It’s best to visit any private accommodation in person to make sure it suits your needs before signing a rental agreement.

HOMESTAYStay with a friendly Australian family and get to know how locals live. The host Australian family will provide you with your own fully furnished bedroom, a quiet place to study and cooked meals. Homestays are provided through three University-approved agencies that carefully select suitable hosts.

We offer courses and degrees that are interdisciplinary, but we also give you the option to undertake a double degree in either a complementary, or completely different, area of study.

DOUBLE DEGREESDouble degrees increase your career flexibility and enrich your studies as they are structured to allow different areas of knowledge to feed into each other. They also fast-track your study – you usually complete double degrees one or even two years faster than you would consecutive single degrees.

Macquarie offers double degrees across a wide range of fields, meaning that you can combine almost any areas of study such as commerce with engineering, environment with law, or actuarial studies with science.

By undertaking a double degree, you can feed your curiosity, look at things from multiple perspectives and challenge the norm – all while gaining a high-quality qualification.

UNDERGRADUATE MAJORSOur undergraduate courses and degrees – both single and double – are structured in two ways. Some of our courses require that you follow a specific sequence of units that must be completed in order to graduate. Others allow you to choose from a wide range of majors, which represent a particular focus for your study. These majors are known as qualifying majors as they meet all of the course’s requirements.

We offer more than 100 majors that will broaden your studies and help you develop industry-specific skills, with majors ranging from anthropology and climate science to economics, international communication, marketing, politics and software engineering.

The flexibility doesn’t end there. In addition to completing the required qualifying major for a course, you may also be able to undertake a second, or double, major from an approved set of majors offered across the University.

When choosing your major, or combination of majors, it’s best that you speak with an academic adviser to make sure the study program you choose meets all of the requirements for graduation.

PATHWAY TO PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION

Nuclear medicine is a branch of medical imaging that uses small amounts of radioactive compounds, known as radiopharmaceuticals, to diagnose and provide therapy to patients. Radiopharmaceutical practitioners are responsible for creating the radiopharmaceuticals used in nuclear medicine. The practice of nuclear medicine detects functional abnormalities in heart disease; many cancers; gastrointestinal, endocrine and neurological disorders; as well as many others within the body. It enables the visualisation of chemistry in vivo, as it is happening.

This course – developed in collaboration with professional radiopharmaceutical scientists – will provide you with the knowledge and skills required for a rewarding career in the field of diagnostic and therapeutic medicine.

PROFESSIONAL ACCREDITATION AND CLINICAL EXPERIENCE

Speech pathologists work with individuals across the life span. They have a particular focus on helping children aged 0–5 who have developmental speech and language difficulties; provide specialist support to school-aged children and adolescents with language, learning, and reading difficulties; implement rehabilitation programs with adults who have had a brain injury; support children and adults with complex medical, developmental and acquired conditions such as autism, cleft palate and dementia with their communication and swallowing; and work with a variety of professionals in optimising their voice and vocal skills.

Regarded by the Australian Council of Learned Academies (ACOLA) as the most innovative research pathway model, the Master of Research (MRes) prepares you to complete a PhD in three years – well short of the national average.

PROGRAM STRUCTUREThe two-year course is available in all of Macquarie’s research areas, and, subject to academic approval, allows you to construct a course relevant to your specific interests.

In the first year, you’ll undertake advanced coursework units, while during the second year you’ll specialise in research preparation and focus on a specific research topic. You are required to submit a thesis of 20,000 words for completion.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTSThis course requires a bachelor degree from a recognised institution with a credit average or equivalent (65 per cent) in your final year (or 300-level), although some disciplines may have extra admission requirements.

If you hold an honours or masters degree, you may apply for recognition of prior learning of up to 32 credit points (the equivalent of Year 1). What does it all mean?GLOSSARY OF TERMS

ATARThe Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is calculated by the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) and helps universities determine who receives a place in a course. Not to be confused with a mark, it is a score between 0 and 99.95 that ranks you against your peers.

COURSEA course, also called a degree, is the award you receive when you successfully complete a specified number of credit points as determined by the University. Some courses, such as the Bachelor of Applied Finance, are made up of a specific sequence of units that must be completed in order to graduate. Other courses, such as the Bachelor of Science, allow you to choose from a wide range of majors.

CREDIT POINTOne undergraduate unit of study at Macquarie is worth three credit points. A full-time undergraduate study load is four subjects or 12 credit points per session (eight subjects or 24 credit points per year), with an average three-year degree equivalent to 69 credit points (eg B Arts, B Commerce) or 72 credit points (B Media). One postgraduate unit of study is four credit points. A full-time study load is four subjects per session, with the average postgraduate degree eqivalent to 64 credit points or two years of study.

CRICOSThe Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) allows providers to offer courses to students studying in Australia on student visas.

DOUBLE DEGREEA double degree allows you to study across two complementary, or completely different, areas of study. Double degrees increase your career flexibility and can be completed faster than two consecutive degrees.

GPA

A grade point average (GPA) calculates the overall grade of a student based on units completed at Macquarie.

IELTSThe International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is an English language test. IELTS test scores are one form of evidence of English language proficiency accepted by Macquarie.

MAJOR AND SPECIALISATIONMajors (undergraduate) and specialisations (postgraduate) are particular areas of study that you focus on within your course. For example, the Bachelor of Arts offers more than 50 majors and the Master of Commerce offers eight specialisations. Majors and specialisations are made up of structured sequences of units.

MINORMinors are made up of fewer credit points than a major. They allow you to study two complementary, or different areas, that interest you.

PACE

PACE (Professional and Community Engagement) units include internships, special projects and domestic or overseas travel experiences.

POSTGRADUATE A course of academic study higher than a bachelor degree.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL)Your prior learning, both formal and informal, can be assessed for admission and credit towards your Macquarie University degree. Remember to ask for RPL when you apply.

SESSIONA session is a period of study, just like a school term. Some universities call them semesters. At Macquarie, we have three sessions: Session 1 runs between February and June, and Session 2 runs between August and November. Session 3 is optional and intensive. It runs between December and February and can fast-track your course.

STUDENT VISA An authorisation permitting people to come to Australia for the primary purpose of studying, as defined by Migration Act 1958

UNDERGRADUATEA course of academic study for a bachelor degree is regarded as an undergraduate course.

UNITUnits are what we call subjects. Most full-time students take four units – each worth a fixed number of credit points – per session.

HOW DO I APPLY TO STUDY AT MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY?

The quickest way to apply to study at Macquarie is to use our Online Application Manager at admissions.mq.edu.au

HOW DO I APPLY FOR A MACQUARIE SCHOLARSHIP?

We offer a wide range of scholarships for international students. If you would like to apply for a scholarship, you must first submit an application for the course you want to study.

When we receive your completed application we will issue you with a Macquarie Student Number, which is required for you to apply for any scholarship.

It's important to know that while you can apply for a scholarship once you have your student number, it won't be evaluated until you have received a full or packaged offer from us.

WHAT IS THE COST OF LIVING IN AUSTRALIA?

WHEN ARE THE APPLICATION DEADLINES AND WHEN DO CLASSES START?

For most courses there are no specific application deadlines; however, we recommend international students submit their application at least three months before the session commences. This will ensure there is sufficient time for the Admissions team to assess your application (typically five to 10 days) and, if successful, for you to accept your offer, apply for a student visa and make travel arrangements.

Some courses do have specific application deadlines, which are noted in the 'How to Apply' section of the relevant course information page.
