1- A trend over time (upward trend, downward trend or stable trend).

2- The size of the changes between data points. For example when did the greatest change occur?

3- What we can predict or estimate.

When interpreting a line graph the reader is usually looking for:

Page 3: Interpreting line graphs Session 3. 1- A trend over time (upward trend, downward trend or stable trend).trend 2- The size of the changes between data

Trend

Upward trend: there has been a steady/sudden/dramatic increase. Downward trend: there has been a steady.....decrease.

1.

Upward trend

Downward trend

Pattern

The general direction that a group of points seem to be heading

2. The size of the changes between data points. For example when did the greatest change occur?

When was the heart rate at highest level?

When was the growth rate fastest?

3- What we can predict or estimate.

Estimate the height of the plant after 6 weeks?

Extracting and reading data form line graphs

1- Start at the point for Wednesday on the horizontal axis2- Go straight until you find the point on the line for Wednesday and then across to the vertical axis3- Give the reading

Find the temperature on Wednesday

The graph below shows a plant growth over several weeks.Refer to the graph to answer the following questions:•What is the scale on the vertical axis? ________________•What was the height of the plant at the start? _______________•Predict the height of the plant after 6 weeks. ________________•Describe the trend of the graph ______________________

This graph shows the pulse rate of Dina after running in the Junior Quad, measured after each minute.

Refer to the graph to answer the following questions:•What is the scale on the vertical axis? ________________•What was the pulse rate at the start? ________________•When was the pulse rate highest? ___________________•What result can be drawn from the graph? _____________________________________________________________

Word MeaningTrend A line running up the side of a graph

Horizontal axis The general direction that a group of points seem to be heading.

Scale A line running across the graph

Vertical axis A scale is a series of numbers that are increasing or decreasing by the same amount.
