The name comes from the Italian golden apple.

Homeland - South America, where there are still some wild and semi-shape tomato. In the middle of the XVI century, the tomato was in Spain, Portugal, and then to Italy, France and other European countries, the earliest recipe for a dish of tomatoes in a cookbook published in Naples in 1692. In the XVIII century, the tomato falls to Russia, where it was first cultivated as an ornamental plant. For a long time, tomatoes were considered inedible and even poisonous. European gardeners planted them as an exotic ornamental plant.

The tomato is now grown and eaten around the world. It is used in diverse ways, including raw in salads, and processed into ketchup or tomato soup. Unripe green tomatoes can also be breaded and fried, used to make salsa, or pickled.

Their consumption is believed to benefit the heart, among other organs. They contain the carotene lycopene, one of the

most powerful natural antioxidants.
