Intro to Mac OSGSLIS Instructional Technology and
Design
First things first (you’ve probably already gotten this far)
• Select Mac from the GSLIS OS picker• Login using your GSLIS
username/password• Quota manager will alert you of your
available disk space. Click “Thanks”• Your quota is the space allotted to
you on the GSLIS file server
Many names, the same thing
• Mac OS > OS X > 10.6 = Snow Leopard 10.7 = Lion
10.8 = Mountain Lion
10.5 = Leopard
What about Mountain Lion?• 10.8—the newest iteration of OS X• Does not yet cooperate with the
GSLIS lab login system• Introduces a few new features• If you’ve recently purchased a new
Mac, you probably have this on your machine
Why use Mac?• The majority of GSLIS domain
machines dual boot giving you the option to choose Windows XP or Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
• While most of the machines in GSLIS have been upgraded to use Windows 7, bugs are being ironed out, so Mac OS is the more stable of the two operating systems
Meet your desktop
The dock
Functions similarly to the start menu in Windows. Keep frequently used programs here for quick access. Simply drag and drop programs to your dock to add, drag them off the dock to remove.
Using spotlight to tweak your dock• Your default browser in OS X is Safari• You can quickly switch to Firefox by
launching Firefox from spotlight, right-clicking on the application icon in your dock, and opting to keep it in your dock
• Get rid of Safari by dragging it off your dock
Minimized applications
When you minimize a window in OS X, it shrinks into the dock. Bring it back to your desktop by clicking it again.
