In September 2015 Magnus Fröhling was appointed as new Professor of Business Administration with the mission of Natural Resources Management at the Faculty of Business Administration. His main re-search interest is in the analysis, evaluation and optimization of industrial value chains with regard to their sustainability. He start-ed teaching in the IMRE Programme. At the end of September 2015 the Faculty (and the IMRE office) moved to the new building at Schlossplatz 1, in the city centre. After helping to unpack and install, Berit Ludwig left the IMRE team to expect her baby (She is now the proud mother of a son). In November, Kaden Belinda took the secretary position and replaced Berit Ludwig. From September until December 2015, Jacob Sanders and Linus Unmüßig (both IMRE 2014) spent an exchange semester at Taita Taveta University College in Voi, Kenya as pioneering students.

In 2015, for the Winter Term, 45 stu-dents were immatriculated, an all-time record. This number does not comprise those accepted applicants who, for var-ious reasons, were unable to start up their studies in October 2015 and al-ready have been admitted for start-up in the Summer Term of 2016. If added to the 2015 intake, the total number will be more than 50. This shows that the MBA IMRE Programme remains very attractive to applicants from many countries. Within the 2015 IMRE Gen-eration, there are five “new” countries – Algeria, Egypt (two IMRE!), Greece, Jamaica and Uganda. For the second time only, Australia, Azerbaijan, Ko-rea, Sudan and Taiwan are represent-ed. The existing Double-Degree Pro-gramme with Gubkin University which initiated in 2014 generated its first Graduate (Alexey Mudrakov) and two more Gubkin Students (Anna Strelko-

va and Vasilevna Arina Yakobi) fin-ished their exchange stay at the IMRE Program in Freiberg.

The traditional IMRE Opening Cere-mony took place on 30 October for IMRE 2015, IBDEM 2015 and Ground Water Management (MGWM) 2015 students at Senatsaal. This was the first time the three study programmes had their opening ceremony together. Words of welcome and greetings from Prof. Merkel, Prorektor of TU Bergakademie Freiberg, JCB, Johan-nes Stephan, director of the MBA IBDEM Programme and Manuela Junghans of the International Universi-ty Centre were said. Keynote speaker Tom Hänel addressed the topic of “Industry 4.0 and Resource Efficien-cy”. Kanishka Raj Rathore (IMRE 2013) and Ana Munguia Castrillo (IMRE 2014) welcomed the new stu-dents. The ceremony was closed with the traditional do-nut tasting.

Starting in October 2015 the IMRE Team is involved in a new project in collaboration with Syncwork AG of Dresden, a software supplier, for Um-weltbundesamt as the client. The pur-pose of the project is to develop an Open Access Platform about Natural Resources. Users will be able to enter and retrieve publicly accessible infor-mation about natural resources. The IMRE Team will deliver the content structure for the Platform. The problem to be solved consists in the delivery of a systematic approach to characterize information about natural resources, formats and users.

E-Mobility Project

Together with Umweltamt Chemnitz, IMRE students investigate the poten-tial of E-mobility in urban transport. If the city wants to implement its share to the objective of the German govern-ment of one million e-cars in 2020 (no one believes this will happen) the cur-rent fleet in the whole city of 81 cars needs to increase to 2.900 cars. Inde-pendent of this,Umweltamt wants to know incentives for operating e-cars. Hence, several segments of urban transport are investigated, such as commuting traffic, public administra-

tion mobility, inner-city delivery ser-vices etc. In the same context, the ac-ceptance of e-cars through business models such as car sharing is investi-gated. For this part of the project, sur-veys and personalized interviews have been made.

The ENERESE Project funded by the EU TEMPUS Programme continued and two meetings took place in which Nicoleta Gurita participated. First she went to a Meeting of the ENERESE Project Team in Ljubljana, Slove-nia from 5 January until 7 January to learn about the performance and the consecutive steps to be taken in the framework of the project. Next, she travelled to the Meeting of the ENERESE Project Team in Belgrade, Serbia from 6 September until 8 September. This was the offi-cial concluding meeting except that the project was prolonged and it will terminate at the end of January 2016.

In the framework of the ENERESE Project, JCB gave some lectures at Faculty of Civil Engineering of the University of Montenegro in Pod-gorica from 6 to 11 June. His topics included electricity markets, the eco-nomics of renewable energy and in-vestment and finance for renewable energy. The lecture notes have been posted at the ENERESE website.

Fact Finding Mission Tajikistan From 22 August until 29 August JCB participated together with the Dean of the faculty in a Fact Finding Mission in Tajikistan. The major goal was to develop an education map with infor-mation on teaching and research ac-

tivities in the fields of mining, pro-cessing, management of raw materi-als. Many meetings and discussions with personalities in government de-partments, agencies, educational insti-tutions and business took place.

