Creating inspiring new plants
Tradition with technology
There has been phenomenal advancements in biological science during the last few decades. But as our environment and consumer habits change, we need to keep ahead of the trends and needs of the market. Plant breeding is a key component of Whetman Plants International’s research and development process. The company, together with our sister Company Valin Genetics Ltd, invests a significant amount of resources in the in-house breeding department. Our teams are currently working on new and exciting genetics, within a variety of sciences, to produce the next generation of plants that have the best possible characteristics.
Highly skilled and dedicated breeders blend their expertise, creativity and traditional methods with sophisticated decision support software and laboratory research and development to bring award-winning plant varieties to market. With 12 products launched in the last 3 years, and many more in development, you can be assured that we will bring you the very best of our future breeding.
Market insightWe listen to you, our customers and always endeavour to meet the highest standards of plant health, cutting and young plant quality. The mother stock is tested twice yearly and inspected by FERA on a monthly basis.
Our aim is to deliver the highest quality of service you could wish for, with advice given willingly and freely. Our success in achieving this contributes to your success.
Comprehensive trials
5
We allow about 8 years for the selection process to be completed before introducing a new plant variety. During this time it will be tested for its hardiness, repeat flowering qualities, good vegetative growth, fragrance, health and vigour and as an overall good plant for the grower as well as the consumer.

Those produced in tissue culture can be shipped as stage 3 agar while our Dianthus are also available as unrooted cuttings outside the UK and some other products are bare root. We have a long established, joint venture tissue culture laboratory near Shanghai, China. 7
We have become a breeder’s agent and young plant supplier, to breeders and growers around the world. The shaded areas world map, provides an illustration of the countries where we either manage breeder portfolios, have active customers or production facilities located.
In our facility in Devon, United Kingdom, we primarily grow 3cm plugs for our UK and European customers, as well as growing on larger sizes for specific contract production, such as 9cm liners. We mainly produce specifically for customer orders, and also speculate from time to time. We follow trends and conduct market analysis, as well as having a presence at major international shows.
TC Production facilities, China. Some of our production is via micro propagation, which has the benefits of consistent quality and produces more robust plants, leading to accelerated growth, compared to similar plants produced by conventional methods.
We have a joint venture tissue culture laboratory and production facilities, located within a secure institute near Shanghai, China. This facility is a centre of excellence for research and development, as well as science, and is headed up by Dr Kumar. The institute has over 800 scientists, of which 215 hold PhD degrees.
Production facilities, China.
