“As the sun rose on Congo Square [in New Orleans], …hundreds crowded the stage, some dancing and waving white handkerchiefs to the music.”

– Associated Press, April 30, 2012

“Things were ge ng groovy behind the sober, concrete walls of the headquarters of the U.N. Educa onal, Scien c and Cultural Organiza on. About 400 students… were taking master classes. Workshops, lms, lectures and performances by musicians from

around the world preceded an evening concert with an array of ar sts…”– Associated Press, April 27, 2012

“Jazz penetrates the human spirit and resonates in one’s core. It is this quality that earns jazz its reputation for bringing people together, making it an art form worthy of UN recognition as a vehicle for promoting peace and tolerance.”

– Inside the United Nations Blog, May 6, 2012

“Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder and Hugh Masekela starred at the fi nale concert for the fi rst International Jazz Day in New York on Monday. The music luminaries were joined by Hollywood giants including Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman and

Robert de Niro for the multinational attempt at the UN headquarters to put jazz back on a global par with rap and rock.”– TurkishPress.com, May 1, 2012

“‘What is jazz?’ asked legendary trumpeter Quincy Jones at Monday night’s all-star concert in the General Assembly Hall of the UN. The occasion marked the rst annual Interna onal Jazz Day designated by UNESCO, and conceived by its newest

Goodwill Ambassador, Herbie Hancock, in collabora on with the Thelonious Monk Ins tute of Jazz. Every dignitary and music and lm-world luminary present – including co-hosts Morgan Freeman and Herbie Hancock, Tony Benne , Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Thelonious Monk Jr., and more – had their own answer for Jones, because jazz penetrates the human spirit and resonates in one’s core. “This rst Interna onal Jazz Day – April 30, 2012 – was a phenomenal world-wide event, ini ated by composer-pianist Herbie Hancock and reaching at the very least the 195 na ons that had musicians playing Hancock’s “Watermelon Man” in tandem with his

“New York City has always been home to the world’s most storied jazz venues, from Minton’s Playhouse and the Cotton Club of decades past to the Blue Note and Village Vanguard of today. Until now, no one would ever have thought to place the General Assembly of the United Nations – that august room where policies affecting the world are made – on that list. But on the night of April 30, there was no better place in New York – or the rest of the planet – to hear jazz. The ‘Sunset Concert’ closing out the fi rst

annual International Jazz Day, following earlier events in Paris and New Orleans, was a star-studded affair – the hosts were Morgan Freeman, Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas and Quincy Jones – but it was also a phenomenal jazz concert.

– JazzTimes, May 2, 2012

“The audience for the inaugural concert of International Jazz Day at the United Nations on Monday was kissed, time and time again, by moments of sheer musical genius.”– New York Daily News, May 3, 2012

“From its earliest days, when the pianist Jelly Roll Morton spoke of a ‘Spanish tinge,’ jazz has been extraordinarily open to international infl uences. Now it’s offi cial. Last fall UNESCO – the United Nations Educational, Scientifi c and Cultural

Organization – designated jazz a ‘universal music of freedom and creativity’ and decreed that henceforth every April 30 is to be celebrated around the world as International Jazz Day.”

INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY

A Special Message From Irina Bokova, UNESCO Director General

andHerbie Hancock, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue

Chairman, Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz

Jazz is recognized as America’s greatest musical contribution to the world. This art form that originated in the great City of New Orleans now belongs to the citizens of every nation on earth.

For over a century JAZZ -- the universal language of passion and benevolence––has united people of disparate cultures, religions, and nationalities, fostered and strengthened communication and partnerships among heterogeneous groups, enhanced the peace-making process, and demonstrated just how much we all have in common.

Jazz stands for freedom, symbolizes democracy, and has soothed and uplifted the spirits and souls of millions of people residing in all corners of the globe, particularly the disenfranchised citizens who otherwise would have great dif culty expressing and channeling their feelings, emotions, and opinions. No musical art form is more powerful as a diplomatic tool than jazz.

International Jazz Day is a means to highlight, support, and leverage the unifying attributes of this music through worldwide celebratory events and activities on April 30th of each year.

On International Jazz Day, jazz is celebrated, studied, and performed around the world for 24 hours straight. Collaborations abound among jazz icons, scholars, composers, musicians, dancers, writers, and thinkers who embrace the beauty, spirit, and principles of jazz, freely sharing experiences and performances in our big cities and in our small towns, all across our seven continents.

From Algeria to Australia, Malaysia to Montenegro, Papua New Guinea to Poland and beyond, jazz was celebrated in more than 100 countries as part of International Jazz Day 2012. Conferences, concerts and community events were held in schools, clubs, town squares and village centers around the clock reaching more than one billion people. This is an astounding gure that we believe will be surpassed in 2013.

We are delighted to announce that Istanbul, Turkey will serve as our host city for the 2013 International Jazz Day celebration on April 30th. A meeting place of global cultures, Istanbul is an ideal location to highlight the extensive and comprehensive in uence of jazz. An abundant series of of cial celebrations, concerts and educational programs will take place in Istanbul and in locations around the globe, expanding upon the tremendous success of last year’s inaugural International Jazz Day.

On behalf of UNESCO and the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, we invite you to join with us to help make International Jazz Day 2013 a memorable and historic event.
