The American Heart Association Variable—Potentially at MIT Summer Research Fellow

Program Description The American Heart Association supports highly promising, undergraduate students for full-time research fellowships over a minimum of a ten-week period during the summer. The goal of this program is to encourage students to pursue careers in cardiovascular research. Research projects with broad relevance to cardiovascular biology and stroke will be considered. The research must be performed within the eight states of the Founders Affiliate region which includes Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont. Fellowship Requirements An eligible student should be enrolled in a full time undergraduate degree program (Please note: an MD granting program is not an undergraduate degree program) at the time of application submission, main-tained a cumulative GPA ³ 3.0, and have identified an established researcher to serve as a sponsor for the fellowship project. Students should be currently classified at the sophomore, junior or senior academic status at the time of award application. The student must be available for full-time research, and will receive the $5000 fellowship as a stipend. Payment will be made to the institution for disbursement to the student. Direct use of award funds to pay tuition is pro-hibited. The sponsor will mentor the student to develop and implement a summer research project, and provide all rea-gents and supplies for its completion. National Journalism Center Washington, D.C. Journalism Intern

Since 1977, the National Journalism Center, a project of Young America's Foundation, has provided aspiring conserva-

tive and libertarian journalists with the premier opportunity to learn the principles and practice of responsible reporting.

The National Journalism Center combines 12 weeks of on-the-job training at a Washington, D.C.-based media outlet

and once-weekly training seminars led by prominent journalists, policy experts, and NJC faculty.

The program matches interns with print, broadcast, or online media outlets based on their interests and experience. In-

terns spend 30 hours/week gaining practical, hands-on journalism experience. Potential placements include The Wash-

ington Times, The Washington Examiner, CNN, Fox News Channel, and more.

Students will attend the NJC seminar one day a week, sharpening their writing and investigative reporting skills and

gaining a better understanding of media, society, and public policy, and the intersection between the three in Washing-

ton, D.C.

ternal communications includes researching and writing articles on URC-CHS’ work, facilitating broader engagement with the

international development community with external audiences through events coordination; developing and disseminating

press releases; and providing guidance on communications techniques. Internal communications includes collaboration with

the URC-CHS Knowledge Management Working Group; communications training, including guidance on writing, presenta-

tions, and communication strategy development; and managing the URC-CHS intranet.

Roles and Responsibilities:

The Communications Intern will assist with conveying results of URC and CHS domestic and international projects through

multiple formats. The Intern will contribute to the company’s communications strategy and employ creative communications

techniques including print and new media to inform audiences about URC and CHS. The Communications Intern reports to

the Communications Director, and works as part of a five-member Communications Team. He/she will work with public

health and project management professionals to conceptualize and manage communications deliverables. The Communica-

tions Intern interacts frequently with colleagues at all levels of the company, including senior management staff.

Primary responsibilities include:

• Research and compile key “success story” statistics for use in a series of one-sheet country profiles highlighting URC’s work

• Work with relevant URC staff, at headquarters and in field offices, to vet and obtain approval for selected statistics

• Work with Media Department to develop “look and feel” of one-sheet template

This small group workshop aims to assist those new to the job or internship search by introducing multiple search methods, networking strategies, and action planning. CareerBridge, the Alumni Directory, and other key GECD resources will also be dis-cussed within the context of attendees' personal career goals. This event is specifical-ly targeted to students beginning their first job or internship search.
