alarming growth of the global population, an increased demand and steady

supply, along with unpredictable weather, have led to a rise in the prices of

secondary raw materials.

Pathway to modernization and trade promotion

The demand drivers are hygiene, quality and food safety issues. However,

significant investment is required to achieve high standards. The NSSO data

says 6.4% of rural Indians eat mutton, 21.7% eat chicken, 26.5% consume fish

while 29.2% eat eggs, but it is showing upward trend of late. This shows the

huge potential for expansion.

The meat industry is likely to grow at a CAGR of 8% over the next five years. The

processed meat industry is growing even much faster at about 20%. There is

huge demand for Halal meat, the market for which is growing rapidly

throughout the world specifically in the Middle East. Besides India, Brazil,

America and Australia have substantial market share in Halal meat industry.

Halal meat by-products in India include Casings, Crushed Bone Grist, Gelatin,

Sausages, leather and other products. Among the focus areas for promotion of

Halal meat production and trade are pre- and post-slaughtering procedures to

ensure quality, livestock management and slaughterhouse automation and

well considered strategies to increase Halal meat's share in global market.

Equally important are use of modern machinery, packaging solutions and tools

as well as training. Per capita consumption in domestic market and increase in

global demand have opened up new opportunities for Indian meat, fisheries

and poultry industry. There is a need to adopt modern technologies in

production, preservation, processing, value addition and consumer packaging

apart from more investments in this sector particularly in the areas of

upgradation of abattoirs, slaughter houses and other processing facilities.

The Union Agriculture Ministry's Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying &

Fisheries is focusing on increasing the animal population and productivity as a

thrust area, offering financial assistance to the organizations. The Ministry of

Food Processing Industries has its own programs to increase dairy processing

and value added products to target export markets. This would facilitate India

to achieve its potential of becoming a “Food Factory of the World”.

MeatTech Asia 2019

Keeping in view the scope and demand for Indian meat and meat products thworld over, Media Today Group is organizing 6 MeatTech Asia 2019 at BIEC,

Indian Meat Industry

India has a good potential for meat production because of large livestock

population. In India, the largest meat producer species is poultry followed by

bovines, goat and sheep. Indian meat industry plays a very important role in

providing nutritional security to ever growing population, livelihood support to

rural masses and creating employment opportunities for youth.

The meat industry production is estimated at 6.3 million tones and is ranked

fifth in the world's meat production, accounting for 3% of the total meat

production - a total of 220 million tones. With the volume of meat products

produced in the country, the question of methods of increasing shelf life

becomes extremely pertinent. Amid the advent of technology, sustainability of

food items has always been of priority to the population.

Meat exported from India is risk-free, lean, nutritious and competitively priced

meat. It has resulted in consistent, high compound growth rate in the export

volumes. The importers of Indian meat are Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand,

Australia, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the major

exporter of buffalo meat followed by Punjab and Maharashtra.

The major constraints in hygienic meat production are lack of hygienic facilities

in slaughter houses, poor transport and cold storage facilities. Measures should

be taken to increase the meat production efficiency using the improved

management practices. There is huge potential in this sector for economic

development of country through increasing exports so the policy makers

should adopt critical measures at every stage to encourage and support this

vital segment of the Indian agriculture.

Production of meat is largely an unorganized activity in India. Meat industry

needs to aim high to grow at rapid rate to meet ever raising demand in domestic

market and to tap the export potential.

Global Demand

The highest growth of meat consumption is expected from the Asia-Pacific and

Latin American regions, because of changing diet patterns, urbanization,

population and economic growth. Limited availability of land and water

resources for animal feed production, and increasing use of these resources for

food are increasing the demand for animal feed in the global meat industry.

Countries such as India, China, Brazil, and Russia are among the world's fastest

growing economies. However, meat consumption patterns are expected to

remain significantly different in various parts of the world because of cultural,
