Beer Awards 2016 Hong Kong International

Beer Awards

www.RestaurantAndBarHK.com2page

The rise in consumption of craft beer shows no sign of slowing as people’s interest in good, properly produced artisanal produce continues to grow. Some (not all) commercial beer manufacturers have been producing homogenous branded lager using the most economical method possible to produce a bland end-product that does very little to excite. I believe that people are only just waking up to the fact that there are better alternatives and are now demanding a more natural and tastier artisanal product, made with care and attention by master brewers. If you look at the craft beer market seven years ago when we launched the Hong Kong International Beer Awards it was pretty small compared with what it is today. For our first beer awards in 2009 we had 100 craft beers enter, in 2016 we have had over 450 entries and the standard of the entries was incredibly high. This growth in the number of craft beers available in the city today is a direct result of increasing interest from consumers, across the demographic spectrum, in really great beer. I would go as far as to say that the choice available to beer enthusiasts in Hong Kong today, is better than any other city I can think of in the world in terms of diversity. With several local micro and nano breweries opening in the city this past year the future for craft beer in Asia looks very healthy and Hong Kong is positioning itself at the very heart of it.Cheers (乾杯)!

NeubourgNeubourg Pilsner

In its stylish blue bottle,

this pilsner is heightened by a

sophisticated combination of bitter

herbs, blossom and fruit tones with an aromatic barley structure, which

forms full flavours and a noble bitterness. Brewed with non-modified natural

ingredients, the brewers use water from their own sources, hops from their

own hop garden and barley from the province of Limburg, which is in

the deep south of the Netherlands on the borders of Germany

and Belgium.

With no artificial flavours or additives, and no GMO ingredients, this sustainable craft beer is manufactured with home-grown ingredients.

The main adjunct in Waku Waku Rice Ale is Koshihikari rice grown in Waku

Waku rice paddies across Ishikawa. It’s also considered a healthy beer

choice by maintaining GABA components (which are good for relaxing

and reducing high blood pressure) in the malt through a low-temperature

malt-drying technique.

Heavenly rebel to monk warrior, this beer captures the Monkey King’s beloved tale in an amber ale – a cheeky brew boasting a beautiful heart of caramel and a fruity aroma of the Queen Mother’s peaches of immortality, which were stolen by the Monkey King himself. Chinese culture.

This traditional Belgian brown

ale uses high fermentation,

with refermentation in the

beer made with dark barley

malts and four hops that give it

a rich flavour.

Dark ruby in colour, and brewed with seven varieties of imported malts, this beer has a complex finish with hints of smoke and peat, paired with a malty richness and a right hook of hop power that give it the bad attitude a beer named Dirty Bastard has to live up to.

With an aroma and taste more sessionable than its 8% ABV body lets on, Wishbone pours a clear, bright gold with a fluffy white head and light, sticky lacing throughout the glass, with a nose featuring tropical citrus notes of pineapple, lychee and pear accented by pine resin. Medium mouthfeel with big, sweet hops balanced by a bready finish offered by mostly pale malt and just enough backbone to support the intense hop quantities.

Hitachino Nest Japanese Classic

Ale is a recreation of the first

Japanese beer made in the Edo

period. It’s a bottle-conditioned

beer with a fine creamy head, a

medium-bodied mouthfeel and

a sweet-bitter flavour. Enjoy the

unique notes of cedar, as well as

spicy yet mild aromas of traditional

British hops such as Kent Golding

and Fuggle.

Moa Oak-Aged Apple Cider is made from 100% New Zealand apples, fermented and aged in French oak. It has a crisp green-apple aroma, with a clean and refreshing palate that finishes with a touch of sweetness. The Moa Brewing Company was founded in 2003 and their international, multi-award-winning range of beers and ciders are proudly crafted using traditional, costly, inefficient and labour-intensive techniques with a focus on local New Zealand ingredients.

This rich, sour brown ale is inspired by the enigmatic monastic brews of Belgium and the mysterious mist-

shrouded jungles of the tropics. Brewed with real cacao, and

spiced with cinnamon and sweet orange peel for a sensual

delight, this is a brew to be sipped, savoured and enjoyed.

Birra G. Menabrea e FigliMenabrea Amber

This Italian brew is a malty

amber ale with shades of

bronze and a thin head. The

taste is well-rounded and

full-bodied, with moderate

hops and a malty base. It’s a

balanced beer with a marked

floral fruitiness that comes

through from the aromatic

yeasts used in its production.

Two Birds Brewery’s Golden Ale pours a rich, golden colour with hints of honey. Motueka hops from New Zealand contribute to the melon and citrus flavours, while Australian Summer hops deliver spice and apricot notes. It’s a perfect accompaniment for ribs or salad.

Named for the cherry’s botanical appellation – Prunus Avium or Cerasus, according to variety – Prunus is made by adding approximately 20% of fresh cherries (with their pits) to Birra del Borgo’s spelt beer, Duchessa. Distinct from the typical Belgian kriek, it’s not too sour as it retains some of the Duchessa’s smoothness, yet it’s not sugary, thanks to a well-balanced bitter aftertaste.

Judging SystemJudging System

Appearance & Aroma (0-20 points):It’s important that a beer looks right and you can tell a great deal about a beer from how it looks. The colour

gives you an indication of the style and type of malt used. Condition and body are important (the head), and we

also looked for carbonization (in the relevant categories) the size of the bubble and the foam - or lacing – the

head leaves on the side of the glass, as these all affect the taste. As most of our sense of taste is in our nose

the smell also tells us a lot about a beers identity or personality, is it bitter, sweet, sour, etc… The perfect brew

should smell accordingly so could you will be dying to get it in your mouth.

Each beer was blind tasted with the judges having no prior knowledge of the beers characteristics what it was or where it came from. The beers were then scored by each judge out of 100 points (0 points - being undrinkable muck and 100 points - being the nectar of the gods). These points were awarded in two categories:

Tasting (0-80 points):Beer is a product meant to be taken orally, not nasally, and no matter how good a beer looks or smells it’s the

performance in the mouth that really counts. How does it travel? Does it stall on the mid-palate? Does it race

through without really giving the taste buds much to do? The balance of sweetness and bitterness must be right

and it must finish well.

After the arduous judging process the scores were then added up. The highest and the lowest scores were then

discounted and the mean average score indicates our winners.

450 beers – that’s the record-breaking number of entries to this year’s Hong Kong International Beer Awards. After an endurance test of drinking and deliberation, our judges whittled that number down to 21 category winners. Now it’s time to find out which of these 10 beers is the absolute best in Hong Kong. Join us at this year’s Restaurant & Bar Hong Kong at 1:00pm on 6th September, 2016 to witness the final round of judging.
