Research Intern: Syracuse University, NY, US Unforgettable experience. Great international exposure. More information on future options like graduatestudiesandjobsabroad.Alotofinteractionwithpeoplehavingdifferentcultural background. No problems in applying (though US Visa application is a bit hectic). My mentors were extremely satisfied with the work (and I myself am). It was a wonderful experience and I would encourage many more students to take up research at some point of time in their life. I got an opportunity this summers to work in a policy based research outfit, Abdul Latif Jameel PovertyActionLab,orJ-PALasitispopularlyknownas.J-PALowesitsconceptiontothe EconomicsprofessorsofMITwhofelttheneedofgreaterroleofevidencebasedpolicies, especially in the emerging economies. Consequently, J-PAL has developed a global expertise over theyearsinconductinglargescaleRandomizedControlTrialsandprovidingtheeconomic researchers with rich and reliable data to base their theories upon. IwasspecificallyinvolvedinoneoftheirRCTsbasedoutofGayadistrict,Biharwherethe researchers were working upon to test the success of an alternative to the historical subsidised food distribution system in India. The professors supervising the project are stalwarts in the field of Development Economics Dr. Karthik Muralidharan, Associate Professor of Economics, UCSD, Dr.SandeepSukhtankar,AssistantProfessorofEconomics,DartmouthCollegeandDr.Paul Niehaus, Assistant Professor of Economics, UCSD. Theprimarygoalsoftheprojectweretoestimatethebeneficiaries'valuationsoftheTPDS (TargetedPublicDistributionSystem),comparethesevaluationstothecostsofrunningthe program, and finally compare the overall effects of status-quo TPDS versus a direct cash transfer onoutcomesthatpolicy-makersmaybeinterestedin.Allhouseholddatacollectedwere identifiedbythehousehold'sIDnumberandtheirmonthlychoicesbetweencashandin-kind options were directly observed (Revealed Preferences). I was assisting a team of 5 researchers looking after the implementation design of this large scale RCT which was to be conducted on over 6000 families. During the summers, we were running a pilot program involving 480 families, comprising 120 families from each of the four blocks of Gaya District. This pilot project should alert us about the possible risks and difficulties associated with running the main program on 6000 families and thus, we can plan accordingly. Though I was not directly involved in the theoretical formulisation of the study, as the aforementioned project has beenongoingforthelasttwoyears, ourteamcontinuallymettodiscusshowtoensurethat theory be translated astutely into practice without facing much bottlenecks. For estimating the impacts of cash transfers on nutrition, the group assigned a cash offer of p = c to the treatment group and compared it with the control group. That would bias our results from the study. Thus, werandomlytestedtheenumerationandbaselinesurveyquestionnaireswithselected program participants and suggested improvements in its design. This helped to make the results emanating from the study more robust. J-PAL, South Asia is trying to leverage the facilities of mobile based call enter for the first time in one of its RCTs to address the problems faced by the program participants, and I was entrusted with the task of facilitating it. I customized a software Kreato for the online database storage of beneficiaries details and integrated it with a PRI interface Exotel. Since J-PAL is not just interested in providing solutions to these queries that flow in from the beneficiaries side, but also looking forpatternsandtrendsinthem, whichcanbecomprehendedmeaningfully,Iranpreliminary analysesofthetextualcomplaintsonSTATA(aneconometricsoftware).Thisinformationwas then relayed to the concerned person to alleviate the problems on the ground as soon as possible. Apartfromthis,Iwasalsoresponsibleforputtingthecallcenterinplace, recruitmentofcall center executives to oversee the working of the call center, and also their training which involved educating them about every single intricate detail of the program. FieldbasedresearchinDevelopmentEconomicsismorethanjusttheoreticalmodellingand verifying some standard hypotheses. It also entails creating the ideal environment which would allow our human subjects to respond appropriately to the choices we provide them. That was a big take away for me from the project. I should add here that the experience at J-PAL provided me with a handsome practical field experience and see closely why the beneficiaries of the some of the mega schemes of the government feel a disconnect with the entire policy implementation architecture. Apart from adding to my skill set I got to to know about the work culture abroad and also learnt about the research opportunity in foreign countries. Since I had no prior knowledge about Bayesian statistics, it was a challenge and a lot of fun to learn newconceptsandtoapplythemintheprojectassignedtome.Overall, theworkwashighly satisfying since I always wanted an internship in statistics but unfortunately could not do much courses in the