Introduction
As Nigeria approaches 60, the urgency for increased youth employment and food security is more mission critical like never before. Given her fast-growing population, and the recessive economy, a sustainable plan to harness the energy of youth fro deployment across industrial sectors is key at this time.
By 2020, youths ( 35 downwards) will constitute 50% - 60% of the Nigerian population, which is a huge demography for change by any measure. If left untapped, opportunity losses will occur with expressions in unemployment, youth restiveness, and rural-urban migration in exacerbation of food security and poverty levels. The present apathy to agricultural participation by youth is a threat to food supply, which at the moment are mostly shouldered by rural women in Agriculture.
Hence, YESAA is a youth-targeted project designed with a development objective to attract and encourage youths to agriculture. It is an initiative in support of the agricultural promotion policy of the Government, and roadmap for success in agr icultural development.
Nigeria needs the involvement and commitment of youths with multidisciplinary backgrounds to agribusiness. We must drive and train for improved productivity in agriculture, economic growth and food security.
Ultimately, the inclusion and gearing of youths for intense participation in agriculture and agribusiness is definitely a great way forward.
2
Employment and entrepreneurial opportunities for youth in developing countries and economically stagnant rural areas, remain limited, poorly remunerated, and of poor quality.
The challenges faced by youths in participating or succeeding in agribusiness include insufficient access to knowledge and information, limited access to land and financial services, difficulties accessing green jobs, restrictive access to markets, and little involvement in policy dialogue.
YESAA , with the support of strategic agribusiness partners and sponsors, seeks to address challenges towards creating gainful employment and income generation for the youth in Nigeria, through agriculture and agribusiness. It will deliver mindset-changing and capacity-building for youths to be self-sufficient and serviceable to Nigeria.
The programme will ensure that youths have access to the right information via integrated training approaches that respond to the agricultural needs of a developing and growing country. It will organize and bring youths together to improve their capacities for collective action. Youth-specific projects and supports have been identified, which will be effective in providing the extra push needed for youths to participate in the agricultural sector.
