WHAT IS A STUDIO SCHOOL?A Studio School is an innovative concept in education, which seeks to address the growing gap between the skills and knowledge that young people require to succeed, and those that the current education system provides.

Studio Schools are designed for 14-19 year olds of all abilities. They are small schools for 300 students; and with year-round opening and a 9-5 working day, they feel more like a workplace than a school.

WHY STUDY WITH US?PERSONALISED CURRICULUMWe understand that each student has their own needs, abilities and talents. Each student will be assigned a personal coach who will support them in all aspects of the Studio School, from homework to careers to social issues.

EMPLOYABILITY AND LIFE SKILLSEverything about our Studio School, from the structure of the day to the curriculum, is revolved around replicating the world of work in order to help students develop the skills they need to succeed in life and work.

KEY QUALIFICATIONSWe offer students a range of academic and vocational qualifications including GCSEs, A Levels and BTEC Diplomas at Level 2 and 3.

Each student chooses a career focused vocational specialism to study in addition to their GCSEs or A Levels. This ensures students graduate with a range of qualifications geared towards careers in international food, travel or business.

We also offer a range of enrichment qualifications to enhance every student’s learning. These include Cabin Crew Certificate and the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

SMALL SCHOOLOur Studio is a small school with a capacity of 300 students offering a personalised and supportive learning environment. High levels of support are offered to each and every one of our students whilst small class sizes mean every student gets the attention they need and deserve in order to help them develop.

PROJECT BASED LEARNINGProject based learning lies at the heart of the Studio School’s curriculum model. We believe it is essential that all students understand why they are learning what they are being taught. Students will apply their learning to a variety of projects which may combine more than one subject. For example, hospitality students will create a dish themselves and then learn how to package, price and market that product for general sale. This project combines Food Technology, Maths and Business.

WEEKLY WORK PLACEMENTSOur students will spend a significant portion of their weekly time gaining experience with local employers in the food, travel and business industries. One day per week for Years 10 and 11 and two days per week for Years 12 and 13.

WORK PLACEMENTSAll students at the International Food & Travel Studio School, from Year 10 through to Year 13, will experience the real working world on weekly work placements with local employers in the food, travel and business industries. The organisation they work with will depend on the specialism they choose.

Year 10 and 11 students will gain one day’s experience each week whilst Year 12 and 13 students will experience 2 days per week.

For example, a year 10 Hospitality student might work one day per week with the Midland Hotel or The Michelin Starred Box Tree Restaurant. A Year 12 Business student might work 2 days per week with Provident Financial.

Weekly work placements are essential to develop the key work and life skills employers are looking for, to combine with qualifications, giving students the best possible chance of future employment.

SUPPORTING EMPLOYERSEvidence consistently shows that employers are concerned about key skills gaps in the British economy and that young people are often leaving school without the necessary skills or a general awareness of the world of work.

Local employers lie at the heart of the Studio School model. They will support the curriculum development to bridge the gap between education and employment.

This relationship is key to ensuring that students leave the Studio School with skills that are relevant to the needs of local businesses and promotes the best possible chance of young people gaining successful employment.

Local businesses from a wide range of public and private sector organisations, large and small, will provide weekly work placements to Studio School students.

“The International Food & Travel Studio School is an innovative school which the Midland Hotel is delighted to support. It focuses on developing young people by linking student qualifications with weekly work placements with local employers. Successful completion of the programme will put students in the best possible position for future employment.”

Gary Peacock, General Manager, Midland Hotel
