Business Manager

Our Annual Dinner Dance in April was one of the largest gatherings of Local 30 members and their families that we’ve seen at any union event. Each year our Dinner Dance is getting bigger and better. This year we had our General President James Callahan celebrating alongside over thirteen hundred Local 30 members.

It’s worth noting that as this event has grown significantly during the last five years, it’s become more difficult to find a space that will hold us. We’ve outgrown most venues and it’s our goal to outgrow all of them because that means the entire Local 30 family is united and together for one night. Thank you to all of the members who joined us in April. We have already started planning for next year’s event.

Earlier this year at one of our general membership meetings we swore in our 5,000th member of the IUOE Local 30. When I joined Local 30 and started working at a waste-to-energy plant on Long Island, we had somewhere near 2,500 members in the union. As a lead organizer, I was focused on making Local 30 a bigger and stronger union, and together we accomplished that. As Business Manager, I have remained committed to that goal and since 2014, we have grown by more than 30% mostly through organizing campaigns.

Almost every written word about the labor movement today is focused on its decline. I simply refuse to accept that our union will lose anything, especially membership. All of our organizers and business representatives are dedicated to continued growth and relentlessly taking on employers who refuse to respect their workers’ rights to join our union. Local 30 members have been the engine that drives our organizing campaigns by connecting with non-union engineers throughout New york and Connecticut, together taking on these fights. That’s why we are winning organizing campaigns in every corner of our jurisdiction. I’m proud that we have 5,000 members today, but we aren’t done. The march to create family-sustaining careers for our membership keeps going.

In May we held our internal union elections and I was re-elected to serve as your Business Manager and Financial Secretary along with my team for another term. General President Callahan attended the meeting and spoke directly to the room full of Local 30 members about how proud he is of our Local before he swore us in. It was a special night for our union.

Local 30 has given me everything I have. As a young apprentice, the union gave me the most important thing every young person needs – hope for the future. We don’t live in an era where working hard is enough anymore; we need each other to make sure that working hard leads to a career that includes security, the benefits families rely on, wages that grow instead of shrink or disappear, and respect at work. That’s the promise that our union makes to every Local 30 member and every young apprentice, and that’s a promise that I will fight to keep.

I want to thank all of you for continuing to trust me and my team to keep this commitment and to lead our union. It is an honor to represent you and your families at every meeting, picket line, demonstration, and ceremony that I attend.

Since taking office, Business Manager William Lynn has prioritized modernizing Local 30’s information systems and technology. In only a few years, the union has updated its internal data systems, research capabilities for organizing and contract campaigns, as well as Local 30’s presence on social media including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

In May, Local 30 launched our new website – www.iuoelocal30.org. The new website is dynamic and provides members with important updates, information regarding benefits, organizing, the apprenticeship program, and contacts where members can reach out to our Local either by phone or through a form that gets emailed directly to the union. The new website also links to the union’s social media accounts, thereby allowing every Local 30 member to see what the union is posting on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

Business Manager Lynn wanted the local’s online face to highlight the critical infrastructure work that Local 30 members do every day. The first thing you see on the website is a video of the iconic structures and landscapes that define New york and Connecticut and that our members power and maintain, including the Statue of Liberty, yankee Stadium, Stamford’s business area, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Empire State Building. Our message is that while it’s tough to find Local 30 members because we’re in the boiler rooms and mechanical

rooms, it’s impossible to ignore the famous structures that we keep running because they help define our region’s culture.

The website is full of pictures of Local 30 members at work. Under the “Join Us” page, which serves as our organizing portal, are photos of a recent protest in upstate New york and organizing victory in Cromwell, Connecticut. The Apprenticeship and Training page has photos of Local 30 apprentices at the union hall and on a field trip to CitiField. The Benefits Fund page — where benefits updates are posted and frequently asked questions are answered — has photos of Local 30 members on their jobsites. From the landing page to the contact page, the new website focuses on keeping Local 30 members informed and highlighting the work that union members perform every day.

After the recent launch of the new website, Business Manager Lynn said, “I want to make sure that all Local 30 members have access to the information they need regarding our union, whether it’s updated benefits information or news regarding an upcoming protest.” This newly constructed website meets that need and will be successful in keeping each member updated.

William Lynn and the Pro-Union Slate were re-elected to another term leading Local 30 at the May 14th General Membership meeting in Whitestone, New york. A standing-room-only crowd of Local 30 members applauded as it was announced that Lynn and his team were unopposed in this year’s election and thus would continue to lead the union. Local 30’s internal democratic elections are overseen by a committee of Local 30 members elected by the general membership as well as a neutral election service that is responsible for ensuring all nominations and votes follow the union’s constitution and bylaws.

