INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS

WHAT DOES THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM CURRENTLY LOOK LIKE?

YOUTH PROGRAMS - SUMMER INTERNS

• The Department implemented the Summer Interns program as an

extension of the Future Grads program established in 2012.

• This program supported then-Mayor Lee's Summer Programs-Plus initiative

and has expanded to support Mayor London Breed's Opportunities for All

initiative, which was launched in October 2018.

• To provide paid internships throughout the city, the Department's Summer

Interns program partners with:

o Several community-based organizations including Mo' Magic,

Mission Education Program, and the Boys and Girls Clubs

o A local tech group -- the San Francisco Citizens Initiative for

Technology

o As well as the School District and other City agencies

• Since 2012, over 1,950 youth have been placed in paid internships through

coordination by our Community Engagement Division including:

o Project Pull — funded through the SF Public Utilities Commission

• Students are placed in positions within the Police Department

o Future Grads — sfciti partnership

• Students are placed in various technology companies and work

on specific projects

o Youth Career Academy

• In partnership with the Sheriff, Adult and Juvenile Probation,

District Attorney, and Public Defender, inters learn about jobs

in criminal justice system

o Community Safety Initiative

• In partnership with Mo' Magic, students are placed in different

positions throughout the Police Department

• The goal of this program is to provide students with hands-on training

where they learn valuable skills as well as project management and team

building techniques.

• Above all, the student build long lasting relationships with their mentor and

create a new broader community for themselves.

PAID PART-TIME POLICE CADETS

• In addition to the summer interns, the Department has a paid part-time

Police Cadet program

• Since the program was re-introduced in 2015, there have been 135 cadets

who have participated in the program.

• There are currently 52 SFPD Cadets

o 33 working in various units throughout the department

o 19 who will graduate on April 6 from the cadet academy

• The vision of the program is to provide a service for the City and the

community as it develops young adults as future leaders in the community.

• The goals of the Police Cadet program:

o Expose young adults to various aspects of police work to prepare

them for a career in law enforcement.

o Provide quality candidates for law enforcement-related positions

including: Police Officer, Community Police Services Aide or 911

Dispatcher.

• Qualifications

o High School Diploma / G.E.D.

o Currently enrolled in college with 12 units

o Minimum G.P.A of 2.0

o Valid Driver's License

o Pass a POST background

SFPAL VOLUNTEER - CADET PROGRAM

• Through the Police Activities League program, the Department supports the

Law Enforcement Cadet program.

• Established in 1959, the program provides opportunities for growth,

leadership, and career experience to youth.

• There are currently 40 SFPAL Cadets, with a class held each summer

• The on-line application process opens on March 6 for the Cadet class

scheduled for June 2019, opens March 6, 2019

Year-round internship program:

• Graduates of the 4-week Summer Cadet Academy are eligible to intern at

SFPD District Stations where they have the opportunity to gain job and

career skills in a structured environment supervised by police officers.

• SFPAL Cadets assist at Department ceremonies (graduations, promotion,

CIT awards, law enforcement memorials) and district station community

events where they engage in community service (hours are tracked and

used by students to meet academic requirements).

• Examples include support of Special Olympics, Make a Wish Brave the Bay,

The Polar Plunge, Mission Station Toy Drive, holiday events, Carnaval, etc

Ongoing training and community service

• Three Thursdays each month, PAL Cadets meet at the Police Academy for

additional training and learning opportunities including: rules of law,

Department operations, policies, procedures and community engagement.

• Participate in physical conditioning and training

• Engage in program activities centered on areas that develop and strengthen

job and life skills including:

o Sense of service to others and civic responsibility;

o Leadership experience.

o Public Speaking

• Qualifications

o Youth age 14-20 (Eligible to participate until 21 years of age)

o Able to participate in the summer training program in June and

commit for one full year to program goals and requirements

o Reside or attend school in San Francisco (high school or college,

maintaining a minimum 2.0 GPA

o Must complete an SFPD background check (criminal history and

driving record)

o Pass a background

Additional programs that the youth can participate in that is organized by SFPD

SFPD Wilderness Program:

• Hiking

• Kayaking

• White water rafting

• Camping

Community Police Youth Academy (CPYA)

• Similar to our Community Police Academy (CPA) for adults.

Operation Genesis

• Provides opportunities for at-risk youth to learn strategies for

socioeconomic advancement and combat generational poverty through

global travel, cultural exposure, academic and career counseling,

community engagement and personal mentorship

• Since its inception, 150 students have been served

DESCRIBE HOW THE OUR PROGRAM IS BEING EXPANDED

• SFPD's youth internship programs are expanding to include more job fields:

o For example the Future Graduates program was geared toward the

technology industry.

o We have expanded to include interior design companies,

architecture, and other SF companies.

• The Youth Career Academy (YCA) by Operation Genesis and Officer Jason

Johnson will expand to include EMT and Science Technology Engineering

Mathematics (STEM).

• The SFPD will continue to support Project Pull, SF Youth Works, Mayor's

Youth Employment Education Program, and Community Safety Initiative

(CSI) with their summer job programs.

OUTREACH/RECRUITMENT

• The Department attends numerous City youth career fairs and community

based organization career fairs to recruit for our summer job programs.

We have asked the district station captains to work with their local

community groups to provide names of youth interested in participating

• For the Wilderness Program, we work with the public schools and during

the summer connect with various community based organizations (CB0s).

o Boy's & Girl's club

o YMCA

o Cameron House

o Community Youth Center (CYC)

o WestBay

• The goal is to recruit youth throughout San Francisco with a focus on

underserved areas to give youths a chance to see career opportunities.

• We ask the School Resource Officers to promote summer jobs and other

youth activities.

FOR ADULTS

The San Francisco Police Department offers an unpaid college internship for

students who are interested in exploring career options within law enforcement.

Orientation for this program takes place three times a year:

• June (for summer term)

• August ( for Fall semester)

• February (for Spring Semester)

In order to be considered, applicants must be

• Must be 18 or older at the time of application.

• Able to work at least 12 hours a week

• Must be currently enrolled and attending an accredited college or

university, with a minimum course load of 12 semesters units (18 quarter

units) and a minimum 2.0 GPA. A copy of current course registration and/or

grade report must be submitted with application.

• Pass a CA POST background which includes:

o Being a U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien who is eligible for

and has applied for citizenship.

o A licensed driver and an acceptable driving record.

o With no a felony convictions or convictions that prohibit ownership,

possession, or control of a firearm.

• The Department is working with the Mayor's Budget Office to secure the

hiring authority to launch our new SFPD Graduate Student Summer

Internship Program.

• The Department currently accepts interns through the several of the City's

program, including

o The City's Summer Student Intern Program — which is geared toward

college student

o The Mayor's internship program

o The Fellows Program
