Monitoring, evaluation and impactAn introduction
Monitoring and evaluationWhat is monitoring?Monitoring means regularly measuring what's going on with your service or scheme.
What is evaluation?Evaluation means making conclusions from the monitoring data on how well the service or schemes are performing.
…they are very different activities!
The cycle of monitoring and evaluation (M&E)
Why is monitoring and evaluation so important?
We use monitoring and evaluation for two key purposes:
• to learn about our own activities and results, and to support internal planning and development
• to be accountable to our stakeholders (e.g. donors, service users)
Organisations need to show their efficiency and effectiveness to funders, commissioners and investors. They also need to communicate achievements to a wider public.
However, monitoring and evaluation is also very importance for providing learning and improving the organisation!
