Maes tras Sbaeneg-Basgeg Ravel i’w glywed yn glir yn y darn ecsotig, Rapsodie Espagnole ac yn ei ddarn cerddorfaol Bolero, gwaith a oedd i fod i gael ei berfformio’n wreiddiol gan gwmni bale Ida Rubinstein ym 1928. Darn prawf Conservatoire ar gyfer y clarinet oedd Rhapsody yn y lle cyntaf, tra bod Pictures at an Exhibition gan Mussorgsky, a oedd yn wreiddiol ar gyfer unawdydd piano, yn cael ei weddnewid gan drefniant ardderchog Ravel i’r ffurf yr ydym yn ei hadnabod heddiw.

Ravel’s Spanish-Basque heritage is heard to striking effect in the exotically-charged Rapsodie Espagnole and in his orchestral showpiece Bolero, a work originally intended for performance by Ida Rubinstein’s ballet troupe in 1928. Debussy’s Rhapsody began life as a Conservatoire test piece for clarinet, while Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, originally for solo piano, was given new life by Ravel’s magnificent arrangement in which form it is better known.

Caiff gwrachod gwyllt ar Noson Gŵyl Ifan eu dwyn i gof yn wych yn y darn dieflig A Night on the Bare Mountain gan Mussorgsky. Mae Concerto Piano Rhif 2 ardderchog Tchaikovsky, nad yw’n cael ei berfformio’n aml iawn, yn dyner ac eto’n derfysglyd, ac mae’n cynnwys un o’r symudiadau telynegol mwyaf hudol y repertoire concerto. Mae cerddoriaeth yn llawn cyffro ac angerdd Slafig yn treiddio trwy’r symffoni raglennol hon a ysbrydolwyd gan gerdd ddramatig Byron, Manfred.

Cavorting witches on Midsummer’s night are brilliantly evoked in Mussorgsky’s devilish A Night on the Bare Mountain. Tchaikovsky’s sumptuous, yet rarely performed Second Piano Concerto is by turns tender and turbulent, and inhabits one of the most serenely lyrical movements in the concerto repertoire. Music of fevered intensity and Slavic passion permeate his programmatic symphony inspired by Byron’s dramatic poem Manfred.

St David’s Hall International Concert Series 2017/18Cyfres Cyngherddau Rhyngwladol Neuadd Dewi Sant 2017/18

Bydd yr ensemble lleisiol hudol hwn dychwelyd i Neuadd Dewi Sant gyda cherddoriaeth amrywiol a nodweddiadol tu hwnt. Gan adlewyrchu traddodiad corawl y Dadeni hyd at yr oes fodern, mae hon yn wledd gerddorol ac amrywiol dros ben. Y Wrth wraidd y cyngerdd mae disgleirdeb Palestrina a Poulenc; mae eu gwaith corawl wedi’i recordio gan The Sixteen.

This stylish vocal ensemble makes a welcome return to St David’s Hall with a wonderfully varied and distinctive sackful of music. Drawing on the rich choral tradition from the Renaissance to the modern era, this musical hamper is rich in variety. Central to this concert is the enduring radiance of Palestrina and Poulenc whose choral works have been beautifully recorded by The Sixteen.

3:00pmSunday 17 December 2017Dydd Sul 17 Rhagfyr 2017

Mae rhamantiaeth Almaenig a synhwyrusrwydd telynegol yn cydgyffwrdd yn y gyfres o bedair o ganeuon gwefreiddiol yma gan Gustav Mahler a’u sgorau cyfoethog. Yn wrthgyferbyniad llwyr, mae Symffoni Rhif 7 Shostakovich yn atseinio â rhythmau rhyfel. Daeth y Leningrad yn symbol o herfeiddioldeb Rwsia pan chwaraeodd cerddorfa arwrol a oedd yn hanner llwgu y symffoni hon drwy uwch-seinydd i’r lluoedd Almaenig cyfagos yn ystod un o’r gwarchaeau mwyaf angheuol erioed ym mis Awst 1942.

German romanticism and a lyric sensibility rub shoulders in four richly-scored and moving songs by Gustav Mahler. By sharp contrast, Shostakovich’s Seventh Symphony resonates with the rhythms of war. The Leningrad became a symbol of Russian defiance when in August 1942 a half-starved and heroic orchestra played it through loudspeakers to the surrounding German forces in one of the deadliest sieges in history.

