2016/2017 NO. 4 A Publication of the Scottish Terrier Club of California November 2016 INTRODUCING A GROUND-BREAKING NEW TEST FOR CANINE BLADDER CANCER Dr. Marcia Dawson, DVM (Scottish Terrier Breeder) We live in amazing times. It seems like just yesterday that we awoke to the rising threat of bladder cancer [also known as transitional cell carcinoma (TCC)/urothelial carcinoma (UC)] in our dogs, with new cases being diagnosed far too frequently. As some breeders are aware, there are breeds that have a higher than average risk of developing TCC/UC: American Eskimo Dog, Australian Cattle Dog, Aus- tralian Shepherd, Beagle, Bichon Frise, Border Collie, Parson Russell Terrier, Lhasa Apso, Rat Terri- P resident’s Message We received sad news our dear long time club member Pamela Pesek passed away. Our sincere condolences to her husband Dennis and their family. We will truly miss her. Fall is finally coming with that we celebrate Halloween. Be sure to join us for our Fall Match October 30 th which is always a favorite for everyone. We will have lure coursing again which we all enjoyed. This coming year May 27, 2017 will be our Clubs 90 th year quite a milestone. We are having a fund raiser reprinting our 25 th Anniversary book first printed in 1952. The books contain a tremendous amount of history for our Club. Check this Bulletin for instructions on how to order. It is a great keepsake for all of us. Plans are brewing for our next Specialty. We will celebrate our 90 th Anniversary and AROO for Hollywood. We have fun things planned for our Clubs milestone. We are starting to select committees; anyone wishing to help or mentor on one of our committees contact me, Linda Sanchez or Bill McGinnis. Our Ways and Means committee is busy working on a cook book. Send your recipes to Cheryl Schaeffer, [email protected]. See you all soon Jeanie Jennings er, Russell Terrier, Scottish Ter- rier, Shetland Sheepdog, West Highland White Terrier, Wire Fox Terrier. These breeds com- bined account for more than a third of all diagnosed TCC/UC cases in purebred dogs. Over the past 15-to-20 years, many dedicated researchers have followed a variety of paths lead- ing to better understanding of TCC/UC, better diagnostic proto- cols, and new therapeutic op- tions. With the sequencing of the canine genome, biomedical re- search has rocketed forward. And here we are today in 2016, excit- ed to announce a new urine- based test that will profoundly change the approach to early di- agnosis of TCC/UC in dogs. In his laboratory at N.C. State University College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Matthew Breen, PhD, CBiol, FRSB, professor of genomics and the Oscar J. Fletcher Distinguished Professor of Comparative Oncology Genet- ics, has been a busy man. Adding to a long list of successful re- search projects and published works, Breen has developed a new free-catch urine test that truly welcomes us into a new age. But first, a bit of background: In the complex and miraculous ma- chinery of all cells, there are many processes at work. And deep in this machinery is an im- portant cog, a protein called BRAF . Part of a whole family of proteins called RAF , the BRAF protein is an essential component that regulates the ac- tivity of normal, healthy cells. But when there is a mutation in this BRAF protein, the cell ma- (Cancer Test Continued on page 3) GWTA 2017 SPECIALTY CHANGES Oct 27, 2016 The Great Western Terrier Association (GWTA) announced big changes for the 2017 specialties. Talk about a crazy, topsy-turvy month for Scottie Rescue!!!

I've just experienced it, starting with the sixteen-week-old little guy from a San Diego County shelter that I told you about last month. He and his two sister littermates were turned into the shelter in late August by a man who, when asked, told the shelter that "they just showed up in my yard." Yeah, sure!!! As I've said many times before, people turning their own dogs into a shelter will claim to have "found" them, thus avoiding having to pay a turn-in fee which can range from a fairly nominal amount to as high as $100 per dog.

