Co-hosted by
IN ASSOCIATION WITH
Andy Rice COO, Major Events International (MEI)
International Federations Post Summit ReportThe 3rd International Federations Summit took place on 12th and 13th February in Lausanne, Switzerland- home of the IOC.
The number of delegates was up 470% and the number of Federation representatives attending was up 520%. We still have some way to go to reach perfection- and thank you everyone for your honest feedback on how to improve- but we are certainly heading in the right direction. The dates for 2021 are 24th and 25th February. We hope to see you there!
This report captures the key learnings and, with a unique multi-media approach, gives those who did not attend a glimpse into what they missed; and those who were there, the key presentations to remind them of ‘points to self’ or actions.
We are grateful to the co-author of the event, Tom Dielen of World Archery; also for the proactive advocacy of Attila Miszer from Budapest; to Sports Video Group for their support and to our sponsors and stand holders who helped keep the delegate prices low: specifically to ITN Productions, Red Bee Media and HID.
Thank you again to all those who attended- especially our esteemed roster of speakers, moderators and panellists- we hope to see you all again in Coventry at the Ricoh Arena for the Major Events Summit: 9th/10th June.
Until then, I hope the events you are working on are safer, more efficient and more engaging- thanks to the connections you made and lessons you learned in Lausanne.
I hope the report brings back some fond memories, and is a catalyst for you to raise the business development bar…or, more likely, to follow up on that conversation in the bar!
Sporting regards,
Andy Rice, COO

We have a number of commercial partners, hosts and stakeholders. It can be challenging at times and often we can have conflict between partners. Some of our biggest challenges are largely
political and social, for example plastic bottles and sustainability challenges from key Olympic Tokyo 2020 partners.

Engaging volunteers and cities to create a social legacy is key. Creating
a network to encourage people and events to come back to our city is
very important.
DAY 2: PANEL FOUR THE OPPORTUNITIES AND THREATS
PROVIDED BY OTT
CRAIG HEPBURN, HEAD OF DIGITAL MARKETING, UEFA
Take a human approach to affecting digital transformation. Times are changing and audiences want instant content. NGB’s don’t always have the tech experience, it’s important to identify talent
in-house, recruit expertise and bring that talent in-house. Target effective content, if you put disruptive content in front of yours then you’ll lose viewers and engagement.

DAY 2: PANEL FIVEINNOVATIVE WAYS FOR FEDERATIONS TO
MAXIMISE REVENUES
MATT COLSTON, SPORTS ADVISORY, EY
Rights holders need to get on the front foot and understand the value of their event in order to grow
commercial impact. Understanding your consumer in and out of the stadium can be very valuable, sports starts
when you step off the plane, not just a stadia experience. Value tourism and increase dollar spend.
JOAQUIN MARTINEZ, LAGARDERE SPORTS
Importance of first point of contact.
It is important to both cross sell and up sell to capture a bigger audience. Of course it’s valuable to capture data, but it’s more important to understand
how to commercialise that data.
NIGEL GEACH, VICE CHAIR, EUROPEAN SPONSORSHIP ASSOCIATION
Innovation of sports sponsorship.
Sponsorship has evolved over the last twenty years, there are more partnerships and more opportunities to work with rights holders. If you can extend your
core business like Volleyball, then rights holders can expand their offering also. E-sports has a massive impact, fans can feel and touch what the sport is
about.

DAY 2: PANEL SIXPAST AND FUTURE EVENTS
HILARY ATKINSON, OLYMPIC GAMES DIRECTOR, FIH
It’s important to make participation in real sport as cool as e-sports. You have to evolve
and change as a sport, and learn how to become more attractive to your audience.
ALEXANDRE MOLINA, DIRECTOR OF EVENTS, F1
There are political factors to spend. Cities need to spend money on other investments,
but they must weigh up other factors; the impact events have on generating business,
tourism, and total spend in the city.
MATT EVANS, EVENTS MANAGER, WORLD ROWING
It is important to integrate all modern elements into sport. It’s all about capturing the athlete
journey, utilising content to create a real sense of touch and feel of your sport for maximum fan
engagement.

FRANK VAN DER PEET, MANAGER BIG EVENTS, CITY OF HAGUE
Excellent opportunity for networking and advice is freely given.
BOB O’BRIEN, SOS GLOBAL EXPRESS
Good summit, high quality of speakers, great atmosphere.
RYAN MAXWELL, EXTREME INTERNATIONAL
Good range of IF’s attending. informative presentations and the right amount of
networking opportunities.
LINDSEY IMPETT, LACROSS
More female representation and more balance between number of Federations represented v industry elements. appreciate this is as the
summit is in its growth years.
HILARY ATKINSON, OLYMPIC GAMES DIRECTOR, INTERNATIONAL HOCKEYSPORTS
Speed meet sessions next time would be great.
ERIC ORENGO, EUFA
The programme was very full and I felt that there should have been more time for some of the
sessions in order to maximise the information exchange.
IGNACIO SORIANO, FEDERATION INTERNATIONAL BASKETBALL
Response: We here at MEI are very sensitive to the need for gender balance. We were very
disappointed at the number of female panellists and delegates - it was not for lack of trying! We are committed to a deeper strategic approach to improving the number of female representatives in the room and are even considering a discount
for females, but would that be sexist? We
Response: We will get more feedback from the Federations on this - it may be that it is not
something that they would be prepared to take in.
Response: We pride ourselves on over-delivering. Sometimes we pack in to much
content. It’s clearly important to get the balance between presentations, discussions, questions
from the floor and networking. We are constantly reviewing this.