Mae Florilegium yn un o’r ensemblau offerynnau y mae galw mawr amdanynt heddiw. Mae eu recordiad diweddar o Goncertos Brandenburg wedi cael llawer o glod. Wedi’u cyflwyno i Fargraf Brandenburg yn 1721, mae’r darnau gwych yma ymhlith gwaith gorau JS Bach ac yn glasuron o’r cyfnod Baroc. Mae pob concerto wedi’i sgorio ar gyfer cyfuniadau o offerynnau gwahanol ac mae athrylith Bach yn amlwg iawn yn rhannau i unawdwyr ac i ensemble.

Florilegium is one of today’s most sought-after period instrument ensembles and has recently recorded the Brandenburg Concertos to great acclaim. Dedicated to the Margrave of Brandenburg in 1721, these wonderful pieces are amongst JS Bach’s most uplifting works and are classics of the Baroque era. Each concerto is scored for a different instrumental combination and in the brilliance of their solo and ensemble writing Bach’s genius is paramount.

Mae Agorawd Egmont, Beethoven, bob amser yn llwyddo i greu argraff, ac mae ei chyffro tanbaid wedi diddanu cynulleidfaoedd ers ei pherfformiad cyntaf yn Fiena yn 1810. Mae’r Concerto i’r Feiolin gan Mendelssohn yn waith sy’n llawn gwreiddioldeb, gyda cherddoriaeth benigamp sy’n ysgogi angerdd, gorawen a meistrolaeth. A hithau’n llawn o alawon cofiadwy, mae Symffoni “New World” Dvořák yn adlewyrchu holl egni ei brofiadau Americanaidd yn Efrog Newydd, ac yn ein hatgoffa cymaint y mae’r cyfansoddwr yn hiraethu am ei gartref ym Mohemia.

Beethoven’s Overture to Egmont never fails to impress, and its blazing intensity has delighted audiences ever since its Viennese premiere in 1810. Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto is a work of breathtaking originality packed with wonderful tunes that generate passion, rapture and virtuosity. With memorable tunes Dvořák’s “New World” Symphony pulses with energy drawn from his American experiences in New York and evokes the composer’s longing for his native Bohemia.

Ac yntau’n enwog am ei ddehongliadau dadlennol o waith Beethoven, bydd Syr Roger Norrington yn arwain SWR Cerddorfa Symffoni Stuttgart mewn cyfres o berfformiadau tanbaid o dri darn o waith a gyfansoddwyd yn ystod degawd cyntaf y 18ed ganrif. Mae’r Agorawd afieithus hon yn deillio o unig sgôr bale lawn a gyfansoddwyd gan Beethoven, tra bod rhannau symffonig y Concerto i’r Piano Rhif 3 yn cynnig rhagflas o’r Eroica – gwaith epig a newidiodd cerddoriaeth symffonig am byth.

Acclaimed for his revelatory Beethoven, Sir Roger Norrington directs the SWR Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart in what promises to be sizzling performances of three works written in the first decade of the 19th century. The exuberant Overture belongs to Beethoven’s only full length ballet score, while the symphonic proportions of the Third Piano Concerto anticipate the epic scale of the Eroica – a work that changed symphonic music for all time.

O’r Clasurol i’r Rhamantaidd, mae’r rhaglen hon yn cyfosod cerddoriaeth delynegol ac ynni cyffrous Concerto Piano Rhif 1 Beethoven gyda drama a chyffro Pumed Symffoni Mahler. Wedi’i hadeiladu dros bum symudiad, mae ei thaith emosiynol o’r tywyllwch i’r goleuni yn cynnwys ymdeithgan angladdol, Scherzo gwyllt ac Adagietto hudolus a ddaeth yn enwog ar ôl ei defnyddio yn ffilm Visconti, Death in Venice. Mae ei diweddglo sicr a chadarn yn un o’r symudiadau gorau a gyfansoddodd Mahler erioed.

Traversing Classical to Romantic, this programme juxtaposes the lyrical sweep and exhilarating energy of Beethoven’s First Piano Concerto with the gripping drama of Mahler’s Fifth Symphony. Built over five movements, its emotional journey from darkness to light encompasses a funeral march, a wild Scherzo and a ravishing Adagietto subsequently made famous for its use in Visconti’s film Death in Venice. Its life-affirming finale is one of the most glorious movements in all Mahler.

