In response to the Covid-19 pandemic,
the annual Hunter Valley stallion parades
in August will operate differently this
year, moving towards a similar format to
the open house setup seen at Newmarket and
in Kentucky.
The Hunter Thoroughbred Breeders
Association (HTBA) yesterday announced the
change in format from the traditional one-
and two-day parades to a six-day open house
arrangement, taking place between Tuesday,
August 18 and Sunday, August 23.
In a statement to ANZ Bloodstock News
yesterday, the HTBA confirmed that its
committee had come to a collective decision
to try the new format “as a result of Covid-19
and the continuing requirements for social
distancing”, with the visits “to be conducted in
strict adherence to any government health and
safety restrictions that are in place at the time”.
“Each year the dates typically stretch out over
a four-day weekend due to the number of studs.
Extending the dates will also be of great economic
benefit to the rural community,” the HTBA said in
a statement to ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday.
“Parade week is an important annual event
for the Hunter Valley and sees a large influx of
visitors each year. Our leading stallion farms
have together shown great initiative by allowing
breeders the continued opportunity to visit these
wonderful properties and see their impressive
array of stallions. Continued on page 2>>

“We hope that breeders from around
the country can safely and responsibly travel to the Hunter in August and
enjoy these open days.”
The HTBA committee brings
together some of the leading
industry representatives from
a number of top farms. Among
them is Vinery Stud’s bloodstock
manager Adam White, who said
that the farms wanted to ensure
that they could continue to hold
stallion parades while adhering
to strict protocols in an uncertain
environment.
“It was more the stallion farms
that took the approach as we have
to be very mindful of the times we
are currently living in and ensure
not to take any unnecessary risks,”
White told ANZ Bloodstock News
yesterday.
“We all felt we could host
people over the course of the week
which will allow us to keep to the social distancing requirements in place
as well as being able to spend more time with breeders to discuss their
plans for not only the upcoming season but also the seasons ahead. From
a HTBA point of view, we certainly felt it was the right decision for this
year.”
White believes that, although the old format will be missed from a
social perspective, it also allows the farms to engage with breeders on a
more meaningful and intimate level.

“We always enjoy the open day
weekend as we know how much people love to come to these spectacular
farms and see the stallions,” he said. “It is a very social time and the
old format will be missed this season but we also see it as an excellent
opportunity for people to get closer to the horses and ask more questions
which will assist them to achieve what they are striving for as breeders.
“It also gives us an opportunity to learn more about their mares, which
will help us direct them to the stallion we feel will complement the mare
the most from both a physical and pedigree aspect.”
The new format links the three centres of thoroughbred breeding
excellence - the Hunter Valley, Kentucky and Newmarket - in that they
will all employ this open house setting in 2020. White believes that the
demonstration will work just as well down under.
“I have been to Kentucky during their sale season and visited
numerous farms at the time to see the stallions,” he recalled. “It was about
ten years ago now. I did get a lot of enjoyment from seeing horses such as
A P Indy up close and personal as well as meeting a wide range of people
connected to the farms.”
One of the highlights of any stallion parade season is the opportunity
to see some of the new arrivals, merely a week before they serve their first
mares.
That will be the case again in 2020, with the likes of Brutal (O’Reilly),
Cosmic Force (Deep Field) and Tassort (Brazen Beau) at Newgate; Calyx
(Kingman), Magna Grecia (Invincible Spirit) and Yes Yes Yes (Rubick)
at Coolmore, Castelvecchio (Dundeel) at Arrowfield; Microphone
(Exceed And Excel) and Too
Darn Hot (Dubawi) at Darley;
Pierata (Pierro) at Aquis, Unite
And Conquer (Hinchinbrook) at
Kingstar and Zousain (Zoustar) at
Widden on show.
Vinery will also be one of
the popular destinations during
the open house period in that
area, with their ranks bolstered
by leading three-year-old
Exceedance (Exceed And Excel).
He has already been highly sought
after by breeders in the weeks
since his retirement, according to
White.
“He has settled in really well,” White said. “It is easy for me to say but
he does look tremendous at the moment. We have had a lot of people
come to see him already and they have all been very taken with him and
most booked on the spot. You know you have a quality horse when farms
like Yarraman, Corumbene, Edinburgh Park and Sledmere book after
seeing him. Getting the support from these types of farms is so important
for the horse’s future.”
For now, White and the Vinery team - like the other Hunter farms - are
slowly gearing up for the breeding season, which is now only a couple of
months away.
“We have a great team of people who work extremely hard to have
everything spot on for these days,” White said. “Office staff, gardeners,
farmers, stallion handlers, other horse staff all do their bit to put it all
together. Everyone takes pride in what they do and we all get a big thrill to
see how much people really enjoy the show.”
And while, at this stage, the format is only in place for the upcoming
breeding season, the HTBA says it will review the success of the new-style
parades to determine whether it may continue with them going forward.
“Each year the format is reviewed and will always continue to be reviewed
in the future,” the HTBA said. “Covid-19 has seen evolution and changes to
many industries, the studs will review this new format post the parades.”

