ANCIENT TERRITORY

When you spot your first saltwater crocodile in the Kimberley your first reaction will be total awe: your second will be that you couldn’t think of a more appropriate place to see one of these living dinosaurs. It’s an ancient land. The Aboriginal record here goes back tens of thousands of years. The iconic boab tree doesn’t look real. There are lizards that look like dragons. It’s a special place. Pictures will help you remember what you see here. But the true, lasting measure of the Kimberley is how it will stay with you long after you leave.

Onboard LifestyleSilver Discoverer is the perfect platform for viewing untamed landscapes. Notable Silversea distinctions such as elegant, all-suite accommodations with butler service, complimentary spirits and fine wines, and truly world-class cuisine are luxuries rarely seen in expedition cruising.

The onboard ambience is warm and friendly, and with just 120 guests, there’s considerable opportunity to meet and mingle with your expedition team and fellow travellers. After all, one of the greatest joys of an expedition voyage is the company you meet and keep.

Exhilarating Experiences AshoreTrek through landscapes filled with oddly shaped geologic formations. Take a Zodiac® right into the mist of a thundering waterfall. Spot a sand goanna lounging in the shade of a massive boulder.

This is the Kimberley. That means getting out amongst the flora and fauna that make this place so unique. And at the end of each day you’ll know that you saw and experienced things that few people have.

Silversea Expeditions TeamTo truly experience your destination be it in the wild, in a city, or along the fringes of civilisation we’ve assembled a team of experts from all relevant fields. You’ll have the opportunity to learn from eminent naturalists, geologists, biologists, historians, and ornithologists, all of whom have the education, research experience and personal accomplishments to make them ideal companions for your adventure.

You can attend daily briefings and lectures presented by professionals hand-picked for their expertise in specific areas depending upon your destination. Join our naturalist as you seek out the elusive rock-wallaby. Receive a briefing from our geologist before you hike through some of the most unusual landscapes you’ll ever see. Or, learn more from an anthropologist about the Indigenous Australians who have lived in this land for thousands of years.

The Royal Geographical Society: An Exclusive Partnership Thanks to this distinguished alliance, Silversea Expeditions guests can enjoy detailed scientific and historical information collated by The Royal Geographical Society from centuries of scientific exploration. Founded nearly 200 years ago, the society, whose patron is The Queen of England, has supported some of the world’s most acclaimed explorers and scientists, celebrated names like Darwin, Livingstone, Hillary, Shackleton, Wallace and Scott.

Its archives contain over two million items from maps and photographs to artefacts and books, a vast treasure trove to historians and scientists alike. And now to the guests of Silversea Expeditions.

Even in a country as big as Australia, the Kimberley always makes and leaves a big impression. Its Dreamtime legends, imposing rock formations and deep gorges give the region an otherworldly quality. Plunging waterfalls offer a cooling break from the heat. It’s an ideal place for those seeking adventure of a truly epic spirit and something else: time to reflect on the region’s ancient human history and consider the wonders of nature in their purest, most raw forms.

THE KIMBERLEY

In the northwest corner of the world’s smallest continent is a land of overwhelming vastness and stunning natural splendour. The ruggedness of its sun-scorched gorges and numerous cascading waterfalls perfectly capture the dual nature of this remote treasure, while its rich Aboriginal presence dates back 40,000 years. Equal parts lush and raw, it is a place of both unforgiving terrain and unforgettable beauty.

EXPEDITION HIGHLIGHTS

• Witness the spectacular tidal change at Montgomery Reef• Discover the Kimberley’s ancient and mysterious rock art• Look for the White-bellied Sea Eagle, Osprey, Brahminy

Kite and Peregrine Falcon• View King George’s towering twin falls plunging over

260 feet (80 metres)• Experience the sheer vastness and power of Mitchell Falls

on an optional helicopter flight• Admire the glorious beehive panoramas of the Bungle

Bungle Range on an included flight-seeing experience• Enjoy numerous nature walks and Zodiac tours, which

reveal stunning scenery, pristine beaches, and awe-inspiring landscapes throughout your Kimberley Expedition

Upon first inspection it’s as if the primal forces that created the Kimberley couldn’t quite make up their mind. On the one hand it’s blessed with pristine beaches, gently washed with gin-clear water, and topography practically prehistoric in character. And yet, these two worlds blissfully co-exist creating a travel experience that appeals to both the explorer and the hedonist in all of us.

Life flourishes here in sizes, shapes and species that have adapted to the unique qualities of the Kimberley, in an area larger than 75% of the world’s countries. Massive in both scale and impression, the Kimberley is truly a world unto itself.

