3LOCAL 101 IN REVIEW 3

THE STATUS OF UNEMPLOYMENT IN THE AREA

The work picture during the first three quarters in Local 101’s jurisdiction has been quite promising. Work continues to look promising in the last quarter of 2014 and looking ahead to 2015. To date, the hours worked in 2014 by the members of Local 101 have increased by 370,000 hours compared to the hours worked in the first three quarters of 2013. As the pipeline work in Local 101 has been slowing down, many of our members have been able to find work on one of the many heavy highway projects in our area. Private sector work, including new housing developments, has been on the rise this year and has provided steady work for our members. Another area that has provided steady work as well this year is at the General Motors Fairfax Plant, and the Ford Plant in Claycomo. As work has continued to increase over the last two years, it stands to reason that we have seen a decrease in the numbers on our “Out of Work List”.

Local 101 Branch offices in Springfield, Wichita and Topeka are all reporting a significant increase in work for 2014. This is also positive compared to some pretty grim numbers reported during the time period known as The Recession from 2008-2012. Work in Local 101’s area is good and steady, however it still does not compare with the amount of work reported in the mid to late 1990s when our economy was humming pretty good.

While searching unemployment statistics on the Bureau of Labor Statistics Website, I found the reported numbers for unemployment in both Missouri and Kansas mirrored the work flow that we have experienced in Local 101’s jurisdiction. In 2000 the Missouri unemployment rate was 3.3% and Kansas reported 3.8%. In 2005 Missouri increased to 5.4% while Kansas was up to 5.1%. In the year 2010 Missouri’s unemployment rate was at 9.3% and Kansas’ rate was 7.1%. Currently, Missouri is reporting at 6.3% and Kansas is at 4.8%. Unfortunately both numbers are higher than the 2000 statistics of 3.3% in Missouri and 3.8% in Kansas, but are heading in the right direction. With an optimistic outlook for 2015, Local 101 Members should continue to see positive work opportunities available in our area.

The Mid-Term Elections are upon us now, and will be decided about the time my article goes to print. Each Election gets more and more important, and the November 4th Election is no exception. The races on both sides of the state line are critical. The election results for Kansas has drawn national attention. Governor candidate Paul Davis is a friend to labor and is backed by both Local 101 and the AFLCIO. He has been fighting hard against incumbent Sam Brownback who is known nationally for his failed experiment that has continued to put Kansans in a deep economic hole. This failed experiment will more than likely take years to recover from. The Independent candidate Greg Orman has had a hard fight against incumbent Pat Roberts for United States Senator. This race is considered to be one of the key races in this country. The winner of this race will declare who has control of the Senate. This election could very well be a barometer for how voters feel about sticking with “status Quo”, or moving ahead. In Missouri, we will be putting people in place that will make decisions on a key issue, “Right to Work”, that will affect all the working men and women in this state. That is why your vote is crucially important.

I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Best wishes for a prosperous 2015.

Scott RettigBusiness Manager

With an optimistic outlook for 2015, Local 101 Members should continue to

see positive work opportunities available in our area.

Few investments are more important than the one you have in your retirement plan. Because the average American will rely on savings for 18 years after retirement, it is essential that you understand your rights and responsibilities under your retirement plan.

Participants in retirement plans have certain rights that are governed by Federal law. They also have responsibilities. The people who sponsor your retirement plan also have rights and responsibilities. Most are spelled out by a law called the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA).

What Is ERISA?

ERISA is a Federal law that sets minimum standards for retirement plans in private industry. For example, if your employer maintains a plan, ERISA specifies when you must be allowed to become a participant, how long you have to work before you have a vested interest, how long you can be away from your job before it might affect your benefit, and whether your spouse has a right to part of your benefit in event of your death. ERISA provisions are effective for plan years beginning on or after January 1, 1975. ERISA does not require any employer to establish a retirement plan. It only requires that those who establish plans must meet certain minimum standards. The law generally does not specify how much money a participant must be paid as a benefit.

ERISA requires plans to provide participants with information about the plan, including important information about plan features and funding. The plan must furnish some information regularly and automatically. Some is available free of charge, some is not.

ERISA sets minimum standards for participation, vesting, benefit accrual and funding. The law defines how long a person may be required to work before becoming eligible to participate in a plan, to accumulate benefits, and to have a vested right to those benefits. The law also establishes detailed funding rules that require plan sponsors to provide adequate funding for your plan.