International labor leader and General President of the International Union of Operating Engineers, James T. Callahan, attended the meeting in Whitestone. Following the culmination of the election process, General President Callahan swore in Business Manager Lynn, who is also an International Trustee, and all elected representatives of the Local as they raised their right hands while reciting their oaths of fidelity to the union.

Callahan then spoke directly to Local 30 members as he congratulated Business Manager Lynn and the Local’s leadership on the progress the union has made during the last several years, noting specifically the growth in membership, stability, and improvements in benefit funds, dedication to training and leadership on the issues that matter to all operating engineers. He pledged the International’s continued support of Local 30 and congratulated members on re-electing Lynn because of his dedication to members and their families, and his record of achievements as the Local’s Business Manager.

Lynn thanked the General President for his leadership on the International level and commented that every member of the IUOE should be proud to have him as General President. Lynn continued to say that it’s an honor for the Local to have the General President in the home that Local 30 members built and protect. Lynn then said that as an International Trustee, he sees firsthand the tireless work that the General President does for every member and is proud to serve the International under his leadership.

Standing in front of the membership Lynn said, “Our Local has given me everything I have and I’m determined to make sure that our Local continues to give every member the family-sustaining careers that we deserve. When I started my career as an engineer, we had 2,500

members and today we are at 5,000 members. That’s because we fight every day to protect our members and all engineers who want to join our union. We win together and our unity is our power. Tomorrow the fight continues and with the support of our 5,000 members, we will overcome any challenge.”

Since William Lynn’s first election to Business Manager and Financial Secretary in 2014, Local 30 has increased membership by more than 30%. The union has gained a reputation of relentless organizing campaigns that have brought members into the union in industries like power generation, higher education, municipal agencies, commercial facilities, gaming, and others that the union focuses on. Local 30 has also increased the intensity of actions during contract campaigns by protesting for better contracts at sites including Long Island University, Sarah Lawrence College, Jericho Plaza, Fairfield University, PS1 MoMA, and many others. Lynn has been elected to key positions in important labor organizations and committees, like the Long Island Federation of Labor, the New york City Municipal Labor Council, Westchester-Putnam AFL-CIO, the Nassau Suffolk Building Trades, James Connolly Irish American Labor Coalition, New york State Public Employee Conference, Climate Jobs New york, and others. His presence and leadership with these committees has given Local 30 an influential political and organizational voice on issues that matter to Local 30 members and their families, including municipal contracts, benefits, and projects in the emerging clean energy economy for example. In addition, Lynn has been elected to important IUOE committees like the IUOE New york City Coalition, the IUOE New york State Conference and, as previously mentioned, was elected to the office of International Trustee for the IUOE in 2017.

Closing his remarks that night Lynn said, with the intensity in his voice rising, “We have made it clear to every employer who tries to discourage their workers from joining us through intimidation or tries to take away hard earned wages and benefits from Local 30 members in contract negotiations, that while they may have the larger bank accounts, we have each other, and together we can win any fight.”

Hundreds gathered on may 28th at Russo’s on the Bay to celebrate the 2019

Local 30 Apprentice Training graduating class. Fifty students received their

diplomas from Business manager William Lynn and Director of Apprenticeship

and Training Patrick Lynn, as well as gift bags provided by milwaukee Tools

filled with various tools to start them off. As the only state-certified apprentice

training program, Local 30’s graduates attend three years of instruction,

complete with in-class, hands-on experience, as well as on-the-job training.

Apprentice Graduation

As the graduates came up one by one to accept their diplomas from Business Manager Lynn and take a photo with their families and President Moccio, the excitement for the future was palpable. These students worked hard and have learned trade skills they will use to build a career. Applying the experiences and the knowledge they have acquired in the course of their training, the 2019 class will continue to grow our Local and keep our industry strong for years to come.

While addressing family, friends, representatives from sister locals, and additional well wishers, Business Manager Lynn said that the graduation is one of his favorite nights because everyone who works as hard as these students do deserves acknowledgement of their efforts and to let loose. Business Manager Lynn said, “These engineers you see before you have worked hard on the job and in the classroom. They have volunteered, helped out, and supported our Local and I know that going forward, they will continue to do so and they will continue to make us proud. Local 30 has the best trained engineers in the field and these graduates join those ranks”.

RETIREE summer kickoff luncheon

More than 70 retirees and their spouses attended the first Retiree Summer Kickoff Luncheon on June 7th. When this group gets together and shares stories about their work in the trade and their history in the union, it’s a special occasion. Business Manager Lynn said, “It is important that we remember the past and honor those who worked hard to lay the foundation of this great local. We work hard every day to ensure our retirees are able to enjoy a dignified retirement. It is always great to spend time talking with everyone in attendance about the way things were and the work we are doing now to make the union stronger every day.”

