The Perfect DayAugsburg for the day-tripperAre you visiting Augsburg for one day only? Then best start it o with a stroll along the stately boulevard Maximilianstraße (p. 19). First, however, you might want to get a literal overview of the city from atop Perlach Tower. On foehn days, indicated by a yellow ag, the spire even provides a stunning view of the Alps. Perlach Tower and Town Hall (p. 54) form Augsburg’s signature landmark. Not far behind, however, are the three stately fountains on the boulevard (p. 68). These marvellous works of engineer-ing, a multitude of canals, and the waterworks at the town gate Rotes Tor make Augsburg a true “city of water”. The rampart park at the Rotes Tor lies in the immediate vicinity of one of the city’s foremost draws: the enchanting puppet theatre “Augsburger Puppenkiste” and its in-house museum (p. 80). Kids will love the

Admission to all municipal museums is € 1 on every first
Sunday of the month. Highly recommendable: the tim
(p. 77) and the Maximilian Museum (p. 78)!
Lummerland Playground at the park, while grown-ups can un-wind in the tranquil Herb Garden close-by (p. 88/89).
A short walk through the medieval “old town” leads to the Fuggerei (p. 50), the world’s oldest social housing estate and Augs-burg’s most popular tourist attraction. Passionate shoppers may well enjoy the rest of their day browsing the quaint little shops of the old town or the extensive mall City-Galerie (p. 144). The ideal place for peace and quiet, on the other hand, is the boat rental Kahnfahrt (p. 97) at the town moat, with a beer garden directly on the banks. Or why not chill out in style, in one of Augsburg’s lovely inner courtyards? The Damenhof in the Fugger Houses (p. 52) and the rococo garden of the Schaezlerpalais (p. 74) are of particular charm.
