All International House Newcastle teachers arequalified teachers of the English language and mosthave many years of experience teaching in differentparts of the world.

Progress in learning English is referenced to theCommon European Framework of Reference (CEFR)and monitored by continuous assessment, regulartutorials and internal tests.

All students receive a weekly work plan which refersto the CEFR syllabus. Course materials will beprovided for all students, including a study pack andvocabulary book.

At International House Newcastle, weunderstand our students have different needs.Many students may have very good grammarand writing but need to concentrate on theirspeaking and listening skills. Other studentsneed to improve their writing and reading skillsbut in traditional classes they cannot get thetime and support they need to progress rapidly inthese specific areas. Personal Study Programmes are designed forstudents who want to focus on English for specialpurposes or to improve particular skills inEnglish. Our teachers help you design andmonitor an individual programme which mayinclude: • English for specific purposes, such as

business, academia, medicine or law.• Making presentations, negotiating, attending

meetings, customer care, business theory andpractice.

• Particular skills or grammar, e.g. listening,pronunciation, speaking 1:1 sessions, etc.

• Contextualised English work on personalhobbies or interests, e.g. cinema, music,sports, fashion, environment, politics, etc.

Personal Study Programmes allow us to offer acourse relevant to your individual needs, startingany Monday.

PSP is:• Managed and guided learning with specialised

trained teachers• Adaptable to each individual student• Students working together in small groups

with teachers on hand• Varied: explore reading, writing, listening,

speaking, grammar, vocabulary, etc.• A unique opportunity to speak 1:1 with a

Cambridge Examination Classes (CE)

Academic English forIElTS (AE) • Prepare for the IELTS examination• Focus on reading, writing, speaking or

teachers• Develop study skills and learner independence

EAP/IELTS courses are suitable for studentswho need IELTS to continue on to further orhigher education in the UK and other Englishspeaking countries. The reading, writing,

listening and speaking components of IELTS arestudied and practised. The development of studyskills and learner autonomy is also essential tothese courses.

The teachers on these courses are speciallytrained to prepare students for IELTS. Advice ontaking IELTS and assistance with applications isprovided. These courses provide 10 hours perweek of classroom teaching and 5 hours of AEPSP (AE15). They can also be combined with 10hours of General English each week(AE15+GE10).

Individual students must be at least B1(Intermediate) level to follow this course. Thiscourse is also suitable for students wishing totake the TOEFL or Pearson’s Academic Englishexaminations.

Business English (BE)• International House is a registered centre for BULATS and

TOEIC • Work with materials from Harvard Business School,

University for Industry/LearnDirect and The Institute ofLeadership and Management

• Develop vocabulary and discuss production, marketing,public relations, human resources, finance, advertising,branding, consumer behaviour and forecasting

• Present marketing strategies and statistics moreeffectively

• Develop listening skills in business contexts • Improve English language writing skills for formal letters,

emails, memos, etc.• Improve oral communication skills, both face-to-face and

on the telephone

In Business English classes, English language skills andgrammar are taught within a business context. The courseconsists of 10 hours per week of classroom teaching plus 5hours per week of individual Business PSP.

Business English 15 (BE15) can also be combined with 10hours of General English per week (BE15+GE10). BusinessEnglish students must be at least B2 (Upper Intermediate)level.

Our Business English classes can lead to the CambridgeBULATS examination and International House is arecognised centre.

Internship placements can be arranged in thefollowing fields:• Business• Administration• Marketing• Magazine publishing• Public relations• Finance• Theatres/museums• Media • Hospitality• Web development• IT systems• Law• Graphic design

The aims of the internship are to help thestudent:

• Link theory and practice through practicalexperience of work to complement studies

Private lessons (Pl) Private lessons are designed to meetclients’ individual requirements, e.g. inbusiness, science, medicine, law,tourism, etc. They are conducted on aone-to-one basis. English for Aviation (EA) ICAO (the International Civil AviationOrganisation) states that all internationalairline and helicopter pilots and all air trafficcontrollers for international flights must beable to prove that they have a level of Englishequal to level 4 on the international ICAO scale.

INDIVIDuAl STuDENTS The courses for aviation workers combineGeneral English classes with an aviation-focused Personal Study Programme for £230per week. These courses can be as long as required, from2 weeks to 24 weeks, and can be combined with1:1 classes at an extra £60 per hour.

