RepresentationUnit 1: Outcome 1

A representation is a constructed media text. Representations can take many forms, including radio segments, newspaper articles, photographs, films, television programs, TV news.

While some media texts- like television news and documentary films- may seem realistic, we have to remember that it is not the same as experiencing things ourselves.

It is important to realise that representations can be manipulated, depending on who is creating them. Representation

Editing Reality TV

We are making a film about life at Shepparton High School. How would I be protrayed? How would I be represented?

In the next two minutes, address the following question: If you were a character in a film or TV show, how would you be depicted/shown?

How are you represented?

Think about how you might be different in a range of settings, for example, school, work, with your friends.

Representation: How a media text is constructed. How something is presented in a text.

Construction: The action of building or creating something. In order to be successful, a construction should follow a plan.

Code: A system of signs used to create meaning.

Convention: Well- established ways of constructing texts. Glossary Terms for Outcome 1

Make a list of the different films and TV youve seen that represent teenagers.

Now make a list of the stereotypes that are often represented in these texts.
