PREPARING THE APPLIQUÉS

Refer to “Fusible Appliqué" on page 11 of Small Wonders as needed.

1. Using the appliqué patterns on pages 8 and 9, trace each shape (except for the center circle) the number of times indicated onto the paper side of the fusible web. Roughly cut out the fusible-web shapes.

2. Place each shape, fusible side down, on the wrong side of the appropriate appliqué fabric. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to fuse the shapes to the fabric. Let the fused shapes cool, and then carefully cut them out on the drawn lines. Wait to peel off the paper backing until you’re ready to use the fabric shape.

PREPARING THE CENTER CIRCLES

1. Using the circle pattern on page 9, trace the circle four times onto the wrong side of one green print. Cut out the circles, adding a ⅜" seam allowance all around each shape.

2. Appliqué a mushroom, acorn, or leaf in the center of each circle.

3. Trace the same circle onto the nonadhesive side of the fusible fl eece. Carefully cut out each circle on the traced line.

4. Center a fl eece circle on the wrong side of each appliquéd circle. Fuse in place.

5. Add embroidery details on the appliquéd shapes using two strands of cotton fl oss.

• Stem stitch: stems of leaves in Brown and grass around the mushroom in Olive Green

• Running stitch: veins on leaves in Brown and ray of light on the acorn in Aged White

• Colonial knot: dot of light on the acorn in Aged White

6. Sew a running stitch around each appliquéd shape, about ⅛" from the edge of the shape.

7. Fold the seam allowance under and baste in place, making sure to maintain the original dimensions.

MAKING THE WOOL APPLIQUÉD BLOCKS

1. Fuse an 8½" square of stabilizer to the wrong side of each beige 8½" square.

2. Fuse the shapes onto each square in the following order: branches, fl owers, small leaves, appliquéd circles, and big leaves. Appliqué the shapes in place.

3. Stitch the embroidery details on each shape using two strands of cotton fl oss unless otherwise noted.

• Backstitch: pistils in Black Medium and veins of leaves in Icy Leaves

• Running stitch: appliquéd circles in one strand of Rich Wine

• Cross-stitch: details on fl ower edges and ends of pistils in Black Medium

PREPARING THE CLAMSHELLS

Refer to “English Paper Piecing" on book page 12 as needed.

1. Trace the clamshell pattern on page 9 onto cardstock. Cut out the template exactly on thetraced lines.

2. Place the template on the nonadhesive side of the water-soluble appliqué paper and trace 16 clamshell shapes. Carefully cut out each shape on the traced line.

3. For the hills, fuse 15 water-soluble clamshells to the wrong side of the green prints, leaving about 1" between the shapes. Cut out each clamshell, adding a ⅜" seam allowance all around the shape.

4. For the sun, fuse one water-soluble clamshell to the wrong side of the gold square. Cut out the clamshell, adding a ⅜" seam allowance all around the shape.

ASSEMBLING THE CLAMSHELL BLOCK

Refer to the clamshell assembly and embroidery guide on page 8.

1. Fold over the seam allowance along the top curve only and glue it in place.

2. Lay out the green and gold clamshells in six rows as shown in the assembly guide. Place two clamshells right sides together. Sew a couple of stitches at the base of the top curve to hold the clamshells together. Continue in the same way to join the clamshells in each row.

3. Fuse the two lower houses and then the little hills in place. Appliqué the shapes.

4. Fuse a 10" square of stabilizer to the wrong side of the blue gingham square. Once the block is complete, it will be trimmed to the correct size.

5. Place the fused square on point and trace the top hill line composed of fi ve hills, the sun, and the shape of the house standing against the sky.

6. Fuse the house in place. Then appliqué the sun and house.

7. Add the fi rst row of hills and appliqué them in place. Continue in the same way, adding each row of hills.

ADDING THE EMBROIDERED DETAILS

1. All embroidery is stitched using two strands of cotton fl oss unless otherwise noted.

• Satin stitch: doors in Toff ee and chimneys in Old Cottage Grey

• Stem stitch: roofs in Shaded Brick

• Backstitch: tree trunks in Rust and Brown, trees in Copper Leaf and Icy Leaves, fences in Toff ee, mountain goat legs in Aged White, mountain goat horns in Tea-Dyed Stone, and birds in one strand of Black Medium

• Running stitch: sun rays in Rusty Gold, pathways in Tea-Dyed Stone, chimney smoke in one strand of Cottage Smoke

• Cross-stitch: windows in Old Cottage Grey

• Colonial knot: mountain goat bodies in Ivory wool, mountain goat heads in Aged White, and wood chips under the porch in Bronze

2. Trim and square up the block to measure 8½" square.

MAKING THE SASHING UNITS

Press the seam allowances as indicated by the arrows.

1. Join two beige strips and one dark strip along their long edges to make a sashing unit. Make 16 units that measure 3½" × 8½", including the seam allowances.

Make 16 units, 3½" × 8½".

2. Join fi ve dark and four beige 1½" squares to make a nine-patch unit. Make four units that measure 3½" square, including the seam allowances.

Make 4 units,3½" × 3½".

ASSEMBLING THE WALL HANGING

1. Lay out the blocks, sashing units, nine-patch units, beige small triangles, side triangles, and corner triangles in diagonal rows as shown in the wall-hanging assembly diagram. Sew the pieces in each diagonal row together.

2. Join the rows, adding the corner triangles last. Trim and square up the wall-hanging top, making sure to leave ¼" beyond the points of all sashing units for seam allowance. The wall hanging should measure 31⅝" square.

Wall-hanging assembly

FINISHING THE WALL HANGING

1. Cut the backing fabric 4" larger than the wall-hanging top. Layer the top with batting and backing. Baste or pin the layers together.

2. Machine or hand quilt. I quilted in the ditch along hill lines and around all the blocks. A decorative running stitch was used very close to the top hill line and around the wool appliqués and center circles. A quilted curved line connects fl ower to fl ower (mark these lines using a small dish as a guide). Straight lines were quilted for the sun rays, through the center of each inner sashing strip, across each background square in the nine-patch units, and in the side and corner triangles. A free-motion spiral was added in the outer sashing strips.

3. Square up the quilt sandwich.

4. Use the green 2½"-wide strips to make and attach the binding.

5. Sew one vintage button in the center of each nine-patch unit.