Through the Federal Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation ERISA guarantees payment of certain benefits if a defined benefit plan is terminated.

There are two types of retirement plans: defined benefit plans and defined contribution plans. A defined benefit plan, such as Local 101’s pension plan, promises you a specified monthly benefit at retirement. A defined contribution plan does not promise you a specific amount of benefits at retirement. In these plans, you or your employer, or both contribute to your individual account,

Michael CharltonPresident

Please remember when conducting business with Local 101’s Funds Office, that our employees are there to help you while following the laws created by ERISA.

sometimes at a set rate, such as 5 percent of your earnings annually. These contributions generally are invested on your behalf. You will ultimately receive the balance in your account, which is based on contributions plus or minus investment gains or losses. The value of your account will fluctuate due to changes in the value of your investments. Examples of defined contribution plans include 401(k) plans, employee stock ownership plans, and profit-sharing plans. The general rules of ERISA apply to each of these types of plans as well.

ERISA was intended to do exactly what it says—provide employees with some retirement security. Employee pensions had very few protections under the law before ERISA. Employees might be promised a pension only to find that it was not sufficiently funded or that all or most of their benefits were lost when the plan was terminated or if the plan sponsor went bankrupt or was sold. Many plans had very long vesting schedules requiring 20 to 30 years of service. Some plans required employee service

periods to be “uninterrupted,” so that a short, involuntary leave such as a layoff or temporary disability in the middle of a 35-year career was sufficient to lose all benefits. Companies reportedly terminated employees a few months before vesting to avoid having to pay their pension benefits.

Please remember when conducting business with Local 101’s Funds Office, that our employees are there to help you while following the laws created by ERISA. The documents they request such as a birth certificate, divorce decrees, accident reports, etcetera, are all necessary documents required under the ERISA guidelines. At some point in time it might be necessary for our funds office to deny claims without the requested documents. Every employee in Local 101’s fund office is dedicated to serving you, the members and families of Local 101. Please help them serve you better by providing documents when requested, and being patient, by now knowing that they are governed by the rules of ERISA.

8 BUSINESS REPRESENTATIVES

I’m trying to figure out how to put the election segment of this article together with Nov. 4th being two + weeks away. So I guess, we’ll go with the “knowns” stating at the top we know Congress’s disapproval rating is steady at around 82%, but yet it’s theorized that most will be re-elected – How does that work? There are so many people that just vote the “R” that’s in front of a

candidate’s name rather than what that candidate has actually done for them (or in the case of our recent past – not done!)

It is amazing to me how party affiliation is the deal breaker. It should be more personal, and about things that truly affect you and yours. I look also at campaign ads (how do you not) ? There are stupid amounts of money spent on grabbing those few uninformed voters. If you’re informed, you already know who you’re voting for ! Those ads that are made to insult your intelligence, and treat you as a “mushroom”, is something you don’t want to fall into. Here’s to hoping that by the time this comes out, You have got out and voted ,and unseated a lot of “The Koch” serving dead beats, and have replaced them with folks who really care about the working class, and less about the 1%.

The 2014 Work Season has been a good one for both the Building and Heavy work. Short of winter, there is a ton of ongoing work with no slowing down in sight. The Building work has several contractors that are working at Jeffrey Energy Center. The list of contractors include: Day & Zimmerman, Enerfab, Kissick, Maxim Crane, Hamon Custodis, Wolf Construction, and Brand Scaffold. At the end of this outage, coupled with the SCR project, I believe this is the most work to ever take place in the work history of these plants.

Things are still on track for the contract awards to be made public on the NBAF project at K-State at the first

of the year. Work on the lab at this time, is scheduled to start in May. K-State also has a school of business, that is up for bid soon, that has a 48 million dollar price tag on it. We’ll hope for a fair contractor on that one as well. Lawson Steel had two active jobs in the last couple months. One being an addition on the Onaga Hospital, and still more to do on the KBI Building in Topeka. Wolf Construction is in Lawrence finishing up at their water intake job on the Kansas River. Also in Lawrence, JE Dunn has a job at the “School of Business”, and we should know who all the players are on this job in a couple weeks.

