• KNOW what is meant by ‘Interpretation’ in a variety of contexts

• UNDERSTAND what elements of a play can be interpreted differently, for different meanings

Interpretation

• What does interpretation mean?

• For example an interpreter of languages is conscious of the original speech or text, but is also conscious of how to construct a different version.

• The interpreter may put their own ‘spin’ on it or even distort the original meaning completely.

• Anyone interested in music is familiar with the idea of interpretation. One example is Leonard Cohen who wrote Hallelujah in 1984. It has been recorded by 47 different artists including John Cale in the film Shrek.

In what ways can we discuss interpretation?

Consider the following questions –

• Does the text need to be cut or adapted?• Are there additions? (Props, set, music)

• What period or style will the visual elements reflect?

• What will the style of acting be?• Who makes these decisions?

1. Consider how you can interpret this scene in performance to convey different meaning to an audience. Explore the pace, timing and space to see how these can become reflections of your character’s feelings and attitudes, and the ways these affect your relationship in the scene.

2. Prepare two different versions and then perform them. What reactions do you get from your audience?