mentioned field due to academic restrictions in my department :P . It has been a great learning and motivating experience for me to work at TAMU. I personally feel that through a research intern at Texas A&M University, I have become a team player who knows about project management, budget optimization and problem solving strategies. Solving through strategy is the basic principle of work at the lab, consequentially leading to an influx of ideas.ComingontheotherimportantfactorwhichIhavetheprivilegetoexperienceisthecultural heritage of America. Many students who apply for this program are not sure what 'Boeing Externship ProgramI' really is, so, here is a little note:- ItwasanexternshipthatwasfundedbytheBoeingandwehadtoworkat'BoeingCentreof Excellence'whichisapartofthe'Cyientcompany'.Cyientisanindependentcompanythat provide engineering solutions to many engineering industries, one of which is Boeing. The experience was quite satisfying in overall sense. Cyient company basically works for boeing onstructure relatedanalysisanddesign workon CADsoftware (noexperiments involved) .So you probably will be working on structural analysis in any of the CAD software like Catia, Ansys or Nastra and Patran. It is okay if you are hearing about these software for first time( that was the case with) because they will teach you about those in few initial weeks. Also, one more thing worth to mention is that you will get to interact with Boeing people who will come twice during your internship. Few of them are generally from IITs who are at very good position in the organisation. They are always very supportive if you ask them about career choices or foreign studies. I would say they were the coolest alumnis of IITs I have ever met. Do utilize their knowledge to help yourself regarding the career choices if you get the chance.BEST OF LUCK! Name of Program/University Boeing Externship Program COMMENTS FROM STUDENTS DOING INTERN THROUGH SPO Name:Rishikesh Mishra Interned at:ABB Global Industries and Services Addr:Ph:Email:Please provide a brief overview of your experience and the work that you did there My work primarily involved initial research to explore R&D possibilities in optimisation of steel production process. The main goal was to build a quantifiable base upon which optimisation possibilities could be explored. The best thing about working with ABB Corporate Research was that it was a mixture of pure research with corporate environment rather than for pure academic purposes. While direct implementation in case of my project would not be visible for probably a few years to come, I got to explore a lot of exploration and scientific techniques, learning the difference between science and engineering and the corporate R&D environment, where the push for excellence is much higher due to well defined objectives. Name:Shrey Verma Interned at:General Electric Addr:Ph:Email:Please provide a brief overview of your experience and the work that you did there My work was mostly on analyzing the structural stability of Gas Turbine Lugs. I used the concepts of Advanced Mechanics of Solids and the design database of GE to analyze the probability of failure of lugs due to the weight of the GT. Apart from this, I also did a case study on the problems faced by Compressor Section and the general pattern of solution developed by GE. In all, it was a great experience as I learnt what work in a core research company meant. I also had a great time as the facilities provided by GE were very helpful and the work culture there really encouraged you to give it your best. Name:Rohit Kumar Jha Interned at:Goldman Sachs Addr:Ph:Email:Please provide a brief overview of your experience and the work that you did there Overall the experience was good. I got to interact with, possibly, the best bunch of people one can have at a place. It was a great learning experience. I am not at liberty to talk about the work. Overall my work involved implementing and analyzing some proprietary GS Strategies. Name:Ayush Mittal Interned at:Microsoft Research India Addr:Ph:Email:Please provide a brief overview of your experience and the work that you did there Most important thing about interning at a research lab is that whether interns really do some research work or do only implementations. At most places interns end up doing the second part with almost zero research work. But, I was given a completely abstract problem to work on in my internship and I had freedom to explore solutions to the problems on my own and design my own algorithms to solve them. This was the most important thing for me. Rest all things like work culture, food etc. were really good as we expect from a company like Microsoft. Name:J Siva Chandra Interned at:Samsung Research Institute Bangalore Addr:Ph:Email:Please provide a brief overview of your experience and the work that you did there I worked in Multimedia division, my project was on stereo disparity estimation with sub-pixel accuracy. It was basically implementation of a paper and further improving on it. It was a great experience and the work was