Heavy Work has been hampered with all the rain lately, and still has a lot of work to finish up. Rieke Brothers are gaining on the Menard’s Building in Lawrence. NR Hamm is on the west side of town on K-10 Highway. LG Barcus & Sons had the pipework at the VA, and are getting close to completion on the two bridges over 470 in Topeka.

Schmidtlein Excavating started work at Lauren’s Bay Subdivision in Topeka, and are also involved at the two afore mentioned bridge locations with Barcus. Schmidtlein also has work to finish at 470 and Gage, and on 46th street in North Topeka.

I want to thank the staff from our Weston Training Site for agreeing to put on a Forklift Certification Class at our regularly scheduled January 13th Meeting. If you’re certification is about ready to expire then come on by at 7:00 pm, and they will fix you up!

Congratulations to John Mc Connell who received his 65 year pin in August! Todd Royles was the winner of a 101 coat at the September Topeka Meeting.

10 BUSINESS REPRESENTATIVES

The work in my area this past year has been very good. The majority of my work has been heavy work at 75%, and the rest building work. The subdivision work is up just like it was a few years ago when we would complete one job and go to another.

Work on the K-Dot Gateway job is approximately a 6 mile square from Ridgeview to College Boulevard, then to K-10, I-435, I-35, and 69 Highway. There is work happening in every corner of this area. Clarkson Construction has 2 rigs on the new flyover bridge from K-10 East to I-435 North. Clarkson is currently working on all the columns with another rig at K-10 & Ridgeview bridges. There is also a lot of pavement tear-out and replacement on I-435 East.

The new ”City Place Development” had a ground breaking ceremony in late September, located at 69 Highway and College. This development is a 90 acre site that will include, apartments, offices, retail shops, and a senior living facility. George Shaw Construction will be doing all the street and site work for this 350 Million Dollar “Development by Block”. Shaw also started work on the new Olathe High School, and new ball fields.

Enerfab had an 8 week shut-down at the Lacygne Power Plant that started on September 29th to remove all the existing duct work, and install the new duct work. This work is all part of the new construction that has been

going on the past 3 years at this plant. The Foley Co. also had work during the shut-down, as well as AT Abatement, and AmQuip. AmQuip has both a 350 ton rig, and a 650 ton rig for Enerfab.

Pyramid Construction has on-going work at K-7 and Johnson Drive, where there will be new Townhomes. Pyramid is working on a bridge rehab just west of Paola on Peoria street. Pyramid will also be doing some bridge and header walls for Clarkson Construction at I-435 and Pflumm Road. This company just started work on the 159th Street and 69 Highway project.

Kissick Construction and O’Donnell & Sons have been moving through several sub-divisions in Overland Park, and Olathe adding new phases onto the existing additions, and is some cases starting all new additions. Kissick also has 10 miles of waterline work located in the west side of Olathe. Haupt Construction started the site work in the area of 108th and Pflumm Road. This site work is being done for a new warehouse facility. Haupt also has 5 new sub-divisions to start, also in Olathe.

J.A. Lillig has work for more new apartment buildings just west of Renner on 87th Street. Rodriguez Mechanical is doing the utilities at this time. McAnany Construction finished up the work on 7 Highway and Parker Street in Olathe, and still have on-going work on 99th street in Lenexa and on Renner Road just north of 87th Street.

Wishing Happy Holidays to you and your families. Be safe in your travels!

Redford Construction Downtown KCMO

The Streetcar Project is still the biggest thing going in the downtown Kansas City area. The streetcar project has been very good for Operating Engineers. Streetcar Constructors has 6 Operators full time. Redford Construction has between 8 to 14 Operators working, depending on the day. Kissick Construction has been working 10 to 15 Operators, also depending on the day. Realm, Rodriguez Mechanical, Comanche, Fahey Construction, George Shaw, Max Rieke, ACI Concrete, and Falcon Concrete have all had Operators drawing a paycheck as a benefit of the Streetcar Project.

Downtown Kansas City is not just the “Streetcar Project”. JE Dunn is building a 25-story apartment at 13th and Walnut. Kaw Valley Wrecking is doing the site work for a new hotel at 16th and Main. George J Shaw is doing the site work at 22nd and Charlotte for an expansion of Truman Medical Center. Fahey is rehabilitating Troost Ave. from 20th to 31st Street. Redford did the utilities on that project. Kissick Construction has a parking lot at 21st and Holmes for Truman Medical Center. JE Dunn is the Construction Manager on the Central Patrol, and Crime Lab at Prospect and 27th Street. The Subcontractors on that project are, JA Lillig, GJ Shaw, E&S Excavating, Rodriguez Mechanical, Foley Co., Building Erection, and Midland Steel.

