ENJOY THE LIFESTYLE OF BARRIE AND REGION

The City of Barrie, located on the shores of Lake Simcoe, is surrounded by rich natural scenery, including sandy beaches, scenic hills and ecological parks. The Barrie area is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the province of Ontario.

Within 45 minutes driving distance of Toronto, and with a considerably lower cost of living, Barrie is the perfect place for international students to experience cultural immersion and to find opportunities for professional career development in a friendly Canadian community.

Barrie is Toronto’s playground, where getaway weekends and great shopping are just the beginning. It offers everything the big city has to offer but in a smaller, greener, safer, and more peaceful environment.

International students have the opportunity to live in a truly Canadian setting, with the opportunity for the best integration possible with Canadian students.

Barrie has a vibrant nightlife with numerous dining options, bars, restaurants and discos. The city also offers art festivals, music, world cuisine, parks, museums, art galleries, ecotourism, sports and various waterfront activities.

ADDITIONAL CAMPUS LOCATIONS

Barrie is one of seven Georgian College campuses – others are located in Midland, Muskoka, Orangeville, Orillia, Owen Sound and South Georgian Bay. Every Georgian College campus offers an educational experience in a uniquely Canadian setting. The Owen Sound Campus, for instance, provides a range of full-time programs and is especially renowned for its world-class marine engineering and technology programs. The Orillia Campus is home to human service and community safety programs, among others.

WORK OPPORTUNITIESYes! International students can legally work in Canada. International students with a valid study permit enrolled in a co-op or internship program must apply for a work permit to be able to legally work off-campus during their co-op terms. Since each co-op semester may involve a different employer, the work permit will have conditions stating that Georgian College is the employer and Georgian decides where the student can legally work for the co-op or internship placement. This permit only allows students to work off-campus in positions related to their co-op requirements. Students must have the co-op work permit before they can begin work.

Students with a study permit for a program that leads to a degree, diploma or certificate that is at least six months in duration will be allowed to work up to 20 hours per week, on or off campus:

• during regular academic sessions and

• full-time during scheduled breaks, such as the winter and summer holidays or spring break.

To qualify, you must:

• have a valid study permit

• be a full-time student

• be studying in an academic, vocational or professional training program

• This option is NOT available to English as a Second Language or English for Academic Purpose students.

Foreign health care students can complete their clinic internships in Canada without a work permit if the work is for the primary purpose of acquiring training – a normal practicum should last four months or less.

Off-campus work: For details visit www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/study-changes.asp

After graduation, International students are eligible to apply for a one or three-year post-graduate work permit. This allows you to gain Canadian work experience. This type of work is exempt from HRSDC approval. Students must have a valid study permit and apply within 90 days of graduation (the date the your final marks are posted).

Students’ Administrative Council (SAC)The Students’ Administrative Council works to enhance your student experience as well as to support you when you need it. Representing all Georgian College students, each campus has a SAC made up of student representatives who are elected annually. In Barrie, SAC oversees the athletic facilities, orientation, The Last Class Bar and Grill and The First Class Café. SAC also supports movie nights, lectures, concerts, winter carnival week, trips, pub nights and more!

HOMESTAYThe Georgian College International Homestay program provides exciting opportunities. Students can experience a Canadian lifestyle and establish relationships within the community. Our Homestay program provides safe, caring and interactive hosts with whom international students can improve their language skills and cultural awareness.

Homestay hosts provide necessary household items, including a furnished bedroom for the student. Most homes are located close to public transport or within walking distance of the campus.

FULL HOMESTAY

The host provides a variety of nutritional, well-balanced meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) every day – including weekends.

SHARED HOMESTAY

The student shares the kitchen with the Homestay host. The student buys, prepares and cleans up after his or her own meals. The Homestay host helps the student become familiar with the kitchen, explaining use of equipment, where to find grocery stores and cooking supplies.

“ My career goal is to be a professional researcher in marketing. I want to work in either the client side or supplier site. Right now, I am doing an internship in research and insight at MediaCom, which is one of world’s leading media agencies.

Through this internship, I have been able to really strengthen my analytical skills in a short period. At the same time, I am gaining exposure to real-world markets so that I have the opportunity to understand how business operates in this industry.

Doing an internship like this gives me a chance to participate in real projects and turn my theoretical knowledge into practice.”

Ethan Zhao

“ I want to work in the golf industry. I’m crazy about sports. Perhaps one day, when I get enough experience, I hope to be able to be a golf director or general manager at a golf course.

I chose to study in Canada because of the culture, and the opportunity to seriously improve my language skills. I chose Georgian because of the safe location, nice facilities, top ranking golf program and awesome badminton team.

The services at Georgian have really made a difference for me. My spoken communication skills in English have really improved. I’ve really enjoyed the school trips run by the International Centre. Teachers for the golf program and international centre staff have helped me a great deal.”

Marina Pereira Ricardo

“ I started a Product Design program in Brazil in 2008, and then got a full scholarship to study Interior Design at Georgian. The program was really intense, but complete. It gave me a good sense of how challenging my work life would be.

