The California Postsecondary EducationSystem
The California postsecondary education systemconsists of a full range of public and private schools.
The University of California System (UC)The top State research university is the University ofCalifornia, which consists of 10 campuses includingBerkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Merced,Riverside, San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Barbaraand Santa Cruz, and is considered the world’s finestpublic university system. The UC system offers accessto students from the top 12.5% of California highschool graduates and provides most graduate studiesand research.
The California State University System (CSU)The CSU is the largest university system in the U.S.and is intended for the top one-third of Californiahigh school students. The CSU system consists of 23campuses. The universities within the CSU areprimarily for undergraduate education, althoughmany of the larger campuses offer master’s degreesand since 2007, the CSU is authorized to awarddoctorall degrees in Education (Ed.D.).
The California Community College SystemThe California Community College System has 109campuses and provides first- and second-year coursesonly, leading to Associate of Arts or Associate ofScience Degrees. Students can then transfer to theCSU or UC system to complete their third and fourthyears and receive their bachelor’s degree.
Private EducationCalifornia has hundreds of private colleges anduniversities, including many religious and special-purpose institutions.
AccreditationAccreditation is a certification of the academicquality of an institution of higher learning. TheWestern Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC)is responsible for the accreditation of public andprivate universities and colleges in California.
Applying for Undergraduate Admission It is difficult for international students to enter theUniversity of California, Riverside, as first-yearundergraduate students. Students must haveexceptional high school grades, meet the languagerequirement and have successfully completed the SATexams before graduating from their home country. Most undergraduate students attend a Californiacommunity college for the first two years and thentransfer to the UC or CSU systems, or to anothercollege or university for degree completion. There aremany advantages of studying in the communitycollege system for the first two years. The programsand courses are of high quality. The entrancerequirements are lower and students are not requiredto take the SAT exams. Courses can easily betransferred to the UC or CSU system or to anyuniversity in the U.S. Courses are also less expensive inthe community colleges than at a UC or CSU.
Applying for Graduate ProgramsAdmission to graduate programs at the Universityof California, Riverside, is highly competitive.Students must meet strict admission requirementsand since the number of qualified applicants mayexceed the number of places available, many well-qualified candidates may not be admitted.
University and College Advising ServicesThe UC Riverside International Education Programsprovides information and advising services to IEPstudents wishing to pursue undergraduate orgraduate study at any institution in the U.S. There isno additional charge for these services. IEP alsoorganizes a university and college fair each sessionwhere local and pathway partner institutions areinvited to talk about their academic programs.
