOD).
The audience of over 1000 were deeply appreciative of the concert, and responded
with incredible generosity at the end of the show - donating a massive total of £25,000 to CAFOD’s connect2:Ethiopia initiative, that brings
together parish and school communities here, such as St Augustine’s, with people in the African nation.
Matt Haworth, an ex-pupil of Peter Rose and himself now music teacher at St Augustine’s, said: “Peter is an inspiration, who taught everyone in the choir - it’s as if we’re all related.”
Back to school
GOOD NEWS CORNER. 237 families, who have been living in an abandoned hotel in Brazil and were facing eviction, have won their fight for permanent housing, after thousands of
letters from CAFOD campaigners to the President of Brazil.

Out and about
PHILIPPINES UPDATE. On 8 November last, Typhoon Haiyan - the most
powerful storm ever to make landfall - caused massive devastation in the central and southern Philippines. Since then, CAFOD and its partners
have been working hard to help with emergency relief and long-term rebuilding. Our emergency appeal raised £5.4m, including £234,000 from Salford Diocese. Just one example: the children of St. John’s Cathedral primary school in Salford raised £700, with each class holding a different activity - including cake bake,
sponsored silence, fancy dress, a dance and a chocolate fountain. In our photo, the children are holding some of the items their money will have bought - food, water, blankets and cooking pots. Many thanks to everyone who supported the appeal.
ROMERO’S LEGACY. Ann Wilson spoke to over 60 parishioners at St
Mary & St John Fisher, Denton about her pilgrimage to El Salvador with the Romero Trust. In the picture with Ann (right), some of the
people who listened are holding cooking vessels, a Salvadorian chalice and cross, a poster and a book “Memoirs in a Mosaic”, of sayings and memories of Archbishop Romero. If you would like Ann to visit your parish, call Ged or Mary at the Salford office.

RUNAROUND. Remember how hot it was in June? Well, despite the
heat, 14 intrepid runners (left) braved the Burnley midsummer to run the Pennine Lancashire 10K for CAFOD. Bernadette McCurrie said, “A number
of our group came up from Manchester especially for the event.
We think we’ve raised around the £500 mark which is great! But also great that we raised the CAFOD profile as well.”
The month before, Team CAFOD were out in force at the BUPA Great Manchester Run,
including a team from Aquinas 6th Form College. But our youngest runner was 3-year old Emerald O’Loughlin (right), who ran all the way in the 2km mini-race. Emerald was supporting her dad, Declan, who completed the main event in 57 minutes.
WORKAROUND. The J&P Group from Loreto High School in Manchester recently ran a workshop on Fair
Trade for Year 2 pupils at St Kentigern’s primary, Fallowfield. The children enjoyed a carousel of four activities, including tasting of Fairtrade chocolate and bananas (this was the
favourite one) and acting out the production chain. The Loreto students were great ambassadors for their school, showing a mature
and sensitive approach to the younger children.

Campaign Update
TOGETHER, WE’VE GOT
THE POWER. The biggest obstacle to reducing poverty in today’s world is climate change. So CAFOD is launching a major new campaign this September -
“One Climate, One World”.
Climate change threatens our work to improve people’s lives. Typhoons and floods destroy the livelihoods of entire communities; unpredictable
seasons for farmers leave millions hungry. The IPCC (Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change) has said that is it very likely
that human activity is responsible for causing climate change.
The new campaign asks us to:
Play our own part by making changes in our lives to love our neighbour and care for God’s creation.
Call on political leaders to play their part - by working together to prevent climate change pushing people deeper into poverty, and by supporting the transition from
polluting fossil fuels to sustainable energy for all.
“The changing climate means people need to work
together. It’s important to support each other and be a neighbour”. (Sinteyo Legei, Kenya).