The objective is to raise the level of Englishtowards level 4 and above, focusing onspeaking and listening skills, especially 'plain'English in an aviation context.

Each course can conclude with the Test ofEnglish for Aviation - price on application.

HoMESTAY ACCoMMoDATIoNInternational House arranges half-board and self-catering homestay accommodation with Englishspeaking hosts/host families living within 20minutes’ travel time of the school. We offer singleor double (if requested) bedrooms with space tostudy. All utilities and Wi-Fi connections are included.Bedding, crockery and cutlery are provided. The rent includestwice weekly cleaning of the common areas, but students areresponsible for keeping their bedroom, bathroom and kitchen in aclean condition. These apartments are ideal for students whowant to be independent and in the company of otherinternational students, close to all the places of interest in thislively university city.

If you come to the UK as a student visitor, you willnot be able to extend your stay while in the UK as astudent visitor or as a student. Please note that as astudent visitor you are not allowed to work while inthe UK. There is no minimum English levelrequirement.

For courses of more than 11 months and/or leading to higher education:PBS Tier 4 (General) Student Visa

Students must study at least 15 hours per week.Further applications for visa extension may bemade, but English Language Course students arenot permitted to work. There is a minimum EnglishLanguage requirement that must be proven with aSecure English Language Test (SELT) certificate,equivalent to (or above) Level B1 on the CommonEuropean Framework of Reference (CEFR).Students must be ready to study on a course atCEFR Level B2. A full list of acceptable certificatesand the grades required can be found on the HomeOffice website:

Visa regulations may change at short notice. Youshould always consult the latest guidance onlinebefore making an application for any visa. Forspecific enquiries, please contact the school.

Visa students need to supply: 1. Course application fully completed,

including a UK address if accommodationhas not been requested via the school.

2. Full payment of fees.

3. A copy of the passport.

4. Which type of visa will beapplied for? • Student Visitor Visa• Extended Student Visitor Visa • PBS Tier 4 (General) Student Visa

5. If applying for a Tier 4 (General) Student Visa,we require the SELT certificate, plusinformation on what you will use your Englishskills for in the future, e.g. university study. Theschool will then inform Tier 4 applicants aboutfurther supporting documentation required.

6. Government-sponsored students who areapplying for a visa will need to pay the relevantnon-refundable booking fee before any visaacceptance documents are issued by the school.

Cancellation and visasIf your visa application is unsuccessful, full fees(excluding administration costs) will be refundedby International House on the on written evidenceof refusal from the Home Office, provided thatevidence is offered at least 1 full week before thecourse start date. In the event that a Tier 4 visa hasbeen obtained using our CAS and the course is notfollowed, we will immediately notify the HomeOffice and withdraw sponsorship by cancelling theCAS. No refund will be given once the course hasstarted. Courses cannot be transferred betweenstudents.

Please contact the school as soon as possible if youare unable to start your course on the date agreed.

Force MajeureThe school is not liable if it takes all reasonableprecautions yet still cannot perform its functionsas a result of extreme weather, emergency, fire,disease, natural, civil or military disaster ordisruption, or act of terrorism. In the event of anoutbreak of infectious disease, all students and/orparents/guardians are required to comply withnational or school rules regarding quarantine. If anepidemic has been declared by the authorities,students should not travel to Newcastle if theysuspect that they are carriers of the infectiousdisease in question.

Course AvailabilityAdults (16+) all year; 13-17 for JHC and 13-17 forEnglish for Football. Students may start theircourse on any Monday (subject to availability).

Junior BookingsAll students under the age of 18 have to comply withUK laws; in particular, regarding the consumption ofalcohol and tobacco. Their parents or guardiansmust complete a Parental Consent form. This formwill be sent with the booking documents and/or canbe downloaded from the booking conditions sectionof the International House Newcastle website. IfInternational House Newcastle does not receive theParental Consent form, it will be assumed that thegeneral rules and conditions outlined in the formhave been accepted by the parents/guardian of thestudent. However, in these circumstances thehomestay will not necessarily accept responsibilityfor enforcing the curfew.

Public Holidays 2014The school reopens on Wednesday, January 6th2014. The school will be closed on the followingpublic holidays in the UK. Christmas and New Year December 20th 2013 to