The Midtown and Brookside Area are a buzz with Construction as well. JE Dunn has a project on the Rockhurst University Campus. RL Duncan is doing site work, Site-Rite has the Utilities, Lawson Steel is doing the steel erection. Blue Nile is wrapping up a major project separating storm and sanitary sewers in Brookside. Fahey has milled, and overlaid miles of city streets in the Brookside area.

Burns and McDonnell has started an expansion of its world headquarters on Wornall. Kissick Construction is doing the site work, and utilities. The concrete, and steel package have not been awarded at the writing of this article.

Superior Bowen has overlaid Interstate-435 north & southbound from the Missouri River to Interstate 29 at Platte City. Ideker has overlaid Interstate 35 north & southbound from Parvin Road to Vivion Road. Leavenworth Excavating added the acceleration lanes on this project. Superior Bowen and Ideker have both had city overlay projects.

Foley Co. has a project on the Turkey Creek sewer interceptor in the west bottoms. CBS Piling has a major part in the excavation.

Clarkson Construction continues work on the Manchester Bridge project on Interstate I-70, with approximately 10 to 15 Operating Engineers.

At the time of writing this article American Bridge has not started the replacement of the US 69 river bridge connecting Riverside Missouri and Kansas City Kansas Fairfax District, but should be started by the time this newsletter comes out.

So if your family or friends are inconvenienced, just tell them progress is often inconvenient, but it’s a money maker for you, your brothers and sisters.

All and all it has been a good year for the men and women of Local 101, and I would like to thank every one of you for your skills, and dedication to your craft.

Have the best of holidays !

GET INVOLVED!

While I am writing this article, the November Elections will soon be upon us. I am sure that all of you have been informed of the importance of this particular election. As you read my article the elections will have come and gone. The new or incumbent officials will soon be settling into office. Undoubtedly, not everyone you voted for will be elected into office. Did my vote really matter? Did I do enough to help my candidate get elected? As you will see in my article, I will explain the ways to truly help your candidate get elected, and that your vote does count.

The key to getting your candidate into office is to volunteer some of your free time. A group of people get together and make calls to the public regarding your candidate, (this is called a phone bank). A Phone Bank is a great way to contact and gauge the support of the candidates in your area. You will be provided with a script to read that you can receive from the candidates campaign office, that will give you the questionnaire to read to the listener about your candidate.

There is a scale to rate your candidate during the call from 1 to 5. One being the person strongly endorses the candidate, and five being the person strongly opposes the candidate. With these answers the candidate can then find the areas that need stronger positive campaigning.

Another way to support your candidate is to participate in “canvassing”, or walking. This walk is done with a large group of like-minded people in a specific voting jurisdiction. You will use the same reading materials that are used in the phone bank. You present those same questions by going door to door, face to face and discuss your candidate in a pleasant manner.

Both of these methods are very effective to spread the good word about the candidate or candidates you have chosen to vote for. The most important aspect of the phone bank or the walk is to GET INVOLVED. This investment of your time can produce extraordinary results.

Remember, when choosing a candidate, look for one that will support your way of living as a union worker. This is not only important to you, but your community as well.

WORK SAFE, and GET INVOLVED!

Did my vote really matter? Did I do enough to help my

candidate get elected?

Heavy work in my area has been real good. The pipework, concrete, and overlay work in Wyandotte, Johnson, and Leavenworth counties has kept several Operators busy this year.

The bridge work in these same counties has been quite promising, with the Building work at a steady pace. Work at GM (General Motors), has employed many Operating Engineers this year.

It would be nice to see some big crane jobs come up in the future in my area.

Kaw Valley has had a productive year with excavation, and recycling work. Some of this work was at 107th and Nall, and on Fairfax Trafficway and River City Drive. Kaw also had some dirt and demo work at Kindleberger Road, and Fiberglass Road along with excavation and recycling work near the Fairfax District. Lastly, Kaw is excavating for a warehouse that will be at Woodend Road, and South 96th Street, which is located directly north of Kaw Valley Sand & Gravel.

