Why Finnish Forest Research Institute?

Good for my:

• Bachelor’s thesis

• prospective Master’s studies in forestry

• career in forestry in Finland.

• research materials for my thesis

• better Finnish skills.

What did I get?

• new knowledge in the tree reproduction

• experience in the Finnish forestry

• a relevant thesis topic and a supervisor

Research assistant: research in mushroom ecology

Luke’s phytoremediation project:

• Somerharju, Eastern Finland, researches since 2013• The soil severely polluted with the oil products - creosote• How efficient are aspen tree plantations for purifying the soil?• How well do young aspens survive under the pollution?

So, where are mushrooms there?

• Mushrooms – tree symbionts – help trees to survive and to purify the soil• Consider them in researching the tree survival and purification abilities!

Side project + thesis research on mushroom ecology

• Mycorrhizal mushroom species richness and diversity in PAH polluted areas by the example of Somerharju, Finland

Page 8: Internship presentation

My research scope• How many mushroom species are there?

• How many fruit bodies are there?

• Do mushroom species richness and diversity depend on the pollution level?

What did I do?• Developed the research set-up

• Sought & sampled mushrooms

• Selected the mycorrhizal mushrooms

• Identified the species

• Counted fruit bodies