challenging. Name:Rohun Tripati Interned at:Samsung Research Noida Addr:Ph:Email:Please provide a brief overview of your experience and the work that you did there My work was to implement rnnlib a neural networks library for text transcription to understand the input provided using a stylus device to an android application. Something like a text recognition tool without HMM. I would not rate SRI-Noida as the best internship destination. My project was good (of my choice) and my mentor was really learned. Thus, for me it was a great learning experience. But for some of my fellow students it was very boring. They had very lousy or no work at all and used to waste full days. Another issue was the 9-6 timing of the office. They had a policy that required one to be in office from 10-5 plus two more hours before or after, otherwise it would lead to a pay-cut! This was very discouraging, when compared to offices thats value work done more then time spent in office. The plus were some chill time everyday, access to youtube (and most other sites if you are able to figure out a way). Also at times th work was good (my case). But at times it was not upto the mark and boring. Name:Dhruv Anand Interned at:Adobe Research Labs Addr:E-109, Hall 1Ph:9005835499Email:[email protected] provide a brief overview of your experience and the work that you did there Adobe has an experienced set of researchers working on areas such as social media marketing and web analytics. The interns get to work under these researchers on a problem that they choose themselves in one of these areas. The project involves designing new algorithms or processes (and testing them) that could potentially be incorporated into Adobe's analytics products. The workload on the internship is quite light and there are no fixed timings in which you must be in the office. The amount of coding you need to do in your project is also pretty low as compared to some other tech companies. There is an added bonus for being able to file patents at the end of the internship and there is also a possibility of getting a paper published based on your work there. Name:Gaurush Hiranandani Interned at:Adobe Systems India Pvt. Ltd. The problem we aimed at was, How to inspire a creative artist to create new art work? We used a lot of existing tools like Dmoz, Word2vec and deep CNN, but the root of the problem was in the mathematical modelling over the outputs of these technologies. And there we applied our innovative minds. It's one of the internships which provides scope of industrial research work with lot of fun involved. Also, if someone is really money minded, then Adobe also provides huge scope of issuing patents. I can list the important factors behind it: 1. It is a start up company so I had to work for really long hours (12 hrs average) each day. 2. Work is mostly databasing which tends to be damn boring. 3. You don't get any amenities apart from INR 20000. Travel expenses, Food and other expenses have to be borne by you. 4. Not much to learn. 5. They treat like you cheap labour. My work for most of my term was to analyse financial reports of different companies active in US Onshore oil plays and to capture data points (reserve, production etc). In other words, Data basing . I did an additional project in which we were supposed to predict the deal value for assets owned by the company which they were willing to sell. In short avoid this company as far as possible unless you want to get frustrated, irritated and depressed. Cheers!! They also questioned me about my previous projects and internships. Apart from me, the company selected 1 more Student from my batch for its technical team and 2 students from senior batch for the management team. The interview went on for about 1-1.5 hour. Contrary to my initial apprehensions, I was very relieved after joining there. Though housing is generally referred to as startup, it is pretty big for a startup. The company employs more than 1000 people and is expanding ferociously. Recently, the company received approximately 115 crore of venture funding. No formals, no blocked websites and no restrictions. one of the best part about working at housing is the freedom the company gives to its employees. Each intern is given a lot of freedom, much more than what I initially thought. I was free to surf through any website I liked and never felt like I was being monitored by some sort of Big Brother. Office is for 5 days a week, and timings are very flexible. I worked from 1PM-8PM, except for Mondays, when I went to office even late after watching that days episode of GoT.Each Intern was assigned a mentor, I Worked with Snehil buxy, He was one of the co-founders and was also the head of the product development team. he was the one who initially made the housing website. My intial Project was to develop an A/B testing framework in nodejs using Websocket connections, I didn't had much exprerience working with nodejs so I had to learn nodejs to finish the project but the people there were very helpful. I finished my first project half way through the intern. and was