Wiedenmann Inc. has been working in Wyandotte County doing storm and sewer repairs at Southwest Boulevard, and 10th Street, and also on 13th Street and Merriam Lane. Wiedenmann also had work on Leavenworth Road and 123rd Street, K-32 Highway, and south 59th Street.

Rodriguez Mechanical has been installing waterline at 18th Street and Shawnee Drive. They also made a run of waterline on 55th Street, north of Leavenworth Road towards the Nearman Power Plant. Rodriguez also repaired waterline on 18th Street between Taurome Avenue, and Orville Avenue in Wyandotte County.

Site Rite Construction has been busy with pipe work at 107th and Nall, and have work at 90th and Parallel Parkway just north of Providence Hospital, which will be a new Assisted Living Facility. Kidwell Construction has been moving dirt at K-32 Highway and 65th Street. This will be the location of J.E. Dunn Constructions new warehouse. Kidwell has also been moving dirt at 37th and State Line Road, which will eventually be for parking. Leavenworth Excavating has also been moving dirt at J.E. Dunn’s new warehouse location. The majority of Leavenworth Excavating work has been on 73 Highway, from 20th Street in Leavenworth to the Leavenworth-Atchison county line.

J.M. Fahey’s milling and asphalt work has been at Lee Boulevard, and 83rd Street. Fahey has also milled and paved on 77th Street south of Parallel Parkway. Fahey’s concrete crew did a stretch of Kansas Avenue from 34th Street to 39th Street. While J.E. Dunn’s new warehouse is just getting started, Dunn and R.L. Duncan are putting the final touches on the jobsite at 47th and State Line Road. George Shaw and J.E. Dunn both have on-going work at the Overland Park Regional Hospital.

With the help of our members, and their families at the voting polls, I am hoping for an outcome that will continue to have people in office that will push to add work for our members. I would like to thank all of our members and their families that took the time and exercised their right to vote.

Keep up the good work!

While writing this article, we are not to election day yet! My hopes are that by the time you read my article and the election has come and gone, that the right people were voted into office. Local 101’s Officers, Business Agents, and members fought hard to keep “Right to Work” out of Missouri. Unfortunately this is an issue that will be brought up again. By having the right people voted in office to fight “Right to Work” will hopefully give us the advantage we need to keep “Right to Work” out of Missouri.

In my area of work George Shaw Construction has two jobs located on Botts Road & Highway 150. Shaw is doing the grading work on one of these jobs, and the sub-contractors on the other job are: Central Plumbing, Lawson Steel, and Fenix Construction. Shaw also has a job on Raytown Road at KCPL preparing a new training site for them. George Shaw also has on-going work at Unilever, and Fed-Ex on Highway 210.

Phillips Hardy Construction is cutting in some new streets in Belton on Markey Parkway, and are putting in the utilities and building pads. Ideker Construction is finishing up a project on Highway 210 putting in cross-overs and doing the final grade work. Phillips Construction is working on the railroad bridge with anticipation of being open to traffic by December. Phillips is also finishing up their work on the 39th Street project.

Blue Nile Contractors are working on two water lines, one on Eastwood Trafficway, and one on Eastern Avenue in Liberty. Blue Nile also has up-coming work

on another water line job in Martin City. Amino Brothers are adding a turn lane and a round-about on Woods Chapel and Walnut Street in Blue Springs. Lico Steel has the iron work at both the Blue Springs Police Station, and at Liberty North High School just off of Highway AA. Larry Brown Excavating is finishing up a subdivision at Amber Lakes, and at a warehouse in Heartland Meadows. Pyramid Contractors just picked up a job on 291 Highway adding a frontage road and bridge at the Courtney Ridge Landfill, while also having on-going work on a railroad bridge in Lee’s Summit.

Redford Construction has on-going work in Creekmore, and more work coming up in Harrisonville. J.E. Dunn Construction will be working on the first two phases of the new Cerner Building, and put the dirt work for bid in October. This job has long been anticipated and we are extremely happy to have the work at this location. Pyramid Construction is close to completion with the Rock Creek job, and still has some work to complete in Sugar Creek.

Radmacher Excavating is still working at the Waste Water Treatment Plant on Raytown Road, and are moving along rather quickly on Strother Road. Radmacher also picked up a new job on Lee’s Summit Road from Highway 40 to Gregory Road, which will eventually meet Strother Road. Haupt Construction is working on a job in Grandview for Burns & McDonnell doing the building pads, site work, and the access road.