Three for Newnham in The RosesWith no Queensland Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) this
winter, Mark Newnham has had to make The
Roses (Gr 2, 1800m) in Brisbane the target for
some of his stable's up-and-coming fillies.
Newnham is planning to have three runners
in the feature for fillies at Eagle Farm, with
Celestial Falls (Hinchinbrook) already in
Brisbane after finishing a close second in the
Pam O'Neill Stakes (Listed, 1600m) last start.
Money Magic (So You Think) is set to head north
later this week to race on a seven-day back-up
after finishing second to Lando Bay (Sebring)
over 1800 metres at Randwick on Saturday,
while Newnham is also sending last-start
Newcastle runner-up Soul Purpose (Pierro)
that way. "For Celestial Falls and Money Magic
it has certainly been on their radar for quite a
while," Newnham said. "Money Magic had a
summer campaign and then I put her away
with this carnival in mind. But this is the grand
final now."
Scenic Warrior lands maiden winThe Hawkes Racing team is likely to turn its
attention to spring with rising three-year-old
Scenic Warrior (Proisir) after the colt took out
the Iron Jack Maiden Plate (1200m) at Warwick
Farm in his second start yesterday. Scenic
Warrior had finished fifth in a Canterbury
maiden on debut late last month and this time
raced outside the leader before edging clear
in the straight in heavy conditions to score
by three-quarters of a length. "He's a really
nice horse going forward," co-trainer Michael
Hawkes told Sky Thoroughbred Central
yesterday. "He was probably a little bit stiff at
Canterbury. He drew a bad barrier and had to
go too far back but he really hit the line solidly.
Today, Warwick Farm, he jumped out and
travelled pretty well and he got away with a win.
He'll more than likely head to the paddock and
he'll come back a really nice horse later on in
the spring."
Silhouette emerges from the shadowsThe James Cummings-trained Silhouette
(Teofilo) broke through at her third start
yesterday at Warwick Farm, sprinting
between runners in the straight under Jason
Collett before going on to score the Sky
Racing Active Plate (1200m) by a length and
a quarter. "Last start not a lot worked out for
her," stable representative Darren Beadman
said yesterday. "She jumped inwards and
the jockey didn't have much control of her.
She's very light in the mouth. James brought
her back to 1200 metres today, with a bit
more speed on and Jason (Collett) was able
to ride her with nice soft hands. It was good
to see her slice through them like a hot knife
through butter."
Waller saves Winx relation for another dayCovent Garden (Exceed And Excel), a two-
year-old half-sister to Winx (Street Cry), was
scratched from the Sky Racing Active Plate
at Warwick Farm yesterday. She was entered
to make her debut over 1200 metres but the
Chris Waller-trained filly was withdrawn on
race morning. Instead, Covent Garden is an
acceptor for an 1100-metre maiden race for
two-year-olds at Canterbury tomorrow. She
is among seven unraced juveniles in a field
of 10 for the Harry Angel @ Darley Handicap.
Waller has also entered Covent Garden for
a possible home track debut at Rosehill on
Saturday.
Derby consolation for StockmanThe disappointment of missing out on a
Brisbane winter carnival opportunity has been
emphasised for a second time in as many starts
for staying prospect Stockman (Tavistock).
Rated a genuine Queensland Derby (Gr 1,
2400m) chance, Stockman had to settle for a
win in the TAB Handicap (2100m) at Warwick
Farm yesterday. Joe Pride said he had Derby
ambitions for Stockman well before the three-
year-old announced his arrival with a Randwick
win last month. "If there was a Queensland
Derby this year, I'd said I would love to be in it
but it wasn't to be," Pride said. "But we might
make up for that somewhere down the track, I
think."
Missile Stakes switches to set weights and penaltiesA new-season race that has been a traditional
spring starting point for many of Sydney's
best sprinters will figure in a switch of
handicapping conditions. The Missile Stakes
(Gr 2, 1200m) will be run as a set-weights
with penalties event for the first time this
year. Since becoming part of the Sydney
racing calendar in 1978, the Missile Stakes
had been decided at weight-for-age, an elite
scale of handicapping used around the world.
Sometimes held in late July but mostly run
in August, the first month of the Australian
racing season, the Missile has forged a
reputation as a sneak preview for the spring's
major races.