After a year and a half of studying at Georgian, I went back to Brazil to finish my original studies. Now I’m working to launch my own product design company – MaricDesign.

Everything at Georgian was really amazing.

My experience was really special, because I left my country, family and friends to go to another place, with another language, and somehow I still felt like home. It was an amazing time, and I met so many amazing people!”

Abdulkader Ghourab

“ I’m from Saudi Arabia and have studied English all my life – my family wanted me to get a Canadian passport to create more opportunities for me. I have two aunts living in Barrie and my cousins recommended Georgian, so when it came to postsecondary studies, I chose to come here.

When I started, my spoken English was good, but my writing needed work. English for Academic Purposes (EAP) at Georgian helped me overcome that challenge. They’re ready to support any student facing problems. If you need one-on-one time with teachers, they’re more than willing to help.

Now that I’m in the Mechanical Engineering Technology program, it’s good that the Math Centre is available to us as well.

So far, my experience has been great. It’s a powerful college, with everything you need to succeed.”

Chris Jiang

“ I chose to study in Canada because the country has a strong reputation for multiculturalism and a highly developed education system. I also spoke with friends who had graduated from Georgian College and I had a good feeling about it.

I love my study and work environment in Barrie, the amazing view, the healthy lifestyle, the nice way people treat each other and many multicultural events.

The teachers are great; everyone here tries their best to show me how to study well, and the education system is awesome. Once I understood how to handle it, I felt no pressure at all. At the same time, many teachers and staff keep their eyes open and let me know about any opportunities for volunteering or part-time jobs. This has really made my life easier.

I appreciate everything that I have experienced in Canada so far. But I am especially glad to have an on-campus job in The Last Class student lounge. After two rounds of group interviews, I was the only one from my country to be hired as part of this 50-person team. I am so proud! I enjoy the way we treat each other; it’s like a family, I feel I’m not here working – I am here truly enjoying life!”

Tsai-Tung Chen

“ I chose to study in Canada, coming from Taiwan, because I heard it was a beautiful country and it had a good atmosphere for learning English. When I searched for a college through the Internet, I saw that Georgian College has many interesting programs, especially my dream program – Interior Design.

I like living in Barrie because people here are very friendly and they help each other when people need assistance. There are many activities in summer and when it snows, the scenery is so quiet and beautiful.

Georgian has a Write On Centre that can help students enhance their writing skills. When I had some assignments that I needed advice about, I got all the help I needed.

I aspire to have a creative career that is filled with many challenges. When people do love their work, they bring a lot of enthusiasm to their job and work to fulfill their potential. That’s what I wish for. ”

Yang Yang

“ I chose Georgian because it has a large campus, great infrastructure and lab/computer equipment. Many programs have co-op work terms which is very essential for international students, as they are able to gain Canadian work experience.

I am in the Mechanical Engineering Technology program; the courses are designed to accommodate current industry needs. The professors are very knowledgeable and have good industrial experience; with their help and guidance I was able to get a Georgian scholarship award.

I enjoy the co-op semesters, it is a very unique and practical way of learning; the courses we study in classrooms are applied in real work situations in the industry.

After graduation I would like to find a full-time engineering job in a multi-national manufacturing company which also has a base in China.”

THE GEORGIAN COLLEGE ADVANTAGE

Co-operative education and other work experience are key components of many of our diploma and degree programsCo-op programs allow students to gain paid work experience in their professional field during their studies.

For example, a two-year diploma program might look like this:

Students enrolled in our co-op programs and who meet academic requirements alternate PAID work terms with semesters of academic study.

Most co-ops are full-time and paid; you can earn between $6,000 and $8,000 in each co-op semester.

Our international co-op office team will assist in helping you develop your resumé and improving your interview skills for your job search.

In addition to opportunities for work during your studies, qualifying students holding a graduate diploma from a program of two years or more can remain in Canada on a work permit for up to three years.

Double your credentials with a diploma and a degree!Articulation and transfer agreements allow Georgian College graduates to enter a program at another institution using transfer credits. Currently, 98 per cent of Georgian College programs offer at least one pathway option. In total, Georgian programs offer 500 such opportunities with 47 institutions in Ontario, Canada and around the world. For current details, visit our Credit Transfer Centre website at GeorgianCollege.ca/admissions/credit-transfer .

Many employers prefer to hire graduates who hold a diploma as well as a degree – not only because such graduates have two credentials but also because they have obtained hands-on work experience through co-op terms.

University Partnership Centre –it’s one of a kindAt Georgian’s University Partnership Centre, we understand the world is changing. We also know that students like you are looking for increasingly flexible options.

That’s why we provide our own career-focused degrees with work placements; offer hundreds of transfer options with institutions from around the world; and partner with universities to deliver undergraduate and graduate degree programs at our campuses.

Every year, we work to create even more degree options. No matter what your academic or career goals are, Georgian has what you need to accelerate your learning and your future...