As we now enter the final quarter of 2014, the mid-term elections are just days away. There is generally not as much participation in these as in the general elections. We need to make sure every member of our household that is eligible to vote does so. It may not seem like it, but usually every item on the ballot has an effect on our livelihood in one way or another.

The International has listed their Pipeline Training schedule on their website. You can view this at www.iuoe.org. If you are a skilled journeyman and are interested in attending any of these classes, please call the hall for an application.

The work in our area is currently being plagued by lots of rain this fall. Foley Company is expecting to start on the pump station work they were awarded earlier this year. Phillips-Hardy is trying to finish up the bridge projects in the area. L.G. Barcus is driving piling on a sewer project in the bottoms. Gann Backhoe Service is battling the weather on several jobs they have started. Kissick Construction has ongoing work. Rodriguez Mechanical had a few projects in the area. Foltz Welding and Accurate Underground are finishing a directional drill for the Buckeye Pipeline near Gower, Missouri. Rodenberg Diversified has a few small projects for different pipeline companies scattered across our jurisdiction. Price Gregory has a small crew back at the Humboldt station for some modifications. U.S. Pipeline has two crews working on the “punchlist” items to finish up the Flanagan South Pipeline project.

The Spreads 3 crew has started near Warrensburg, Missouri working south and the Spread 4 crew started in Cushing, Oklahoma and is headed north. Michels Corporation is doing the same “punchlist” work on Spread 2. They are also taking care of some modifications to the pump stations they built on this pipeline.

The proposed Mill Creek Wind Farm in Holt County has been cancelled according to Element Power. According to news releases, there was concern the wind farm would have a negative impact the migratory birds and bats in the area. There is a chance Element Power may build in a different location, but no details were mentioned. There are a few jobs yet to bid this year for MoDot. There is more work that needs to be done, but without funding some of these will have to wait.

There are several Local 101 members working on pipelines out of the jurisdiction of Local 101. These members need to monitor your Pension and H&W fringes. The pipeline contractor automatically sends your contributions to the International when you are outside of your home local. You must fill out a transfer authorization form to have these moved back home. If you have filled out the transfer authorization in the past, you may not have to do it again but please review your benefit statements to make sure that any appropriate transfer has occurred. You can call the following phone numbers to obtain these forms or call the Health & Welfare Office in Kansas City.

As I write this final article for 2014, it is looking more like fall every day. Looking back on this year, I am pleased to say, it has been a really good year for Operating Engineers in our area.

APAC has been busy working on various projects. They have been doing a lot of work in Joplin including milling and resurfacing I-44, and Rangeline Road. They are also laying the last layer of finish lift at the new Mercy Hospital. They have been in Springfield widening South Campbell, and redoing the intersection at Plainview Road. They have also been working in downtown Springfield on the square. On the last letting, APAC was awarded a total of 91 miles of overlay and shoulder widening in Vernon, Newton, Dallas, Polk and Greene Counties.

Journagan Construction has also been busy on various projects, including the widening and overlay on Highway 32 between Long Lane and Lebanon. They have also been working on the new interchange at Glenstone and Independence in Springfield.

The shut-down at the Asbury Power Plant should be complete by November 5th. Alberici Construction should be entirely finished with this project by mid-December. This 2-year project has gone very smoothly with no accidents.

Snyder Construction has been doing various building pads in and around Joplin. They have also been moving utility, widening, adding new storm drain and curb and gutter to 26th street in Joplin. APAC will be coming through and paving it.

L. Krupp Construction has been working on various bridges in our area including the new bridge on I-44 and MM Highway in Springfield.

Pace Construction is still working on the new lane additions on the bridge South of Evans Road on 65 Highway in Springfield.

National Steel is still at Cox Hospital in Springfield hanging iron. They also have the awning work and the penthouse work on the hospital.

Prestressed Casting has been really busy putting up FEMA storm shelters all over our area.

Phillips Hardy Inc. has been awarded the bridge on I-49 in Vernon County.

All in all 2014 has been a good year. I would like to thank all of our members for their hard work and dedication to this local.

I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday season.