We learned about this young puppy trio almost immediately, and were in contact with the shelter. Sev and Julia MacPete, their veterinary daughter, Ruthanne MacPete, and STCC member Sueannette Maniscalco, were called upon immediately and provided needed opinions on whether these pups were in fact purebred Scotties ... if we were going to bail them out. The original shelter photos were very dark. Much better photos were provided by Ruthanne MacPete almost immediately as she was working in the shelter that day.

Purebred Scottie puppies turned into a shelter was a first in my 31 years of Scottie Rescue ... and even Sueannette, with her lifetime of Scottie experience, asked me "Who would do something like that?"

As we all realize... animal shelters almost always have kennel cough occurring, and also the much more serious Parvo and Distemper diseases. Puppies are so very vulnerable with their immature immune systems and lack of being fully vaccinated.

The man had turned them into the wrong shelter, based on his home address, so they spent six days waiting to be picked up by the very crowded city shelter they belonged in. They were considered "strays," i.e., "lost" puppies and had to spend ten more days in the second shelter ... almost three weeks exposed to whatever might be there.

The two girls were adopted to the public and we got the little boy, thanks to the help of the MacPetes.

Now for the topsy-turvy part of last month.

All three puppies were neutered and spayed at the shelter and adopted late the

breakfast farmhouse on the central coast on their return trip.

I want to share this short note from Siggy's new Mom.

"Hi Carol, Thanks so much for the adoption day pictures and for everything. It was great seeing you. It was also so nice of you to drive up to meet us. That helped greatly. "Siggy is doing well. He had a great evening meeting horses and other animals who were coming out of the barn for dinner ... and hanging out with Reggie. Reggie is little jealous but overall they are doing very well. We are making Reggie feel very special. He is getting treats and lots of love. We will be home tomorrow and will update you. Thanks for choosing us. We will try to be the best parents to little Siggy possible. Hugs, Rosanna"

Continuing on with the topsy-turvy past month, while I was dealing with the two puppies, two more Scotties queued up in need of Rescue. They were both from different situations and both are wheaten males.

I will tell you all about them and the female puppy next month. Fergus is a senior and Reno, amazingly weighs 51 pounds and is NOT overweight, but very, very long. He has the deepest bark I've ever heard from a Scottie.

SPECIAL THANK YOU'S TO: Alex and Dr. Heather Chang; Sev and Julia MacPete; Dr. Ruthanne MacPete; and Sueannette

Maniscalco. Your generosity and help is deeply

appreciated and enables us to continue taking the best possible care of our Scotties.

same afternoon, which is the practice of the majority of Southern California shelters ... same day surgery/adoption.

On adoption day evening a woman phoned me, asking, "Do you know there is a male purebred Scottie puppy at the shelter?" I replied, "Yes, we have him." This surprised her. She told me she had adopted one of the two girls and had met a man at the shelter who adopted the other girl.

She seemed to gain confidence in me during this conversation and revealed that she had just had recent eye surgery and was not supposed to lift things for quite awhile. "Puppies need lifting. I live in a two-story condo complex with no yard and this really isn't an ideal time for me to have

adopted a puppy," she sighed. "Do you think you can find her an outstanding home if this becomes too difficult for me?" Of course I told her I would be happy to help if need be. Need be it was! Exactly seven days later I picked up the little girl now named Mattie.

So both puppies were here together for about five days.

Siggy is the little male's new name and he now lives in Brisbane, San Mateo County in the San Francisco Bay area, with his ten-year-old Scottie brother, Reggie, and small mixed breed terrier sister, Frannie.

Siggy's new Mom and Dad lived in the San Fernando Valley when they adopted Reggie nine years ago. They moved to the Bay area six years ago for law school for Dad. Mom is an animator for the Simpsons and Disney, along with her fine arts work and extreme dedication to all animals, and especially Scotties. (I rarely adopt to a home more than several hundred miles away.)

They drove down to the Magic Mountain area to pickup Siggy, saying they wanted me to see how great Reggie was doing as a senior. They made it a two day trip and spent time at a bed and