Visit to University of Finance in Guangzhou, China From Xuzhou JCB went to Guang-zhou and he had a meeting with rep-resentatives of the University of Fi-nance on 23 October (see the note about Dr. Chengzhi Long below).

Various issues about student ex-change were discussed. This was a first attempt to enter into contact with a university in the south of China.

Teaching in Kenya

Guest Lecture in Tianjin, China

At the invitation of Prof. Zhang Yan-lin (IMRE 1999), JCB gave a guest lecture on 25 September 2015 at Tian-jin University of Finance and Eco-nomics. He addressed the topic of “Can Tourism Economics learn from

Forest Economics?” Both activities make use of land and landscapes and both have to care about the long-term conservation of this resource for their own sustainability. Hence, there is a lesson to learn.

In February 2015, JCB participated in short-term teaching at Taita Taveta University College in Kenia. The top-ics included resource and commodity economics and environmental man-agement in the mining and extractive industries. He held a seminar for stu-

dents and young lecturers to discuss skills for creating presentations, tech-nical reports and research proposals. Individual consultations also took place, especially about study and doc-toral studies at German universities.

Participation in a conference in Xuzhou, China

At the invitation of Professor Wolf-gang Wende of Leibniz-Institut für ökologische Raumentwicklung (IÖR) in Dresden and Professor Jiang Chang of China University of Mining and Technology, JCB travelled to Xuzhou for a conference on Planning Innova-tion: Ecological Reconstruction and Sustainable Development of Mining Areas” from 12 to 16 October. Xu-zhou is one of hundreds of coal min-ing cities in China and, with deposits becoming depleted, the problem of rehabilitation and re-use of mining sites is now being raised. Participants

from China, Austria, South Africa and Germany shared experiences on this issue. JCB gave a paper on a multi-disciplinary research agenda for the rehabilitation of mining areas.

Visiting Mongolian Delegation

Between 8 and 14 December, three sep-arate delegations from Mongolia visit-ed Freiberg. The members represented several Ministries and Public Admin-istrations and the German Mongolian Institute of Resources and Technology (GMIT). GMIT is a new university set up with German Quality Standards. They were received by the Rector and several other officials of TU Bergakad-emie Freiberg. Especially Dordjerem Nyamjav, Rector, and Tugalag Tseden-bal, Head of Academic Affairs of

GMIT, have to be menotioned. Before these meetings, JCB attended a work-shop at DAAD in Bonn on 26 Novem-ber to discuss new study programmes at GMIT. It became clear that the MBA IMRE Programme fits in very well with the future developments at GMIT and appropriate steps for implementa-tion in 2016 were agreed. The delega-tions also met with Mongolian students in Freiberg and Orgil Sainkhuu (IMRE 2012), working with TAKRAF, came to join.

IMRE Alumni Meeting in Beijing From 21 to 25 September 2015, the yearly IMRE Alumni Meeting took place in Beijing with generous finan-cial support from DAAD. The 40 par-ticipants came from Azerbaijan, Chi-na, Germany, France, Ghana, Indone-sia, Mexico, Pakistan, Romania, Tai-wan and Ukraine. In collaboration with the School of Economics and Management of Beijing Forestry Uni-versity, the participants met in the first two days for a conference on "Green Technologies in China". Jacob Klei-now and Benjamin Aust from the Chair of Investment and Finance (Prof. Dr. Horsch) designed and man-aged a workshop on the financing of environmental investments in coopera-tion with the Guangdong University of Finance, and Tom Hänel from the Chair of Economic Computer Science (Prof. Dr. Felden) held an acclaimed plenary on Industry 4.0 and resource efficiency. Many contributions were provided by IMRE Alumni and they presented their experience from pro-fessional practice. The second day began with a greeting from Dr. Schmidt-Dörr, Head of the DAAD office in Beijing. He empha-sized the rather unusual longstanding DAAD promoting the MBA IMRE program far beyond the initial phase. He also reported in his contribution on the seventy years presence of DAAD in China, with a long break after 1945.

More than 11 thousand “German” alumni are recorded in the DAAD Chi-na office. Dr. Schmidt-Dörr, JCB and the management of the School of Eco-nomics and Management of the Bei-jing Forest University had a meeting about future cooperation possibilities. For this purpose a working protocol was signed.

The third day was spent on an excur-sion to a plant based waste water treat-ment facility in a village north of Bei-jing (technology designed in Germa-ny!). Needless to say that IMRE also climbed up all steps to the Great Wall on day four.