Well winter has arrived again. It was a wet Fall, and a lot of the work has been slow to finish. Overall the “Out of Work” List stayed pretty light. We had a few decent MoDOT jobs this year, and some good building jobs also. Of course the highway work is limited due to MoDot’s lack of funding. Hopefully in the near future the state of Missouri can figure out a way to entice the tax payers to vote on a funding bill. The roads and bridges aren’t going to fix themselves and you can’t outsource infrastructure jobs.

Work in the Sedalia area is pretty good when the weather allows. Ideker is finishing up the Sedalia Airport. Journagan finished up the shoulder widening on 65 Highway south of Preston in Hickory County. Irvinbilt is working on the waste water treatment plant for the city of Clinton. George J Shaw did some curb and concrete work for the new addition for Golden Valley Hospital also in Clinton. Doherty Steel & Belger Cartage are hanging the iron for the new dorms at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg. U.S. Pipeline is finishing up the punch list for the Flanagan South Pipeline Project for Enbridge. Environmental Specialist Inc. was awarded about 2 miles of new levee along the Missouri river in the Waverly area. They are going to use the material from the back water pool that is supposed to support fish breeding.

If you want to do some pipeline training you can go to www.iuoe.org and either log in or register to log in and

look, download and print the 2014-15 Pipeline Training Schedule. Review the schedule and then decide if the International has a class that is suitable for you. If you don’t want to travel abroad or if pipeline work isn’t your thing, you can always call one of Local 101’s Training Sites to either polish up on old skills, or go to learn some new ones. The professional staff will do everything they can to accommodate you and get you ready to get back to work. They can also help with CDL A Training, Forklift Certification, Hand Signal & Rigging, OSHA 30, and many more of the things that will make you more versatile for our contractors.

The Sedalia Meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month at 7:00 pm except for in January, there is no meeting. There is also no meeting if the date falls on a recognized holiday. Please join me at our meetings because I would enjoy having you.

Wishing everyone a happy, and safe holiday season

The Election will be over by the time this article is printed. I hope the Koch Brothers weren’t able to influence the Kansas Voters, and that the results were positive for the Candidates that Local 101 supported.

We have been fortunate to have amazing weather so far this fall, which has allowed the work to keep going full speed. Let’s hope it will continue and the work stays steady!

Empire District Electric Company at Riverton is starting an expansion with the installation of Unit 12 Project. Snyder Construction has completed their portion of the project and Foley Company is close to completion of their portion of this project. AZCO is working on the mechanical side of this job. Sterrett Crane will be doing the heavy lifts because they have a SL 4500, 450-ton Kabelco Crane, CC 2800 on site. Sterrett Crane is also off loading modules at the railyard at the Atech Steel site in Baxter Springs, Kansas, and are transporting them to Riverton by Goldhofer Trailers. Marley Cooling Tower (MCT) will start on the cooling tower in November.

At the NCRA Refinery in McPherson, Kansas are: Piping & Equipment, Deep South Crane, Barnhart Crane, Belger Cartage, and Bennett Steel who are all working on the plant expansion.

Deep South Crane, Barnhart Crane and Belger Cartage all have cranes working two shifts on the Holly Frontier Refinery Shutdown in El Dorado, Kansas. Logan & Company is working two shifts at the Refinery in Coffeyville. Barnhart Crane & Rigging have five cranes set up and are working at the OneOK Plant. Piping & Equipment and Belger are working on the expansion of the OneOK Plant in Hutchinson.

Congratulations to John Carter, and Clarence Tibbits who received their 40-Year Gold Card, Service Pin, and Watch. LeeAnn Parker was the drawing winner at the September Meeting, and Hayden Ward was the drawing winner at the October Meeting! Thanks for attending!

Just a reminder for any Stationary Engineers wanting to test for their Class A OPERATING ENGINEER’s license, with the Kansas City Codes Administration. The city is using the INTERNATIONAL CODE COUNCIL (ICC) as their testing contractor. You will need two reference letters from your current or past employer’s (on letterhead), to make application. Your application must state that you have operated boilers and chillers safely for 3 plus years. The International Code Council recently updated its book list to include the newer versions of a couple of books that you will need in order to take the exams for your Operating Engineer’s Certificate. Those books are now the 2012 versions of International Mechanical Codes, and the International Fuel Gas Code. Anyone who wants the updated revisions , please call me, and I will be happy to send you the latest information in that regard.

