You join us as we deepen our international commitment by working with the United Nations, and by embedding UN Sustainable Development Goals into our curriculum.

We’re dedicated to making your time with us happy, successful and life-changing. We’ve created a safe and inspiring 21st-century campus with excellent facilities, close to the heart of Leicester, an environment offering award-winning teaching and one where you’ll gain the skills and experiences that open up exciting life choices and career options.

Our #DMUworks programme guarantees a professional work experience opportunity for every undergraduate student, and that support is lifelong. As its name suggests, #DMUforlife also makes you part of our university family for ever, so you can continue to make friends and connections with the world through the outstanding experiences we offer outside your studies. These include community volunteering through #DMUlocal and Square Mile India, and #DMUglobal, our scheme which offers exciting and affordable overseas experiences that build confidence and character.

I urge you to jump into all these opportunities as soon as possible, along with the many clubs and societies DMU offers. Like International Welcome Week itself, all really help you feel happy in your new home. Get involved! The International Student Support Team are always on hand with friendly guidance.

Once again, a warm welcome. Enjoy DMU.

WELCOME!

JAMES GARDNERPro Vice-Chancellor for Strategic and International Partnerships

It’s my great personal pleasure to welcome you to De Montfort University Leicester (DMU), and to thank you for choosing to live and learn with us – our international students’ energy and enthusiasm help make us a truly vibrant global community.

Which sessions should I attend during International Welcome Week? Attendance is not compulsory. However, you are encouraged to go to all the information sessions, which include important details about life in the UK, as well as advice on healthcare, campus safety, opening a bank account and study skills in a UK university. Please try to arrive on time for the different sessions, so that you don’t miss important information.

We also hope you can join our trip to Warwick Castle and some of the evening social events.

Do I need to book a place on any of the events?

You don’t need to book a place for most activities. However numbers are limited for the Student Union trips and activities on Saturday 19th January and so if you’re interested in these events we recommend buying tickets promptly. Find out more at demontfortsu.com/refreshers.

Passport and visa checks

You will need to have your visa and passport checked and scanned by the Immigration Compliance Team before you can start your academic course of study. You will be able to do this during a special registration event on Sunday 20th January 2019.

This will take place from 10am and 4pm, in Room 0.02 in Queens Building.

When can I collect my Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)?

Your BRP decision letter from UK Visas and Immigration will tell you where to collect your BRP. Most students will be able to collect their Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) from DMU, and you will be able to do this during the registration event on Sunday 20th January, in Room 0.02 in Queens Building.

Other students may need to collect their BRP from the Post Office. Please contact us for more information if you need to do this. If you collect your BRP from the Post Office, the Immigration Compliance team will need to take a copy of your BRP for our records before you can register on your course. If you need to collect your BRP from the Post Office, please bring it to the Queens Building when you register on Sunday 20th January.

When do I start on my course and meet staff from my faculty?

Before you can enrol onto your course, you will need to complete online enrolment. If you haven’t had chance to do this, we’re running an online registration workshop on Thursday 17th January, where staff will be able to help you with this. See the timetable in this brochure for more information.

You will also need to have your passport and visa checked at the event on Sunday 20th January (see above).

Induction activity for your course should begin from Monday 21st January (the week after International Welcome Week) and you should receive information about this separately.

Where can I get a Welcome envelope?

We’ll give you a Welcome envelope (with maps and information, as well as a sim card) at the opening Welcome event on Tuesday. You can also pick an envelope up at the visa check event on Sunday 20th January.

Safety and Security: what happens if I have to walk home after an evening activity?

Our campus is generally very safe and you should feel comfortable in your new surroundings. Our security team will give you advice during the opening Welcome session. If you are worried about getting home after an evening activity, please talk to a member of staff and we will assist you.
