OPT workshops for our undergraduate and graduate students. All of our OPT workshops will take place at the SISS

Non-Resident Tuition Fees (NRTF)

Amandeep Kaur, a F-1 international graduate student in Physics, is working on the Chancellor’s Graduate and Pro-

fessional Student’s Advisory Board (CGPSA). She plans to address some of the issues that international graduate

students are facing, paying particular attention to the high non-resident tuition fees (NRTF), and she is looking to

increase the amount of TA/GSR and external fellowships offered. SISS encourages you to look at the NRT/Funding

Petition and support your fellow international graduate students by signing this petition to help alleviate the effect

of NRT and to receive more funding opportunities. Your voice matters and so far she has received over 200 signa-

tures, but to really make an impact, she will need more signatures, please feel free to sign the petition here:https://

This story was submitted by Ahao Jian, he is a undergraduate student majoring in Economics:

I am one international student from China and I did a great job during the first quarter of my first

year as a college student. During last winter quarter, the second quarter, desiring to graduate earlier

and to be freer after graduating from college, I registered 28.5 credits, maximum credits that I could

do in UC-Davis, which was crazy and seemed unachievable for anyone, but I did it. Undoubtedly, I

failed and received one warning message from the College of L&S by e-mail which was dreadful and left me with

great pressure. In the end, I went to meet academic adviser, deciding to correct what I did wrong over last winter

quarter after talking to her.

I am still alive. Now, as one sophomore student here, I just want to give new students to UC-Davis one suggestion to students that they should be prepared for a new quarter and to not do crazy things.

The Global Ambassadors, the first cohort of amazing 24 domestic and international students, have finished their quarter-long class on intercultural leadership. As mentors, each ambassador has a genuine commitment to serving as a social con-nection, a resource to academic services and a cultural interpreter so that interna-tional students will hopefully better adapt to academic life in the U.S. Mentors will also receive internship cred-it and a transcript notation for their par-ticipation. In January, they will welcome their mentees at a social event the first week and meet with them on a regular basis throughout the quarter. If you are interested in applying to this program, please contact Moira: [email protected] and she will send you information in early January. Inter-national experience is NOT required and we are looking for both international and domestic students with a strong commitment to service as well as a true interest in learning about different cultures. Global Ambassadors will hold

information sessions on the program during the first two weeks of winter quarter. Applications are due January 25.

Sacramento Ballet Presents: "The Nutcracker" December 7-23 The Sacramento Ballet's annual presentation of "The Nutcracker" begins on Dec. 7. Best-known and most beloved of all Sacramento Ballet productions, Ron Cunningham’s The Nut-cracker has been seen by hundreds of thousands of people. The images of young Clara battling the Giant Mouse King, being saved by her Nutcracker Prince, and then journeying to the magical Snowflake Forest and Kingdom of the Sweets have become a part of our culture. Joining the professional company in this annual production are more than 500 youngsters from throughout the region who take their first “leap” into the world of performing arts with the Sacramento Bal-let, making it a true holiday spectacular. For more information, call the box office at (916)808- 5181. Visit www.sacballet.org for more information on the Sac-ramento Ballet company and more 2012-2013 season offerings. Jelly Belly Factory, Fairfield, CA.

This fun factory is just 30 minutes away from Davis. Did you know that it takes more than a week to make a single jelly bean? Visit the Jelly Belly factory to see just how those sweet little treats are made. Take in all of the sights and smells of this colorful candy factory. During the 40-minute tour, see how Jelly Belly confects 150 flavors of jelly beans using massive sifting machines and conveyors. Learn about the nuances of jelly bean manufacturing. The fac-tory doesn’t run on weekends, although tours are still held via video as you walk through the factory. No reserva-tions are required and the tours are all FREE! This is a great day-trip idea for a rainy winter day.

Grab a bag of “Belly flops”, the oops Jelly Bellies that are packaged in two-pound bags at a great deal of $7 or so. Stop by the Thompson Candy Company, near the entrance to the Jelly Belly factory, and have a quick tour of choco-late-making and some yummy samples. They offer great deals on bags of chocolate as well.