assigned a second project in which I had to assist in making a vertical search engine on real estate. We used Apache Nutch as the crawler and used some Reinforcement learning and tfidf algorithms to identify page relevance. In the second project I was assigned another mentor he was the head of New Technologies Team. The perks and positives of the company: To start with, we were decently paid(25k per month),were given flight tickets for our travel to mumbai and were provided with a MacBook Pro to work with during the course of internship (Sadly, they take it back at the end of internship). Food at Housing is awesome. They provided us breakfast, lunch, evening snacks and leisure foods like fruits, fruit juices, ice creams, flakes, etc. Housing pampers its employees and even interns are treated the same, without any discrimination. The work environment is very cheerful and you make friends very easily as majority of the employees are just 2-3 years senior then you. The entire office was covered with football jerseys, cutouts of football players and few footballs during the FIFA World Cup. Apart from work at office, we had regular treats, a pool party and were taken to Transformers in this short period of 2 months. As the office was in Hiranandani itself, which is close to IIT Bombay I didnt face an issue with travel. Overall, it was an experience to cherish and I completely loved my time at Housing. Unlike the theory courses, I had to design a distributed system and this meant that I had to deal with parallel programming, asynchronous tasks, threads, synchronization constructs beyond theory. This was a very enriching experience for me as not only did I get to implement some of the esoteric things that I had learned in theory in a production system. The first half of the internship was spent in reading papers, which will be the case with most research internships. It's tedious but well worth the effort because you get to know the latest developments in the field. One thing to note is that in MSR, you get to learn about deployed systems, i.e., the state of the art architectures that are being used presently all across the world by giants like Google, Yahoo!, IBM. The second half dealth with the implementation of the architecture that I came up with. The good parts of MSR is that you get to work on projects that effect the industry presently and you get to work with people from all over the world. The lab had people from London, Stanford, MIT and hence you get a lot of exposure. The only downside I believe was the amount of work they give you; the environment is laxed and hence you will not be enjoined to work like carzy. You get to take your time and there is not set timeline, which is conducive to learning; but might lead to feeling that you didn't accomplish as much as you wanted by the end of the internship. Name:Smith Gupta Interned at:Qualcomm, Hyderabad Addr:Room No. E-118, Hall 9,Ph:9651739279Email:[email protected] provide a brief overview of your experience and the work that you did there The major objective of internships is that you can explore various fields and can judge for yourself, if you are comfortable with it or not. Qualcomm gives you a variety of fields to choose from, you are free to walk in anyones office and ask them to give you a project in that field and theyll be happy to help you. At the end of the internship you may find an area of research which you actually like and Qualcomm will be the best place to get the first hand gist of that. The Idea Quest competition that Qualcomm organizes for the interns is quite one of its kind. You get to brainstorm ideas with your fellow interns and its a huge learning opportunity to work on an idea as the shortlisted ideas are really aimed to invent the Next Big Thing. One way to deal with the negligence of the mentors is to give a regular report to the person who is the head of your mentor or to the HR who is in-charge of the internship program and the technical head who is in charge of the internship program. Also, you have to give presentation at the end. But they do not encourage any application of your findings. But some mentors are very good. Don't worry about the summer heat. It may happen that the project you are assigned, you may not be comfortable with it. So, it can be changed there if you talk to them. But should select your project carefully and wisely to prevent these circumstances. Mentors can also be changed if you dont like them. Also, no one will take interest in your progress unless you make an effort and show interest. But at the end, they need results. Also, don't try to stay in rooms as it creates problem at the end. However, I would like to convey the learning opportunities one has at a startup, and how important a startup intern is for an aspiring entrepreneur. Given people put effort in finding a "good" startup, the experience is no doubt enriching. One thing a person must understand - You need to have a core competency to be able to do some meaningful work at a startup. With a small team, you get ownership of work, under different verticals.
