TRANSCRIPT
International Women’s Day
The first international Women’s day was on March 11, 1911• This was a day to bring attention to the situation of women
in the workplace.• Women were paid much less than men for doing the same
work• Attempts to form unions were summarily stopped
International Women’s Day was moved to March 8 in 1913• This was done to commemorate female garment workers in
1857 who were protesting over low pay and dangerous working conditions• The police quickly broke up the protest• However, this laid the foundation for the formation of a
female garment workers union several years later which worked for higher wages and safer working conditions
In 1986, the month of March was proclaimed to be National Women’s Month• This month is marked by community events intended to
increase women’s issues and women’s role in history
What are the major issues
• The same problems that have not been solved since the 1800s.• Women make 30% less than men• And there is harassment and discrimination in the
workplace
