This pilot project should alert us about the possible risks and difficulties associated with running the main program on 6000 families and thus, we can plan accordingly. Though I was not directly involved in the theoretical formulisation of the study, as the aforementioned project has beenongoingforthelasttwoyears,ourteamcontinuallymettodiscusshowtoensurethat theory be translated astutely into practice without facing much bottlenecks.For estimating the impacts of cash transfers on nutrition, the group assigned a cash offer of p = c to the treatment group and compared it with the control group. They also questioned me about my previous projects and internships. Apart from me, the company selected 1 more Student from my batch for its technical team and 2 students from senior batch for the management team. The interview went on for about 1-1.5 hour. Contrary to my initial apprehensions, I was very relieved after joining there. Though housing is generally referred to as startup, it is pretty big for a startup. The company employs more than 1000 people and is expanding ferociously. Recently, the company received approximately 115 crore of venture funding. No formals, no blocked websites and no restrictions. one of the best part about working at housing is the freedom the company gives to its employees. Office is for 5 days a week, and timings are very flexible. My intial Project was to develop an A/B testing framework in nodejs using Websocket connections, I didn't had much exprerience working with nodejs so I had to learn nodejs to finish the project but the people there were very helpful. I finished my first project half way through the intern. and was assigned a second project in which I had to assist in making a vertical search engine on real estate. We used Apache Nutch as the crawler and used some Reinforcement learning and tfidf algorithms to identify page relevance. In the second project I was assigned another mentor he was the head of New Technologies Team. The perks and positives of the company: To start with, we were decently paid(25k per month),were given flight tickets for our travel to mumbai and were provided with a MacBook Pro to work with during the course of internship (Sadly, they take it back at the end of internship). Food at Housing is awesome. They provided us breakfast, lunch, evening snacks and leisure foods like fruits, fruit juices, ice creams, flakes, etc. Housing pampers its employees and even interns are treated the same, without any discrimination. The work environment is very cheerful and you make friends very easily as majority of the employees are just 2-3 years senior then you. The entire office was covered with football jerseys, cutouts of football players and few footballs during the FIFA World Cup. Apart from work at office, we had regular treats, a pool party and were taken to Transformers in this short period of 2 months. Unlike the theory courses, I had to design a distributed system and this meant that I had to deal with parallel programming, asynchronous tasks, threads, synchronization constructs beyond theory. This was a very enriching experience for me as not only did I get to implement some of the esoteric things that I had learned in theory in a production system. The first half of the internship was spent in reading papers, which will be the case with most research internships. It's tedious but well worth the effort because you get to know the latest developments in the field. One thing to note is that in MSR, you get to learn about deployed systems, i.e., the state of the art architectures that are being used presently all across the world by giants like Google, Yahoo!, IBM. The second half dealth with the implementation of the architecture that I came up with. The good parts of MSR is that you get to work on projects that effect the industry presently and you get to work with people from all over the world. One way to deal with the negligence of the mentors is to give a regular report to the person who is the head of your mentor or to the HR who is in-charge of the internship program and the technical head who is in charge of the internship program. Also, you have to give presentation at the end. But they do not encourage any application of your findings. But some mentors are very good. Don't worry about the summer heat. It may happen that the project you are assigned, you may not be comfortable with it. So, it can be changed there if you talk to them. But should select your project carefully and wisely to prevent these circumstances. Mentors can also be changed if you dont like them. However, I would like to convey the learning opportunities one has at a startup, and how important a startup intern is for an aspiring entrepreneur. Given people put effort in finding a "good" startup, the experience is no doubt enriching.
