The first talk describes the results of usability testing with students usingthe Summon Discovery Layer, a hosted search service provided by Seri-als Solutions. Summon searches the library catalog, index and abstract-ing databases and full-text journal collections (as well as other targets). Itreports on a comparison of results between Summon and Google Scholar,and how journal usage changed after Summon was implemented. Thesecond presentation explores the use of semantic technology for morerelevant search. It describes the downloading and conversion ofPubMed/Medline records from the given XML to Resource DescriptionFramework (RDF) using the Dublin Core metadata vocabulary, then linkedto a MARC data set. It shares results from the searcher’s perspective anddiscusses the implications for the future of search.

District of Columbia Public Library releasedits iPhone app at the beginning of 2009 and was the first of a handful oflibraries that currently have apps in the App Store. Without the necessaryprogramming resources in-house or the funds to pay for outside develop-ment, you can rely on existing personnel (web developers) and resources(a web server) to build a polished web app in-house. Open source toolssuch as jQTouch offer a framework for developing a single app that worksacross iPhone, Android, and webOS devices. These apps have the lookand feel of a native iPhone app and can be updated at any moment by thelibrary, rather than on Apple’s timeframe.

Content of each network was customized to meet eachsection’s individual learning outcomes. This presentation describes howinstructors engaged students in information literacy concepts utilizingtools such as Twitter, RSS feeds, blogs, and podcasts via Ning. At the other end of the spectrum, Alcorn has worked with indi-vidual libraries and regional library support systems across Iowa, offeringtraining on some of the things that encompass Web 2.0 for libraries. Koer-ber presents what “23 Things for Patrons” could look like. She examinesthe possibilities, pitfalls; a variety of organizational tools that can scale toa large, diverse participant base; and presents several models as startingpoints for your own community training project. UC Irvine Libraries set about to develop a pilot project for patron-drivenacquisition (PDA) of ebooks with the goal of saving money in the collec-tions budget. The pilot was intended to allow ebooks to be purchased forcurrent-year imprints as a means of replacing a portion of the traditionalprint approval plan acquisitions. As the various e-book provider modelswere investigated, and as we developed the framework within which thepilot needed to operate, we were met with seemingly insurmountable obsta-cles at every turn: from the publishers’ reluctance to release print and elec-tronic books simultaneously — or at least within a specified embargo period— to the difficulty of integrating a PDA program with the print approval planto avoid purchasing content in duplicate formats. We would like to shareour experiences in the hopes that other libraries will join our efforts to con-vince e-book publishers and providers to make a patron-driven acquisitionof ebooks program more viable for libraries which wish to replace their tra-ditional print approval plans and better serve their user population.

The Smithsonian/NASA ADS is one of the pioneers of open access bibli-ographic databases. Operated under a NASA grant, it has grown from anindexing/abstracting database into a sophisticated, highly customizabledigital library available worldwide. Since the advent of online editions ofjournals, abstracts are loaded into the ADS on or before the publicationdate of articles, with the full journal text available to subscribers. Olderarticles and microfilm have been scanned and made available. Speakersshare their challenges, solutions, and lessons learned for others strugglingwith digital collections. LeBlanc discusses a departmental wiki and howit is evolving with other tools like blogs, discussion forums, and a videosharing tool. He shares tips and tricks on the adoption and training ofthese tools and others like Twitter and RSS. He highlights the library’s posi-tioning as a key player in a organization who is implementing social mediato become a more collaborative and knowledge sharing organization.

Research skillstrainer Tasha Bergson-Michelson uses case studies from her work with2nd to 8th graders in public and independent schools to illustrate the sur-prising things we can discover by listening to how students talk abouttheir own online and offline research experiences. She uncovers elementsof literacy that are unique to online environments—and sometimes con-trary to traditional methods of literacy learning—and demonstrates arefined set of research teaching methods focused on identification, visu-alization, iteration, and pursuit. She illustrates how these methods helpstudents (and even adults) develop new forms of reading that transformtheir confidence, competence, and engagement when undertakingresearch, both online and off.

Electronic information discovery tends to subtract traditional contextualclues. Digital natives can easily gather tremendous quantities of resourceswithout any real understanding of a particular topic. As such, youngresearchers are left drowning in information, which too often producessuperficial synthesis at best. On the other end of the spectrum lie grosslyoverdue assignments and plagiarized material. As information profession-als, we should put the lack of context on the educational radar. We needto recognize when our students are trying to navigate without it. We needto teach them to recognize the absence and strategies to build it back in.Join Sue Smith and Lauri Vaughan in an exploration of what University ofKansas anthropologist Michael Wesch coined the “collapse of context”and how to address it in the classroom.