Contract negotiations with Research Medical Center concluded with the membership approving a new three year agreement. Up next, I have sent the opening letters, and will begin negotiating a new Agreement with ST. JOSEPH MEDICAL CENTER. I expect the Engineers and the Hospital will go for another 3 year contract as last time. I also have both TRUMAN MEDICAL CENTERS (Hospital Hill) and (Lakewood) to negotiate for completion of the 2014 calendar year.

Our condolences go out to the family on the passing of Brother Joseph Spohn. Joseph worked for Saint Joseph Medical Center for 5 years , and will be duly missed by everyone!

Congratulations to the following members who recently received their service pins: October Retiree, Patrick Royalty 55 year pin; Jeffery Park 25 years of service at P1 (St Luke’s), David McAllister for his 20 years of service at Research Medical Center. November includes George Cleveland for his 30 years of service, who is also with P1(St Luke’s). December includes Michael Breier for his 30 years of service at Honeywell.

See you at the monthly Union meeting on the 3rd Thursday of every month or soon at your workplace.

In closing, I want to wish each member and their families a Happy Thanksgiving, and a Merry Christmas Season!!!

A 40 year gold card and congratulations go out to Lonnie McNeece at Dairi Concepts in El Dorado Springs Missouri! And 25 year pins and congratulations go out to Mike Richie at Nestle Purina in St. Joseph, Missouri and Daryl Potts at Preston Refrigeration in Kansas City Missouri!

St. Joseph Missouri’s Nestle Purina contract expires December 7, 2014 and negotiations are underway. Chief Production Steward Mike Rich, Chief Maintenance Steward Mike Walters, Production Steward CarolAnn Hays, and Warehouse Steward Al Anders, are on our negotiating team. Meanwhile, Mike Rich and Ed Fisher cook up a variety of food at work in exchange for donations. Most recently the menu was chili dogs. There were at least half dozen cookers full of hot dogs and chili. All of the donations go toward their UCP fundraiser at the annual chili cook off held in March each year.

Also in St. Joseph Missouri following Nestle Purina negotiations will be Hillshire Brands contract negotiations. Or, I should be saying Tyson Foods. Hillshire became Tyson in September 2014 but currently is still being identified as Hillshire Brands. Only a few changes have been made by Tyson so far but I’m sure there will be more to come.

Dairi Concepts in El Dorado Springs, Missouri have been using robotics technology for a while now. Pictured is their much needed robot that places bags on pallets to be shipped. Up until this robot, the palletizing had all been done by hand (and back and shoulders and legs). That hand palletizing continues on other lines. Maybe with the success of this robot, there will be more to come?

Congratulations to David Zachery who retired after thirty years with Jackson County. That leaves us with only four Operating Engineers working at the County. These Engineers take care of the Kansas City Courthouse, Independence Courthouse, The Old Courthouse on the Square in Independence, The Old Examiner Building, The Tech Center, The Arts Building, The Election Board, The Election Board Warehouse, The Dog Shelter, Fort Osage, Grain Valley Public Works, and Plowing Snow on eight lots.

Look for the BlueLine Rentals sign on Front Street in Kansas City Missouri. As equipment comes in, Engineers are making sure the equipment has the BlueLine decal on before it goes back out.

Engineers at J&L Drywall in St. Joseph, Missouri are staying busy. Good for them that they are hauling dry wall almost to Iowa at times.

It looks like Tower Properties in Kansas City, Missouri are about ready to hire an apprentice. Looking ahead to who and how many may be retiring they’ve decided they better get one hired. They have been very successful with training their own.

CONGRATULATIONS to those celebrating retirement! For those out on sick leave recovering from illness or injury, we wish you a full and speedy recovery! Work and drive safe. Have a wonderful holiday!

34 APPRENTICE TRAINING

We are glad to announce the acquisition of a 2011 International truck at Weston for CDL Training. It is a great addition, and we want to thank the Local 101 Trustees for allowing me to purchase it. The new addition of this truck will enhance our CDL Training.

We are getting ready to put in a new computer lab in Weston. This new computer will do CBT testing for the OECP written exams, both recertification’s and initial testing. You must have a current application on file, and call the OECP Office. They will handle the process from there. It will be offered the first and third Mondays of each month.

OECP has also entered into an agreement with Comira. This is an online testing company that will do on demand written testing. It is the same procedure as CBT. You must have a current application on file, and call OECP Office. This office will direct you to the closest testing lab.