A TASTE OF YOUR ITINERARY

WYNDHAM, AUSTRALIATake part in an inclusive overflight for an aerial view of the breathtaking Bungle Bungle Mountain Range, as well as seeing the majestic man-made Lake Argyle and Argyle Diamond Mine area from the air.

KIMBERLEY COAST, AUSTRALIAA flexible itinerary allows us to take advantage of the different natural phenomena. Here are some of the places we may visit during our time in this wondrous region:

Nares Point and Crocodile CreekWith its convoluted rock formations, Nares Point is a superb location for Zodiac exploration and beach walks with our naturalists. In nearby Crocodile Creek take a refreshing swim in the cool natural pool.

Talbot Bay (Horizontal Falls)The region’s tides of close to 36 feet (11 metres) create an amazing spectacle. Depending on whether the tides are ebbing or flowing, we board our Zodiacs for an exhilarating ride to the “Horizontal Falls”.

Montgomery ReefObserve the amazing tidal changes that take place here, revealing a semi-submerged world teeming with reef birds and sea creatures.

Raft PointTake a Zodiac ashore and set out towards the top of Raft Point to enjoy spectacular views. Take a seat, or lie back and listen to the Dreamtime stories associated with this extremely important Aboriginal site.

Jar IslandAfter a landing on Jar Island we go for a walk to an outdoor gallery of Bradshaw Art, one of the Kimberley’s three distinctive styles of rock art. There we will admire these very delicate and intricate paintings.

King George River & FallsThe twin cascades of King George Falls are among Australia’s highest. We drop anchor at the mouth of the river and ride up this waterway, looking for saltwater crocodiles and amazing birdlife such as the Brahminy kite.

Dr. Alexander WatsonEcologist

Dr. Alexander Watson is an ecologist who holds a special interest in birds and mammals. He currently works for the non-government organisation, “World Wide Fund for Nature,” where he runs field surveys with traditional owners in the North Kimberley. During the summer months, he works as a guide in Antarctica and Southeast Asia. A passionate scientist, Alexander wishes to use his ecology background to ensure natural biodiversity is conserved.

Malcolm Turner Ornithologist

For 36 years, Malcom worked as a biologist and communicator for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, as well as other marine and national parks in southern Australia. In 2003, Malcolm began guest lecturing on expedition ships around Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific and Asia. A knowledgeable ornithologist, he thoroughly enjoys sharing his infectious excitement for experiencing the array of birds and other wildlife encountered while on expedition cruises.

Thomas HammerichGeologist

It was Thomas Hammerich’s love for geology and paleontology, and a specialty in Marine Geology, Subduction Zones and Volcanology, that led him to the sea. The Neumuenster, Germany native has participated in travel exhibitions and international science & arts expos. Thomas is also a lecturer at the annual international Fleugel-Course at the University of Erlangen, Nürnberg and, in addition, reviews articles for international science magazines.

Each Silversea Expeditions voyage is led by a team of 11 experts*: naturalists, anthropologists, geologists and historians, hand-picked for their knowledge, passion and friendliness.

Your Expedition Leader and Captain will work together to ensure opportunities for adventure and exploration are the best possible, taking into account prevailing weather activity.

*The Expedition Team members scheduled for these voyages can be subject to change or cancellation.

THE KIMBERLEY

From the earliest exploration of the Kimberley region by William Dampier, described by the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge as “a man of exquisite mind”, whose book ‘A New Voyage Around the World’ (published in 1699) is rightly seen perhaps as the first true travel book, to the joint Royal Geographical Society and Linnean Society scientific expedition to the region, the “Kimberley Research Project in 1988”. That year marked the bicentenary of both the Linnean Society of London, the oldest biological society in the world, and the establishment of the first European settlement in Australia. To celebrate these two anniversaries, a joint British-Australian scientific project was organised to the Napier, Oscar and King Leopold Ranges in the heart of the Kimberley, led by the two societies.

Wines of the WestMargaret River has forged a reputation for making wines of balance and subtlety. Whether it’s due mainly to the climate and soils here, or whether it is down to the region’s isolation is a topic of some debate. But the full-throttle, super-ripe styles that can still be found in the Barossa and Coonawarra rarely occur here. As in much else, when it comes to winemaking, Margaret River and Western Australia march to a slightly different beat.

Where the wild things areIt should come as no surprise that a region as geographically diverse and unique as the Kimberley would boast an equally unique array of wildlife. Ospreys and peregrine falcons soar high above scanning the sea for their next meal. Bottlenose dolphins playfully accompany you as your Zodiac heads for your next landfall. A Rock-wallaby shelters from the sun under the low branches of a boab tree.
