Principals can search for registered subs in their area.

Vetting

• You cannot work in a school without Garda vetting

• In the calendar year that you are due to graduate you can apply to be vetted on the Teaching Council’s website (e-vetting)

• Will speed up your registration process when you qualify

• Garda vetting for teaching practice placements is not sufficient to engage in substitute work

Substitute Work – Unregistered Teacher

• You can engage in substitute work as an unregistered person:

– B.Eds (anyone without a teaching council number)

5 day rule applies - can sub for five days and then must have a gap of a day

– Post grads who are registered with the TC under ‘Further Ed’ will not be restricted to the 5 day rule

• Current unqualified daily rate is €127.03 + 15.70 = €142.73 (Rate will increase again in Oct 2018)

• Vetting is a matter for the employer

Substitute Work – Registered Teacher

• Abundance of substitute work available

• Valuable in getting known by schools - often leads to longer term employment

• Qualified substitute rate increasing in October 2018

• Current daily rate: €165.96 + €20.51 = €186.47

• All substitute work counts towards increments (moving up the pay scale) and service for Supplementary Panel

Important – you need to have your Teaching Council registration prior to taking up a temporary or permanent job. Without this you can not be paid.

From 1 Feb 2012 start on Point 1 of the scale

Graduate on 1 September 2018 will start on €35,958

Rising to €36,318 on 1 October 2018

Increasing up to €70,795 (Over 27 years)

Paid every second Thursday

Schools will input sub days worked for payment on the Online Claims System

Substitute teachers will always be at least two weeks behind in salary due to the early closure for substitute claims through the OLCS

Casual rate – if you have worked <40 days in school year

Non-casual rate – after you have worked more than 40 days in a school year

Non-casual sub teachers entitled to paid leave e.g. - sick leave, maternity leave, wedding leave, family illness leave etc. Can also apply to take EPV days.

Fixed term teachers – holiday pay

If a teacher takes up a temporary contract before the first working day in November they will be paid until August 31st.

If a teachers takes up a temporary contract after the first working day in November, they may be entitled to retrospective holiday pay for the summer if they secure a further fixed term contract for the following school year which does not end any earlier than a year from the start date of the previous contract

Probation -100 school days or 2 periods of 50 consecutive school days

Professional competence verified by Inspector visits

Must attend 10 NIPT induction seminars

Droichead Droichead is being introduced on a phased

basis:

• 2017/2018: teachers in SEN settings & schools with 24+ mainstream teachers

• 2018/2019: teachers in SEN settings & schools with 16+ teachers

• 2019/2020: teachers in SEN settings & schools with administrative principals

• 2020/2021: only route of induction for all NQTs