Hyeronimus and Paine face stewardsGroup 1-winning jockey Adam Hyeronimus is
facing multiple charges over betting offences.
Hyeronimus has been hit with 32 charges
after a long-running Racing NSW stewards'
investigation. He will face an inquiry on
Thursday and Friday when stewards will
allege the jockey had an interest in 29 bets
on horses he wasn't riding between June 22,
2016 and January 21, 2019. The charges also
include Hyeronimus having an interest in a
$500 bet on Lucky Meteor (Northern Meteor),
a horse he rode in a race at Canterbury on
November 5, 2016. A further charge alleges
Hyeronimus had an interest in a $500 bet
on another of his mounts, Limbo Soul (I Am
Invincible), in a race at Rosehill on February
22, 2017. Lucky Meteor finished third while
Limbo Soul was successful, firming from $4
to start a $3.20 favourite to make a winning
debut.
Opacity to have short break before springJohn O'Shea has opted not to press on
further into winter with promising gelding
Opacity (Ocean Park). Opacity continued a
rise through the grades with a narrow win
at Randwick on Saturday in the third start of
his campaign, taking his overall record to five
wins from seven starts. Immediately after the
race O'Shea mentioned Opacity could back
up this Saturday in a bid to further boost
his rating, but the stable has announced the
rising four-year-old will instead be sent for
a short break. "He's pulled up great and will
head to paddock for a short break ahead of
a spring campaign," the O'Shea stable said.
The Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) and $7.5
million Golden Eagle (1500m) have been
mentioned among the spring options for the
rising four-year-old.
Moroney’s spring hopefuls set to return
With clarity over the spring carnival programs,
Mike Moroney is getting his stable's leading
prospects back to work including Cups contender
Aktau (Teofilo) and The Everest (1200m) hopeful
Tofane (Ocean Park). The imported Aktau
already has a Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) ballot
exemption courtesy of his win in the Mornington
Cup (Listed, 2400m) in March and Moroney
hopes he can be a lightweight chance. "We had
this time in mind for them to return but the one
that changed a bit was Aktau, just depending
on when the Caulfield Cup was on," Moroney
said. While CF Orr Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner
Alabama Express (Redoute’s Choice) has been
retired to stud, the Moroney stable's other Group
1 winner this season, Tofane, will be chasing more
feature spring success. "We're going to try to get
her to The Everest," Moroney said. "If she can get
a slot there, that would be great."
NEW ZEALAND
Falkirk goneAfter succumbing to age, Windsor Park Stud’s
pensioned stallion Falkirk (Tale Of The Cat) was
yesterday laid to rest, aged 20, at the farm where
he was born and raised. “Falkirk is an integral part
of Windsor Park’s success story,” Windsor Park
co-owner and studmaster Rodney Schick said.
“We purchased and raced his grandmother, bred
and raced his Group winning dam Madam Valeta
with our good friend Alan Burnet, with whom
we also bred and raced Falkirk. Falkirk has been
very special to us for many years and we will miss
having him around. We are fortunate to have a few
of his daughters to breed on with now including
Supreme, the dam of this season's leading two-
year-old filly Play That Song.” Falkirk was the sire
of 168 winners and 11 stakes winners.
Miller ramping up for springYoung trainer Daniel Miller is looking forward to
a return to racing and has three runners engaged
at a bumper set of trials at Te Rapa today. A total
of 293 horses are engaged for the trial meeting as
racing emerges from a Covid-19 hibernation. For
23-year-old Miller, lockdown gave him time to
focus on some of his younger brigade in addition
to the breaking and pre-training element to
his business. “I turned all of the racehorses out
and I had ten yearlings to break-in throughout
lockdown. I was still pretty busy,” Miller said. “It
is good to balance the breaking and pre-training
with training racehorses but I have just applied
for my Class A trainers’ license and as far as I am
aware it is all going through. I am working 25 at
the moment and probably only five are breakers
or pre-trainers and come July 1, I’d imagine my
team will be mainly racehorses.”
Lowry looks ahead to new seasonWhile many jockeys will be looking to get back
raceday riding later this month, southern hoop
Jacob Lowry has set his sights towards the new
season for his return. The 22-year-old enjoyed
the break from riding, but he said he was rearing
to get back on the track as soon as the country
went to alert level 3 last month. “It’s great to be
back riding,” he said. “After all of that time off
you usually don’t want to get back to work, but
it’s been good being back. If anything, the break
has really got me motivated to get back riding.”

