Internet:-

Computer System that allows millions of computer users around the world to exchange information. It is a global network connecting millions of devices. More than 100 countries are linked into exchanges of data, news and opinions. When two devices are connected over the Internet, they can send and receive all kinds of information such as text, image, voice, video, and other programs.

History of Internet:-

Internet was created way back in 1969, during the Cold War, by the United States military and moved over to the Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in late 1962 to head the work to develop it. It was meant to be a "nuke-proof" communications network. Today, the Internet spreads across the globe and consists of countless networks and computers, allowing millions of people to share information. Data that travels long distances on the Internet is transferred on huge lines known collectively as the Internet backbone.

Most”classical”netwoksconsisted of similar

computers. On the Internet we can find

all types of computers. Large ones, small ones, old ones, newones,Windows,Apple,Unix,Dos. Even any types of devices are connected over the net like GSM-Telephones.

CONNECTED IN”Classical”networks computers were mostly connected by means of electric cables. On the Internet the connection can also be made with telephone lines,ISDN,fiberglass,GSM,Satellites. Fast connections are called backbones, their capacity is called bandwidth. More and faster connections make the world seem smaller

COMMUNICATE In order to talk to each other, computers use a protocol. A protocol is a language which can exchange messages (packs of Zero’s and one’s).The computers can understand each other only if they all talk the same language. All computers on the Internet make use of the same protocol:

TCP/IP:-Transfer Control Protocol/Internet Protocol.

Page 9: Internet

INTERNET The Internet is a worldwide network where all computers use the same language to exchange information. All Internet applications like email news,WWW,use TCP/IP to communicate with each other.

“How the Internet has changed society in the last 10 years”

The biggest technology change of the last 10 years is changing into internet in mainstream society. It started with the widespread adoption of email. From that modest foothold, the internet grew to become what it is today: the de-facto medium for human communication. The internet is a better mousetrap. Before, we had snail mail, telephones, newspapers, libraries, record albums, radio, television, and movie theatres. It was Slow and it takes more time. The internet is fast, affordable, and widely available. What's more, it seems to facilitate some human desires to share, to be liked, and to be in control of our environment. The internet age is customizable, on-demand, instantaneous.