NORTH-WEST CAMPAIGN LAUNCH - SAVE THE DATE.
We are delighted that CAFOD’s regional launch of “One Climate, One World” will be held in Manchester, just ahead of the Labour Party Conference. An excellent opportunity to listen, ask questions and sign the community action.
Where? Friends Meeting House, 6 Mount Street, Manchester M2 6NS
When? Saturday 20th September, 2pm to 5pm. Registration & tea/coffee from 1.30pm. Mass at
St Mary’s, Mulberry Street (nearby) at 5.15pm.
With? Sarah Wykes, CAFOD’s Senior Analyst on climate
change and energy. Catherine McKinnel MP, who has visited CAFOD programmes in Kenya. And Bishop Terence Brain will bless the launch.
You can register (for free) to attend the launch on line at cafod.org.uk/Events/North-West-launch-event or ring Mary Clark at the Salford office.
Not free on 20th September? You can still get involved by organising a campaign signing in your parish or school. You can order prayer cards, action cards, campaign guides and much more on-line at cafod.org.uk/campaignorders or
from Mary at the office.
FOR THE LOVE OF.... As part of the Climate Coalition of over a hundred organisations, CAFOD has launched an on-line action page. We all love something that is affected by climate change. We are invited to add a word
or two to “the heart”, describing what we love, and share the link on social media. Or download the printable action page and post it back. Later in the year, the “things we love” will be
shared with politicians. Go to cafod.org.uk/fortheloveof

Your CAFOD needs you!
Are you - or do you know - someone who has a few hours to spare every now and again? There’s a chance to make a big difference with CAFOD!
We are looking for people, perhaps with a few friends or fellow parishioners, to help us with any of:
as CAFOD Contacts and volunteers in
your parish with our new Climate Change Campaign
by speaking at Mass or give talks to
adults about CAFOD visit schools to share news of our work
to take good photographs
by working with us on our great events
with our work in the office in Salford, &..
... we are open to your suggestions!
We offer a range of support and training to help you carry out whatever role you choose. We have resources to help
adults deepen their understanding of how their faith supports action to tackle
injustice, both overseas and at home, and we are developing more.
Please call in to the office, for further details. Or ring us on 0161-705 0605. We look
forward to hearing from YOU!
Our team of education volunteers
“CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING - AN INTRODUCTION”
We have developed a modular course for use in parishes. It consists of either a single, 2-hour session, or a set of four sessions that could be used weekly, perhaps during Lent or Advent. For details, contact the office. “It’s brilliant!” (P.Doyle)
11
We’ve felt for some time that there was a need to offer groups (CAFOD groups and/or other
individuals or groups in a parish) a short session to reflect on justice and CAFOD’s work.
We think it would be best to devote part of an already arranged meeting to do this over 30-60 minutes, and it could be led by one of your group or by a member of the CAFOD
Salford Spirituality Team. We’ve had discussions with volunteers from the former Jesuit Spirituality Centre at Loyola Hall who would like to support this too. We know how valuable time to reflect can be for groups, both in their work for CAFOD and in their personal faith development, and it can also help to attract new members.
The sessions will focus on CAFOD's vision and values: compassion; solidarity; partnership; sustainability;
stewardship; hope; and dignity. If you or your group would be interested in this, please call the office.
Pause for reflection
Two of our supporters are running in the
Yorkshire Marathon on Sunday 12th October. Alison Allerton and Mark Bishop are hoping to raise at least £500 for CAFOD. If you would like to help them reach their target, you can donate on-line. Just log on to
http://www.justgiving.com and search for “Alison Allerton”.