Procurement Strategies for Rare Earth Elements (REE)

Resource – Efficient Production and Provision of Products

The thesis of Jiangxue Liu deals with the production chain of REE and its various risk factors. In comparison to common metals, there are many chal-lenges to apply this approach to a REE project, such as: 1) technical fea-sibility is essential for the success of a REE project; 2) The development phase is long-lasting and risks vary as it continues, 3) There is no transparent market for REE products and only limited data about production vol-umes and prices are available. Hence, a real options model in multi-dimensional binomial lattice for eval-

uation of a REE project has been de-veloped. All project related risk fac-tors are estimated by a Monte Carlo simulation by setting range limits ac-cording to project status and location. The future prices are forecasted by a so called Mean Reverting method. The model provides a method of as-sessing varies risks of a REE project from development stage until market stage. It incorporates the market price of each individual REO and uses pro-duction data to capture volume uncer-tainty.

The PhD project of Nicoleta Gurita has the aim to design incentive-based approaches to sustainable and re-source-efficient delivery of small electronic products and a recovery of strategic and critical metals from elec-tronic waste. She has now developed a mathematical model to measure the stocks and the monetary value of stra-

tegic and critical metals stocks in selected electron-ic equipment. She has also explored the current Ger-

man Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Management System for mobile phone and smartphone waste streams with the goal of identifying the potential of closing the resources loop. She has set up a cost benefit analysis for the end-of-life management of mobile phones and smartphones to find out that there are significant potential revenues from recycling these products. This leads to the design of Product Service Systems (PSS) to achieve a closed loop supply chain for strategic and precious metals in small electronic products.

Renewable Energy (RE) for the Mining Industry

Construction Products in the Perspective of User‘s Decision-making

The Competitiveness of Taiwan: the opportunities and challenges

Kateryna Zharan is a PhD candidate at the IMRE Chair and she investigates the opportunities for the use of Re-newable Energy (RE) in the European Mining Industry. So far, she has been exploring the current status of RE and its near-future perspective. At least in some European countries with mining sectors, the potential of RE in terms of quantity is already available and in-creasing. She also made an analysis of

the costs of generating electricity from RE and from conventional sources to find out quite comparable levels (LCOE). The next steps consist in an investigation of barriers and opportu-nities for RE in mining and the devel-opment of appropriate business mod-els. Case studies about RE already used in mining operations will give illustrative inspiration.

Huiju Tsai (IMRE 2002) was a visiting PhD scholar for three months. Her work will focus on the service liberali-zation in international trade, and its influences on Taiwan’s competitive-ness. International trade has been very essential to Taiwan. As an export-oriented economy, over 70 percent of Taiwan’s GDP comes from interna-tional trade. Services have been the

fastest growing in the past decades. In Asia, various economic integration agreements have been promoted and concluded and countries are gradually liberalizing their markets, including the service sector. For Taiwan, with its special political position, it is im-portant to analyze the political and economic impacts of these agreements.

The main purpose of the research work of Mariia Rochikashvili is finding out to which extent take the potential users of construction products sustainability into account during the decision-making process and how well could they align themselves in all the legisla-tion frameworks and calculation tools for the sustainable construction prod-ucts. Science the selection of a con-struction product is a complex and del-icate task determined by the immense

number of products options. Choices of a construction product according to the sustainability objectives require basic knowledge of sustainable prod-ucts. An outcome of the research work is a model that contains the full overview of the tools and frameworks help iden-tify ecological construction products as well as their environmental impact de-gree, which could help in the next step for estimation the decision-making.

Economic-mathematical modeling of costs for CO2-enhanced oil recovery in Russia

A new scientific construct: Sustainability mental model

Ksenia Sidorova from the National Minerals University spent three months in Freiberg to proceed with her PhD work. She explores the po-tential to use sequestered CO2 for En-hanced Oil Recovery (CO2-EOR). This reduces the negative impact on climate of electricity generation and it improves the potential to recover oil from nearly depleted fields. The main ideas of the research amount to providing a conceptual justification

of CO2 EOR projects feasible for im-plementation in Russia, developing a methodology to estimate the costs of CO2 capture, transportation, injection and monitoring, and assessing the po-tential benefits. This also implies an assessment of the geological storage potential of Russian oil fields, moni-toring their performance and design-ing a policy to integrate government and industry responsibilities.

Dr. Long, Chengzhi, researcher of Guangdong University of Finance, will spend one year at TU Bergakade-mie Freiberg. His research is concen-trated on three topics: (i) sustainability management in Germany industrial companies and the potential for trans-ferring knowledge and experience to companies in China, (ii) development of a research agenda for sustainability management in China and (iii) estab-lish a framework for academic educa-tional projects about sustainability management.

Currently, he works on a Sustainabil-ity Mental Model (SMM) to explore sustainability issues from a socio-psychological perspective. SMM is defined as a perceptional map, includ-ing cognitive knowledge, values and behavioral intentions which, in combi-nation, can explain a person’s attitude to sustainability. For this purpose, he has developed and applied a survey with metrics which can reliably AND systematically verify the SMM. For this, use is made of exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory fac-tor analysis (CFA).
