Meet theOur International Study Centre has a dedicated team of highly skilled tutors. With many years’ worth of diverse experience, from working in labs and management roles to teaching English abroad, their role is to support you on your journey through the ISC to your chosen degree at LJMU.

“The most satisfying aspect of my job is seeing the students successfully progress to university and graduate. Studying the ISC is an excellent preparation for higher education in the UK. Our programmes allow the student to be in a centre that is extremely supportive, aiding them in becoming familiar with UK education system and the type of things they’re going to be doing at the University. We are constantly commended on our pastoral and academic support of students. We’re very proud of that.”

Jan O’Driscoll LJMU International Study Centre Head of Centre

“ I have an undergraduate degree in Social Sciences, a teaching qualification, and a Masters in Applied Linguistics. I’ve been teaching for seven years. The way that we teach here is what we call the ‘communicative approach’ to language teaching. There are certain strategies that we use in the classroom to get the students to communicate and use language. One of the key things we do is try to get students to think critically because that’s key to going into academia. The ISC is an extremely enabling environment because we have an open door policy where students can come and speak to teachers at any time.”

Corina Doran Head of English

“ I have a BSc and PhD in Physics. I’ve studied the PGCE as well. I worked in industry and a lab and did research. I wanted a new challenge so I’ve got into teaching. I’ve been teaching for three years and find it really enjoyable. My typical lesson usually has a little bit of theory followed by practice questions. Sometimes we go to the IT room where we can do activities and online experiments. We also sometimes go to the labs at the University.” Dr Mark Watts Physics and Maths teacher

“ I have an MSc in Science Communication in addition to all my teaching qualifications. I’ve been teaching since 2001.

The most satisfying aspect of my job is watching students grow. They are nervous, anxious and not confident in their own abilities at the beginning, but by the end of the year they are ready to move on to study at LJMU.” Deb Crawley Chemistry and Maths teacher

“Studying here is different to back home. There are fewer exams and lots to do socially – so I have to be very mindful to concentrate on my studies. Outside of studying, I play badminton and have joined the Break Dancing Club at the Students’ Union. I also enjoy partying with my new mix of friends who include Arabic, English and Swiss students.”Coralie, France International Foundation Year Business, Law and Social Studies

In addition, you will develop analytical skills necessary for problem-solving in the world of engineering. Engineering MathematicsYou will be provided with an introduction to a computer algebra system as a learning tool for basic algebraic techniques. You will be taken through a revision of elementary coordinate geometry, trigonometry and complex numbers. The module provides a foundation in engineering mathematics for students in mechanical and electrical engineering. Specialised software will support the delivery of this module.

Electrical Engineering modules Electrical EngineeringYou will develop intellectual ability in selecting and applying appropriate circuit analysis techniques. This will comprise analysing circuits that include both passive and active electronic components. You will also gain an understanding of the physical principles of electrical and electronic systems. The module aims to introduce operating principles of transformers and electronic filters. Digital and Analogue Electronics, Microprocessors and SoftwareYou will be provided with an introduction to transistors and the small-signal equivalent circuits. You will also look at the use of operational amplifiers and the operation of combinational and sequential digital logic circuits. The module offers a basic foundation for the understanding of programming constructs and object orientation. You will develop an ability to analyse and model systems and create databases and programmes for specific model application. Introduction to Telecommunication SystemsYou will learn how to describe the basic principles of communications systems and investigate communications situations. You will be taught how to understand the basic principles of networking and investigate networking situations.

Electrical Engineering Practice 1You will enhance your knowledge and understanding of electrical and electronic circuits by completing a set of practical experiments. The module allows you to gain experience in the practical design of electronic circuits including prototyping and PCB design and manufacture. In addition, you will develop professional practical skills to undertake experimental laboratory work, to test design ideas in laboratories or through simulation, and to analyse and critically evaluate technical issues. Engineering PrinciplesYou will be provided with a good appreciation of the mechanical properties and behaviours that influence electrical systems, and be introduced to how parameters are measured. You will be taught how to appropriately use basic measurement principles and data treatment. The module will enable you to describe mechanical parameters such as heat, temperature, stress and strain, and design basic measurement systems for key mechanical parameters.

International Year OneEngineering

Applied Mechanics, Materials and ManufactureYou will learn to apply the principles of work, energy, power, impulse and momentum to the solution of engineering problems. The module teaches you to use the principles of equilibrium to analyse coplanar static force systems. You will also learn to apply the concepts of stress and strain to simple engineering problems involving axial, shear, flexural and torsional loading. To support these applications you will review the range of available materials and processing methods and demonstrate knowledge of the basic structures of different groups of materials. Thermodynamics and Fluid MechanicsYou will be taught how to apply the laws of thermodynamics to open and closed systems, and how to analyse heat and work transfers during thermodynamic processes and cycles. You will also analyse hydrostatics and fluid flow, and apply the governing equations of fluid dynamics for simplified flow.