The catalogues for July’s Inglis

The Inglis Australian Weanling Sale at
Sydney’s Riverside Stables will see 331 lots
go through the Warwick Farm sales ring on
July 8 before the Inglis Great Southern Sale at
Melbourne’s Oaklands complex on July 12,
which will feature 276 lots.
Graduates of the Australian Weanling
Sale include dual The Everest (1200m) winner
Redzel (Snitzel) as well as Group 1 winners
Begood Toya Mother (Myboycharlie), Spright
(Hinchinbrook) and Leicester (Wanted).
Among the highlight lots this year are
a Hellbent colt out of regally-bred Group 2
winner Sister Madly (Redoute’s Choice), a
Shooting To Win (Northern Meteor) half-
brother to recent Robert Sangster Stakes (Gr
1, 1200m) conqueror Bella Vella (Commands)
and a Pride Of Dubai (Street Cry) half-brother
to this season’s Reisling Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m)
victor Dame Giselle (I Am Invincible).

Four days later, the Inglis Great Southern

“We’re really very pleased with how the
catalogues for both the Australian Weanling
Sale and the Great Southern Sale have come
together,” Sebastian Hutch, Inglis general
manager of bloodstock and marketing, told
ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday.
“Under the circumstances, to be able to
accumulate nearly 600 foals across the two
catalogues is very satisfying. There looks
to be good strength and depth across both
catalogues, a number of very well-related
foals, the progeny of the best-proven stallions,
the most progressive stallions and the most
commercially appealing stallions too.
“We’ve got first season stallions across each
sale, there’s great depth and strength
among the vendors which is very
pleasing too.”
Hutch believes that the timing of
both sales, between Easter Round 2
and the Scone Yearling Sale on July 5
and the Melbourne Gold Yearling Sale
on July 16, is a positive as well.
“The scheduling of our sales
just appears to be working nicely for
people,” Hutch said. “It’s going to be
a busy number of days across that period,
but we’re confident that the scheduling is
something that can work really well for both
vendors and for buyers and that’s proven by the
quality of foal that we’ve been entrusted with.
“We’re really very much looking forward
to it. The sequence of sales is going to present
a challenge in terms of the volume of work to
be done over a short period of time. We have
a strong team and we are well-prepared for it.
Hopefully we can enjoy a constructive period
over that month before we start to plan for the
yearling sales next year.”
Hutch believes that there will still be a market
for weanlings in the current environment with
plenty of potential pinhooking opportunities
available.
“It’s very hard to gauge where the market
is likely to sit at this stage,” he said. “As is
demonstrated by the success of the graduates
out of each of the sales, there is a tremendous
opportunity at these sales for end users to buy
quality racehorses of the future. Similarly, it’s
an important opportunity for pinhookers to
accumulate quality stock with the 2021 yearling
sales series in mind.
“Irrespective of the challenges that we face
over the next number of months, there are just
going to be people who want to be involved in
the yearling sales series next year. The weanling
sales are an important part of identifying stock
that can be targeted towards those sales. As has
been evidenced year after year, time and time
again, there are opportunities through these
sales for people to invest and - with diligent
work and some luck - make a significant profit
into the yearling sales next year.”