Solidarity in Gaza
In early August, CAFOD launched an emergency appeal to
help in the Gaza situation. We currently support Caritas Jerusalem, Catholic Relief Services and Islamic
Relief in Gaza in the struggle to provide
safe drinking water for 99,000 people and help them save scarce money through Savings Clubs for a better future.
In a moving act of solidarity, women from a CAFOD-supported savings group in Gaza have generously donated all of their savings to those more in need than themselves. The savings and loans groups were initially set up in March 2014 to help
people save small amounts of money each week, and build social and economic capital over time.
When the violence broke out in Gaza last month, some of the groups buried their collective savings to keep them safe. When the violence subsided, the groups were able to return and dig up their savings - finding them intact, albeit a little soggy. One of the groups made the moving decision to give the money to others in even greater need than themselves –
people who had lost their homes, were living in UN schools with limited water, sanitation systems and power. One of the CRS project staff in Gaza reports:
“This show of solidarity and the strong social fabric in Gaza, and the role that the methodology of the savings groups in our project has played in enabling this generous gesture, is heartening.”
13
Can you help?
We are asking people to petition the Foreign Secretary to push international partners to negotiate a lasting peace and settlement for all concerned in Gaza – see www.cafod.org.uk/Campaign/Take-action-today/Gaza-campaign. Please pray for
people on both sides of this terrible conflict (there are links to prayers on the same page). If you can, please also donate there what you can to our humanitarian appeal to help Gazans through some terrible times.
Iraq
CAFOD felt compelled to respond to
relieve the plight of those suffering in northern Iraq, including thousands of Christians and other marginalised groups, in the face of the advance of the Islamic State
forces. At least 350,000 people are thought to have been forced from their homes by the recent fighting. The conflict in neighbouring Syria has also led to an influx of more than 220,000 refugees. As the crisis continues, huge numbers of people are in urgent need of food, water, shelter and basic emergency supplies.
Who are CAFOD’s partners and what are they doing?
We are currently scaling up our work to support our local
church partners in meeting the needs of thousands of people who have been forced from their homes. Because of the security situation, we are unable to name our partners or describe in detail where they are operating; publicising their
work could endanger both them and the life-saving programmes they are delivering.
You can support our response by donating to our General Emergency Fund here: http://www.cafod.org.uk/Give/Donate-
to-Emergencies. In the unlikely event that we raise more money than we can spend in Iraq, your donation could be used to respond to other emergencies around the world.

connection
In June, over 60 CAFOD supporters welcomed Abba Solomon, the parish priest from the village of Sebeya in northern Ethiopia, and CAFOD’s Communications Officer in Ethiopia,
Tamiru Legesse, to St Thomas of Canterbury parish in Bolton. CAFOD supports the people of Sebeya through connect2, which brings together schools and parishes
in England and Wales with communities in developing countries so that they can learn about each other’s lives, forge stronger
ties and live in solidarity with one another.
The parish has committed to a one-year project to raise £30,000 to help improve people’s access to clean water in a very arid place in Ethiopia. Already over £20,000 has been raised by a variety of ‘mini projects’ and sponsored events undertaken by parishioners.
Commenting on their visit, Rev Bill Byrne, Parish Priest of St Thomas’ (pictured above with Tamiru left & Abba Solomon
right) said: “We were truly delighted that Abba Solomon and Tamiru came to see us. We have come to know a little of their lives and the struggles they face with such courage and determination.”
They also visited St Thomas of Canterbury Primary School where Headteacher Mrs Frances Lysij showed them how schools work here. It’s hoped that mutual understanding of
each other’s lives will help create a lasting link. The Bolton
17
children went on to make a CD of songs, sales of which will go to connect2.
Abba Solomon said: “I’d like to thank everyone for their
hospitality and kindness and for their continued support for my community in Sebeya. Sebeya is beautiful and peaceful but extremely dry. People’s practical support here has meant that our children now have clean water to drink at school. We’ve been able to
improve water storage and irrigation so families have more confidence that their crops will grow and they can feed themselves when the rains fail and also sell their extra produce. Knowing that people here understand the challenges and want to help us overcome them is immeasurable.”

Invite a CAFOD visitor to your school this Harvest!
What better way to work for a fairer future than by inspiring a new generation of CAFOD supporters and campaigners? Our
Education Volunteers can lead assemblies or workshops in your school exploring CAFOD’s work around the world.
Students can get involved in the mission to end global hunger through teaching others, writing to an MP, or organising a fundraising event. One such idea is ‘Come Dine with CAFOD’, where the challenge is to prepare a meal with ingredients
costing just £1.
If you’d like to get your school involved in something great this Autumn, book a CAFOD visit now!
To book a visit or for more information, please ring Ged or Mary at the office: 0161 705 0605 or email to [email protected]

St Cecilia’s Day normally falls in November - but this year it came on July 8th. For that was the day that the CAFOD Link Group at St Cecilia’s High
School in Longridge received their second award for all their hard work in promoting CAFOD’s vital work overseas.
Ged Edwards, CAFOD Salford’s Manager, presented the award, with special mention for the Year 7 members.
Mrs Beatham, who founded the group many years ago, was present at the award, and expressed her pleasure at seeing
their efforts being recognised.
