The church that grew with the nation

The story of the beginnings of St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church includes periods of war and peace; times of great prosperity and deep economic depression; tales of singular men and women from many lands who came – and still come – to serve the Lord and Malaysia; and the lives and work of some extraordinary men of God.

St Andrew’s has existed as a congregation since 1902, building the present structure in 1918 and continuing as a witness for Jesus Christ, being disrupted only by the Japanese invasion in Malaya during World War II.

In 2017, the church celebrated 100 years of God’s faithfulness. A local news daily published a news on the centenary celebration with the headline The church that grew with the nation, aptly describing the work of the church through the years in being a witness for Christ where it is placed.

Life of the church

St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church is the home to a culturally rich and a vibrant congregation with local and expatriate communities.

The church has approximately 300 worshippers attending two Sunday worship services. The Traditional Worship Service commences at 8.30 am with hymns accompanied by the organ or piano. The Contemporary Worship Service starts at 11.00 am with songs and praise accompanied by an instrumental group with percussion.

The congregation is attended by locals and those from countries such as the Netherland, France, United Kingdom, Ireland, United States, Indonesia, South Korea, Japan, Nigeria, India and Sri Lanka.

Holy Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of every month. The Sunday School has an attendance of around 70 children and is held during the second service in the classrooms within the main church building.

Other Ministries include Bible Study Groups, Home Fellowships, Leadership Programs, Women’s Fellowship, and Mission and Outreach through which the church reaches out to the indigenous people of Malaysia and also to the refugee population.

The church is governed by representative bodies composed of Elders, Ministers of the Word and Sacrament, Deacons and qualified lay members of the congregation.

Life in Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur is the capital of Malaysia with an estimated population of 1.7 million in an area of about 243 square kilometre. It is among the fastest growing metropolitan regions in Southeast Asia, in both population and economic development. The city is at the crossroad of Asia with a diverse and multi-religious population, including the country's three major ethnic groups: the Malays, the Chinese and the Indians. It also has a vibrant expatriate community and immigrant groups. Most locals are fluent in English as well as Malay language and maybe even a third or fourth language.

The weather in Kuala Lumpur is warm and sunny all year round with abundant rainfall. Temperatures tend to remain constant between 25°C and 35°C. The city has been ranked No. 70 in the world and No. 2 in Southeast Asia in terms of livability by the Economist Intelligence Unit. Forbes has also named Kuala Lumpur at No. 6 in its list of 10 best cities to retire abroad, and the best in Asia, with factors include world class healthcare, affordable cost of living and widely spoken English. It has undergone rapid development in recent decades. It is home to the tallest twin buildings in the world, the Petronas Twin Towers, which have become an iconic symbol of Malaysia's development.

Opportunity: International Pastor

The position of the International Pastor is fully paid with accommodation provided in the Manse which is within the church premises. This is a historical building which dates back to 1922. The top floor is the expatriate Pastor’s apartment. It is fully furnished with modern conveniences. The apartment consists of a master bedroom with an attached bathroom, and two guest rooms with a shared bathroom.

There is also a private study for the Pastor, a living room, a dining area and a well equipped kitchen. The apartment is fully air-conditioned. The ground floor contains the expatriate Pastor’s office.

The administration office of the church is managed by three full time staff. Additionally, there are gardeners and janitorial staff employed on a part time basis. The other appointments of the church are a Minister at Large (with the responsibility in mission, the larger ministry of the church and pastoral care) and a Director of Christian Education.

The Malaysian regulation requires that a work permit is obtained from the immigration authorities for an expatriate Pastor. The permit is issued for an initial period of three years with the possibility of this being extended for a further three years. Our last Pastor completed six years of service in June 2018. The Pastor Search Committee will accept applications until a suitable candidate is found.

Job description

St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church is seeking for an International Pastor to provide spiritual and pastoral leadership for the congregation. The position is based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The church has recently celebrated 100 years of God’s faithfulness and is looking for a Pastor who’ll work with the leadership team to fulfill the vision and mission of the church, and shepherd its diverse congregation of locals and expatriates.

Responsibilities

§ Preaching and Conduct of Worship • Preach dynamic, expository messages based on the Bible with strong application to daily life.

Develop a preaching plan to ensure consistency and high quality of sermons and worship services.

• Provide leadership in worship services, work with the Worship committee to ensure the services run smoothly

• Administer the sacraments in partnership with the elders, deacons and other church staff • To take the lead in the Prayer ministry together with other pastors

§ Pastoral Care

• Provide leadership in pastoral care for the needs of the congregation in partnership with the elders, deacons and church staff

• This includes visitations, counselling and prayers and others

§ Leadership • Work with the Session/leadership team and various ministry leaders to provide spiritual

oversights to fulfill the vision and mission of the church • Assist the Session and leadership groups in defining strategic goals and plans for various

ministries in the church. Support, promote and encourage the ministries. • The pastor’s primary focus is God and his word. The Pastor is also accountable to the

Session and to the members of St Andrews Presbyterian Church. § Evangelism and Discipleship

• Build disciples of Christ and equipping the church for various works of ministry • Identifying the gaps and needs in the congregation, working on filling and developing the

needs systematically • Work with the leadership team in setting direction and developing missions and outreach

programs based on the mission and vision of the church.

Qualifications and Personal Characteristics

§ Minimum of 7 years experience as a full-time pastor § Relevant biblical degree § Strong sense of God’s calling § Ordained in a reformed tradition, preferably Presbyterian § Fluent in English and has strong verbal and written communication skills § Able to lead a multi-cultural congregation, understand diverse communities, able to work with

groups of all ages and able to shepherd them

§ Commitment to expository preaching, biblical teaching and pastoral counselling § Able to be actively involved in leading the congregation to grow in faith and live out the faith daily § An energetic team player with the ability to demonstrate initiative and resilience § Able to build community and fellowship, developing trust, collaboration and mutual respect § Has a close personal relationship with God, will maintain and enhance knowledge, skills and

abilities for the work through continuous learning
