OPERATING since 1990, Kate Cowhig InternationalRecruitment (KCIR) spe-cialise in the direct placementof all healthcare personal inIreland, the UK, the MiddleEast, Australia and NewZealand. KCIR is an approvedagency of the Department ofHealth, a key asset importantto international clients.

New Irish graduatesneeded in the UKRight now, if you are a newlyqualified nurse, you can escapethe cutbacks and hiring freezein the HSE by starting yourcareer at an NHS hospital inthe UK. There are immediatevacancies for newly qualifiedand experienced nurses withNHS hospitals in London,Bath, Oxford and elsewhere.

“We have great relationshipswith large NHS hospitals tofacilitate these candidates inorientating them and givingthem the opportunity to gointo the specialties of theirchoice,” says Kate Cowhig. “It’salso very important to us thatcandidates are able to accesspostgraduate training, and allour current hospitals providethis opportunity.”

Kate, herself a RegisteredGeneral & IntellectualDisability Nurse, has followed

the path she now recom-mends for Irish nurses today, moving to the UK to beginher career and postgraduatetraining in the 1980s.

The benefits KCIR offerto candidates include:• Full-time permanent posts• Interviews in Dublin by

hospital personnel• KCIR will manage the

administration process onyour behalf

• Preparation for interview• Ensuring there is

accommodation arrangedfor you in the UK

• You can travel with yourfriends

• Work in a large NHS trust orin the private sector

New graduates are under-standably anxious about leav-ing home and disappointedthat they have been unable tofind work in Ireland. Butthere are great full-time jobsavailable if you are preparedto make the move.

KCIR will look after youfrom your initial interview allthe way through. All the hos-pitals KCIR work with pro-vide full induction and orien-tation and the company has a24-hour phone line open tohelp you with any concernsafter your placement.

“There is no need for doomand gloom at all,” says Kate.Even though there may be ahire freeze in Ireland, there is aglobal shortage of nurses. “Nomedical person need ever beout of work if they’re preparedto move where the job is.”

For the first time in14 years, emigra-tion from Irelandhas exceededimmigration intothe country. A

recent Central StatisticsOffice (CSO) report showedthat outward migration hashit a 20-year high, with65,100 emigrating in the 12months to April 2009, a riseof 40 per cent on the previ-ous year. New college gradu-ates in particular are nowlooking abroad for employ-ment opportunities as theIrish economy remains stag-nant. What’s more, the trendis set to continue as othercountries recover more rap-idly from the global econom-ic crisis.

Now more than ever peo-ple are considering their nextcareer move and what theyhope to be doing in futureyears. We live in an interna-tional economy – with newtechnologies and global linksmaking the world more inte-grated every day – and sopursuing a career outsideIreland no longer has to rep-resent a permanent move or

separation from home. Forthose having difficulty find-ing employment in Ireland, with the public servicerecruitment embargo and astruggling private sector, looking overseas is the logi-cal next step. Even for thosewho are in secure employ-ment, a job in another coun-try or on another continentcan represent an excitingpersonal opportunity or pro-fessional challenge.

The recent CSO studyshowed that the UK is againbecoming the first port of callfor many Irish emigrants. Inthe 12 months to April, thenumber of people whomoved from Ireland to theUK (12,000) was almost dou-ble that of the number whowent to other westernEuropean countries (6,600),and more than treble thenumber emigrating to theUnited States (3,700). It isunderstandable why this isthe case – Britain is only a45-minute flight away fromthese shores and culturallyvery similar to Ireland. Thenumber of opportunitiesavailable far exceeds those

available here, especiallyin public sector areas likehealthcare. Nurses of allkinds are neededthroughout the NHS andthere are also opportuni-ties for other healthcareprofessionals.

If you would like totravel further afield, there are also manyexciting employmentopportunities availablecurrently throughoutEurope, New Zealand,Australia, the MiddleEast, the USA andCanada, and elsewhere.

Once you’ve decided tolook for work abroad, thereare a number of experiencedrecruitment firms out therewho will work on your behalfto find stimulating andrewarding employment foryou in your chosen field andlocation, as well as ensurethat the transition to yournew job is as smooth as pos-sible. We highlight some ofthose firms below.