Members of Local 30’s staff and Business Representatives were on hand to answer any questions and to spend time with retirees. Chief Fund Officer Michael Spillane, and Darren Turton and Donna Owens of the Benefits Fund, conducted the raffle and each attendee received a gift bag containing several small gifts from our vendors as well as a Local 30 umbrella. A nice lunch was enjoyed by all and everyone is looking forward to the next luncheon traditionally held in December.

The 119th IUOE Local 30 Dinner Dance was held on April 12th at Manhattan’s Grand Hyatt. The annual affair raises resources for the Engineers Charitable Trust, which awards academic scholarships to children and grandchildren of eligible Local 30 members every year. The Dinner Dance also celebrates the achievements of the union and is a night for Local 30 members from all over the region to spend time together, share stories, and catch up.

The Grand Hyatt is one of Manhattan’s classic venues for large gatherings, but even the Hyatt could barely hold the more than 1,300 attendees this year. Tables stretched from wall to wall, leaving room for only the band and the dance floor. This event has grown significantly in the last five years and is expected to continue to grow as more and more workers join the union.

Special guests of the evening were the winners of the 2019 Scholarships. It was an important moment when four of the five winners stood on the dance floor and were recognized for their scholastic and extracurricular achievements. We are proud that the IUOE Local 30 community supports one another and it was gratifying to show the next generation the people they have behind them.

The NyPD Emerald Society Pipe and Drum Band opened the night with a stirring performance. In addition to hundreds of Local 30 members, families, and friends, also attending were prominent New york City labor leaders, community leaders, and elected officials. IUOE General President James T. Callahan attended this year’s dinner dance as well, which highlighted the International’s support of Local 30. Callahan then addressed the overflowing crowd before Business Manager Lynn gave his remarks.

Lynn said, “Every year this event gets bigger, a sign that our Local is strong and united. I’m not sure how much longer the Hyatt is going to be able to hold us, but we will test the facility’s capacity as we’ve been trained to do. This night is always about our family, our unity, and our perseverance.”

The band took over from there, as did the celebrating.

2019BiKe run

united we ride — sPring editionThe IUOE Local 30 Spring Bike Run rolled out the warm morning of Saturday, May 18th. Nearly 40 Local 30 members met at the union hall and mapped out their run to the 440 Line in New Fairfield, Connecticut. The route took riders north via the Palisades Parkway where they pulled over to take a break and a photo near the cliffs overlooking New york City. From there, Local 30 stickers could be seen on helmets and bikes on highways and roads all the way to Connecticut.

Once at the 440 Line, a local restaurant that has become a favorite for the Local 30 crew on two wheels, riders had lunch and spent an afternoon talking shop, wheels, and planning for the next ride in a few short months. Everyone took advantage of the nice weather to spend time relaxing by the fire pit outside the restaurant before each rider took to the road on their own journey home.

The next Local 30 Bike Run will be coming up in the fall and is anticipated to be just as enjoyable as the Spring Run, especially with the added benefit of the fall foliage to enjoy. Any Local 30 member interested in joining the crew should keep checking the Local 30 website and social media for upcoming events.

Earlier this year, the IUOE Local 30 reached a milestone by surpassing the 5,000 member threshold. Organizing has been a priority for Business Manager Lynn since taking office in 2014. Local 30 membership has steadily increased year after year under the guidance of Lynn and the commitment of every Local 30 member. Over the last five years Local 30 has grown by more than 30%.

Local 30 members lead all of our organizing and contract campaigns by bringing workers together, sharing their experiences being members of this union, and showing up to the fight when it’s necessary on picket lines, leafleting, bannering actions, and all other demonstrations. The Local’s impressive growth can be attributed to the commitment of Local 30 members.

Recent organizing victories in Cromwell, Connecticut, Westchester, and Long Island, New york, have helped push our membership number higher

in the last couple of months. We ran several successful campaigns in the last year that brought in large groups of members and have inspired other workers to reach out. Every Local 30 member is a representative of our union and is an important part of the organizing process.

While we continue to negotiate industry-leading agreements with our existing jobsites, we also focus on growing our membership that leads to an even stronger voice at the table and an even larger support system for our Local 30 family.

Business Manager Lynn said, “Each member is an important part of the team and brings their own strength to our mission — providing family- sustaining careers for our members, futures for our children, and a dignified retirement for all our members.”

We are well on our way to our next goal of 6,000 members and beyond.

5000 Members Strong!