You may not hear Advance
Australia Fair at Leopardstown
tonight - although there is an
Order Of Australia listed on the
card - but there is set to be a true Australian
flavour to the second Irish card back post
Covid-19.
Russian Emperor (Galileo), the third foal
out of four-time Australian Group 1 winner
Atlantic Jewel (Fastnet Rock), is set to jump as
favourite in the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial
(Gr 3, 1m 2f) tonight. He is one of the few Irish
flat horses to have already raced this season,
breaking his maiden over a mile at Naas at
the first meeting of the term - just before the
Covid-19 pandemic brought the country’s
racing industry to a shuddering halt.
He will be aiming to join Aidan O’Brien’s
assault on either the Epsom Derby (Gr 1, 1m
4f) or the Irish Derby (Gr 1, 1m 4f), with the
maestro set to send out a big team for both
three-year-old features. And, unlike most of
O’Brien’s team, he does not race in the Magnier,
Tabor or Smith colours, instead sporting Laurie
Macri’s registered silks.
"He won first time out this season at Naas
and we think a mile and a quarter will suit him
really well,” O’Brien told Racing Post. “He was
still a bit green at Naas and he is learning all the
time. The extra distance will help him and we
think he's a nice horse."
O’Brien has won the Derby Trial with the
likes of Galileo (Sadler’s Wells), High Chaparral
(Sadler’s Wells), Yeats (Sadler’s Wells), Dylan
Thomas (Danehill) and Fame And Glory
(Montjeu). High Chaparral was the last to
progress to win the Derby at Epsom, while
Fame And Glory was his most recent winner to
also add the Irish Derby.
It could be a case of third time lucky for
the Mark Kavanagh-trained super filly, who
won the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and
the All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) as a three-

year-old before adding the Memsie Stakes
(Gr 1, 1400m) and the Caulfield Stakes (Gr 1,
2000m) at five. She won ten of her 11 starts, her
only defeat coming by a nose at the hands of
promising stallion Dundeel (High Chaparral)
in the Underwood Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m).
Her first foal Empireofthedragon (Galileo),
formerly Yulong Dragon, is an unraced five-
year-old who has changed hands a number of
times. He started with O’Brien in Ireland before
Yulong made the decision to bring him to
Australia, putting him in the hands of Lindsay
Park trainers David and Ben Hayes and Tom
Dabernig.
However, Racing Australia notes that he has
changed hands a number of times since: first
to Nathan Dunn, then to Barry Muddle, before
joining Helen White’s Kyneton stable.
Foal two is named Pacific Ocean (Galileo), a
winner of one of his six starts - a Navan maiden
over a mile. He is yet to be seen as a four-year-old.
Russian Emperor is foal number three,
while his two-year-old sister remains one of 20
Ballydoyle foals yet to be named.
Should Russian Emperor head to Epsom,
he will be attempting to become the second
consecutive Derby winner to be out of an
Australian-bred mare. Last year’s Derby winner
Anthony Van Dyck (Galileo) is out of Australian
Group 3 winner Believe’n’Succeed (Exceed
And Excel) - coincidentally, also trained by
Kavanagh.
Atlantic Jewel, though, is not the only
Australian Group 1-winning mare to be
represented at Leopardstown tonight.
Three-time Group 1 winner Sea Siren
(Fastnet Rock) will be aiming to become a
stakes-winning producer herself when the
Jessica Harrington-trained Celestial Object
(Galileo) steps out in the Leopardstown Fillies
Trial Stakes (Gr 3, 7f).
Celestial Object, rated a high single-figures
chance in early markets, has won one of her
four starts, which came in a maiden over this
course and distance in October. She was far
from disgraced when finishing fourth in Listed
company a week later.
In her favour is likely firm ground, given she
hasn’t struck anything firmer than a soft track
in her career to date. Her dam was better on top
of the ground and that gives her an opportunity
in what appears a very strong race on paper.

