BACKGROUND

Aqua culture is mainly effected by

DO control

Temperature control

Biological filtration

Water management

Traditional vs modern aquaculture

Page 4: Internet of things in aqua cultureAPHRDI/2018/2-feb/iot/… · INTERNET OF THINGS IN AQUA CULTURE AN INITIATIVE AT ANU Mrs.N.Anupama Asst Prof CSE department namburianupama@gmail.com

DO CONTROL

DO is important chemical parameter in aquaculture .

If DO level drops in a water body then the fishescould not survive.

Over a matter of hours, or sometimes evenminutes, DO can change from optimum to lethallevels.

Three factors effect the DO

oxygen is not very soluble in water so water has onlya limited capacity to “hold” oxygen.

the rate of oxygen use by fish and organisms living inthe pond mud can be high.

oxygen diffuses very slowly from the atmosphere intoundisturbed water

Page 5: Internet of things in aqua cultureAPHRDI/2018/2-feb/iot/… · INTERNET OF THINGS IN AQUA CULTURE AN INITIATIVE AT ANU Mrs.N.Anupama Asst Prof CSE department namburianupama@gmail.com

DO CONTROL

Dissolved oxygen levels can be managed with

aeration.

Response time for taking corrective measures is

short.

The Do level maintained should be 3-5mg/L.

If DO<4mg/L then pressure increases on fishes.

If DO <= 0.6 mg/L then it causes death of fishes.

To react to the situation, a fast and reliable

method of measuring DO should be done and

should activate the aeration.

TEMPERATURE CONTROL

Fishes are cold blooded and keep same

temperature around it.

The growth, feeding reproduction of fishes are

effected by temperature and metabolic rate in

fish doubles with increase in temperature.

Temperature increase make fishes irresistible to

diseases.

The optimum temperature to be maintained is

between 23 to 30o C.

As the temperature increases in the water the

DO decreases.

Page 7: Internet of things in aqua cultureAPHRDI/2018/2-feb/iot/… · INTERNET OF THINGS IN AQUA CULTURE AN INITIATIVE AT ANU Mrs.N.Anupama Asst Prof CSE department namburianupama@gmail.com

TEMPERATURE CONTROL

Axial flow devices on surface of water and air

diffusers at the bottom can propel water up ad

down to maintain temperature.

BIOLOGICAL FILTRATION

In many ways ammonia is produced in water.

Release of nitrogenous waste by fishes and other aquatic organisms from the gills

Urine and solid wastes.

Excess feeds left in water

Ammonia is toxic to fishes and result in poor growth and lower resistance to diseases.

The amount of ammonia is measure with PH (potential of Hydrogen) level.

PH value ranges from 0 to 14. Less PH more ammonia present.

The PH>6 and <8 in water and continuous monitoring is needed to maintain it.

WATER MANAGEMENT

The maintenance of good water quality is essential forboth survival and optimum growth of cultureorganisms.

Most of the water quality problems can be solved withadequate water exchange.

When stocking density increases, water should besupplied to maintain good water quality.

Besides aeration, sanitizers, zeolite water enhancer ,water exchange is still the most effective and widelyemployed method.

water exchange is used to adjust salinity as desired,to remove excess metabolites, to keep algae healthyand producing ample oxygen and to regulate pondwater temperature.

WATER MANAGEMENT

Controlled water exchange.

Co-ordinating water exchange and fertilization to

maintain populations of algae.

Avoid overfeeding through proper management of

feeding.

Aeration.

Continual or periodic removal of accumulated

organic material from the pond bottom.

Maintenance of a high density bacterial flock i.e.

probiotics combined with water circulation and

aeration.

NEWS

Hindu: The extremities in weather conditions delivered a deadly blow

on Jampana Rama Raju, a fish farmer from Tadinada village in Undi

mandal of West Godavari district. Around 5-6 tonnes of the fish in his

100-acre pond worth Rs. 5 lakh died in the last two days due to

deficiency in oxygen levels caused by sudden changes in the climate.

TRADITIONAL AQUA CULTURE

Farm scale will be larger and larger

More Human /labor required

Labor cost increasing

Maintenance of water resources and environment

is difficult.

Problems due to lack of timely response from the

farmers.

Controlling the machines and tools is manual.

APPLICATION OF IOT TO AQUA CULTURE

Monitoring DO levels

Monitoring PH values

Water management

Send the SMS to farmer about the status of

these values.

Farmer switches on/off the pumps, motors ,

aerators or the diffusers based on response.

Monitoring fishes behaviors using Digital image

processing application.

ARDUINO SOFTWARE

Arduino boards are able to read analog or digital

input signals from different sensors and turn it into

an output such as activating a motor, turning LED

on/off and many other actions.

You can control your board functions by sending a set

of instructions to the microcontroller on the board via

Arduino IDE (referred to as uploading software).

You can simply use a USB cable for uploading the

program.

Arduino IDE uses a simplified version of C

Page 25: Internet of things in aqua cultureAPHRDI/2018/2-feb/iot/… · INTERNET OF THINGS IN AQUA CULTURE AN INITIATIVE AT ANU Mrs.N.Anupama Asst Prof CSE department namburianupama@gmail.com

ARDUINO BOARDS

Various kinds of Aurdino boards are available

depending on different microcontrollers used.

Boards differ in Operating Voltage, clock speed,

and number of Digital I/O, Analog & PWM pins.

All Arduino boards have one thing in common:

they are programed through the Arduino IDE.

FUTURE WORK

We at ANU enhanced the images. Need to do still more research to analyze the enhanced images for the betterment of farmers.

We have measured only the Do, PH, temperature and water levels.

Still there are more parameters like tubidity, humidity, ammonia etc that need to be analyzed.

Automatic feeding system.

Intelligent Prediction, warning and controlling of the parameters.

Disease early warning and remote diagnostics.

Mobile APP to control the aerators, water supply remotely by the user.
