Britain changed from being a mainly agricultural economy to a mainly

industrial one.•Factory production and new

technology led to an enormous increase in the production of coal, iron steel, cotton and other manufactured goods, sold across the world.

•There were spectacular improvements in transport, with 23,000 miles of railway built by 1900

People’s lives changed dramatically

•Millions moved from rural areas to work in the new industries in towns and cities.

•New huge cities grew up.

•Population increased from 11 million in 1750 to 42 million by 1900

• Prison sentences became the most common form of punishment for serious

crime • Prison were totally reformed from

chaotic squalid death traps to efficient and tightly controlled institutions