Saturday’s turf card took him to 22 winners for the
season and fifth place on the riders’ standings.
Barros got off to a flying start winning the
first of the day, the 0 to 45 Special Conditions
Race over 1200 metres, on the Stephen Chow-
trained For Community (Jimmy Choux).
For Community handled the heavy
conditions well to beat the $1.80 race favorite Chi
Chai Sin Sang (Per Incanto) by a length and a half,
with Luen On Prodigy (Husson) back in third.
The tried and true wet tracker One Belt One
Road (Haradasun) was the second of Barros’
winners when he romped through the testing
conditions to win the last of the day, the Class
4 over 1200 metres, giving the eight-year-old his
eighth win in the enclave.
One Belt One Road has proved to be a good
money spinner for connections with his prize
money nudging the HKD$2.5 million (A$460,000)
mark for his eight wins and 21 placings from 89
runs in Macau since arriving in July, 2015.
The gelding commenced his racing career
in Australia, racing as War Affair when prepared
by Bobby Pearse at Randwick. He placed at
Randwick and Wyong in his ten runs in Sydney
before being exported to Macau.
One Belt One Road is a half-brother to Real
Supreme (Flying Spur), who acquitted himself
well in his early days in Hong Kong, winning
eight races and rising to a career high mark of
100. He was fourth in the Macau Hong Kong
Trophy (Listed, 1500m) at Taipa in 2013.
Like One Belt One Road, Barros is a much-
travelled jockey who - like most Brazilian
jockeys - completed his apprenticeship in the
famed Sao Paolo Apprentice Jockeys’ Academy.
Life was tough going early days for him and
Barros decided to travel the world working in
the racing industry to further his knowledge.
He spent time working in places like Dubai,
Belgium, Italy and the UK where he got the
opportunity to ride in a few races before ending
up based in Sweden.
An opportunity came for a three-month
contract in Macau and Barros got off to a great
start by booting home a double at only his
second race meeting; he was quick to follow
that up with more winners.
One of the busiest jockeys at the track in
the morning, Barros has now firmly established
himself and rides for a wide cross section of
stables. Able to ride at 119 pounds and just 30
years old, it seems his perseverance to stay in
the game is now starting to pay off.
Japanese rider Masa Tanaka kicked home his
seventh winner in Macau with the Geoff Allendorf-
prepared Association Seven (Manhattan Rain) in
the Class 3 over 1500 metres.
Association Seven began well and soon after
led. He was content to stay hard against the rail
which was plainly the best part of the track.
The five-year-old was pressured around the
home turn by both Mountain Eagle (Shamoline
Warrior) and Pearl Lucky (Red Giant), but
dropped them soon after when let stride and
raced away for an easy three and a quarter
lengths win over Chromium Alloy (Testa Rossa),
with Magnapegasus (Magnus) a distant third.
Tanaka has been in Macau since January
and, although it took him 31 rides to notch his
first winner, he is starting to get a foot in the
door with better opportunities coming his way.
Shogo Nakano is the second Japanese
rider based in Macau and he also was seen to
advantage in race five, the Class 4 & 5 over 1500
metres, on the Victor Chan-prepared Qipao
Queen (Love Conquers All).
Qipao Queen went into the race with more
wet form than most. She was able to race on the
lead to the corner before running away for an
easy win over Satono Eternal (Deep Impact)
with Association Eighty (Declaration Of War)
back in third.
Nakano is into his second full season
in Macau and after posting 12 winners last
year is now on nine victories for the current
season.
As at 9.30am on Saturday morning, a total
of 51 millimeters of rain had fallen on the Taipa
track. A subsequent inspection established that
whilst heavy, there was a good cover of grass on
the track and conditions were safe.
However, later in the afternoon, the heavens
opened up with some heavy downpours.
Although some races were rescheduled, racing
was able to continue which is a great testament
to the track surface.