A hithau’n uchel ei pharch fel dehonglydd ar waith Bach, mae’n wych gweld Angela Hewitt yn dychwelyd i berfformio un o weithiau allweddell aruthrol y cyfansoddwr. Wedi’u henwi ar ôl yr harpsicordydd Johann Gottlied Goldberg a’u hysgrifennu yn ôl pob sôn ar gyfer ei feistr di-gwsg, mae Amrywiadau Goldberg yn dangos doniau Bach ar eu gorau. O thema unigol yn y bas, mae cyfres o amrywiadau gwych yn ymagor, gan ddangos dyfeisgarwch ac amgyffred emosiynol syfrdanol.

Highly acclaimed as a Bach interpreter, Angela Hewitt makes a welcome return to perform one of the composer’s monumental keyboard works. Named after the harpsichordist Johann Gottlied Goldberg and written supposedly for his insomniac master, the Goldberg Variations represents Bach at the peak of his powers. From a single bass theme, a set of brilliant variations unfold, breathtaking in their resourcefulness and emotional reach.

Ugain mlynedd yn gynharach, cwblhaodd Schumann ei unig Goncerto i’r Piano ar gyfer ei wraig, Clara. Mae ei huodledd, ei goethder cerddorol a’i fywiogrwydd yn sicrhau ei fod yn llawn haeddu ei le yn y repertoire cyfoes. Yn gwbl wahanol, mae Pumed Symffoni Beethoven, sy’n agor gyda’i rhythm cnocio enwog, yn un o ddarnau o waith mwyaf dramatig a phoblogaidd y cyfansoddwr.

Heady sensuality and physical longing saturate the Prelude and Liebestod from Wagner’s operatic masterpiece first performed in Munich in 1865. Twenty years earlier Schumann completed his only Piano Concerto designed for his wife Clara. Its eloquence, lyrical refinement and playfulness ensure its regular place in the repertoire. By contrast, Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, launched by its famous knocking rhythm, is one of the composer’s most dramatic and recognised works.

Yn ôl y sôn, yr ysbrydoliaeth ar gyfer telynegiaeth hudol y Concerto i’r Feiolin Rhif 1 (1917) oedd “golygfeydd hyfryd, gwyllt a gwyryfol” mynyddoedd yr Ural. Ugain mlynedd yn ddiweddarach, roedd Cantata for the 20th Anniversary of the Revolution wedi’i gadw mewn drôr tan farwolaeth Stalin. Mae’r gwaith hwn, nad yw’n cael ei berfformio’n aml iawn, wedi’i ysgrifennu ar gyfer grymoedd corawl a cherddorfaol anferthol gan gynnwys band acordion, clychau larwm, seiren a seinydd.

The dreamy lyricism of Prokofiev’s First Violin Concerto from 1917 is said to have been inspired by the “wild, virginal and beautiful scenery” of the Ural mountains. Twenty years later, his Cantata for the 20th Anniversary of the Revolution was kept hidden in a drawer until the death of Stalin. This seldom performed work is written for gargantuan choral and orchestral forces and includes an accordion band, alarm bells, siren and speaker.

7:30pmFriday 18 May 2018Dydd Gwener 18 Mai 2018

Mae cerddoriaeth bale Prokofiev, Cinderella, yn fywiog ac yn ffraeth, yn bigog a siarp weithiau, yn rhamantaidd a chyfoethog ar adegau eraill. Mae Dadl y Chwiorydd Hyll, Walts Cinderella ac Awr Ganol Nos ymhlith yr uchafbwyntiau. Mae Concerto Piano Grieg yntau’n gyfoethog a melodaidd, ei agoriad ffrwydrol a’i ddarnau mwy telynegol ill dau’n adnabyddus iawn. Egni di-baid, ar y llaw arall, sy’n nodweddi Seithfed Symffoni Beethoven.

Prokofiev’s colourful ballet score, Cinderella, is chock full of witty, vibrant music, by turns spiky and lushly romantic. The Quarrel of the Ugly Sisters, Cinderella’s Waltz and the memorable Midnight Hour are among the Suite’s highlights. No less richly melodic is Grieg’s evergreen Piano Concerto, renowned for its explosive opening bars and its tender lyricism. By contrast, Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony hurtles along with boundless energy.

Mae Agorawd operatig boblogaidd Strauss yn frith o alawon disglair, tra bod Concerto Feiolin Rhif 1 Max Bruch yn gampwaith Rhamantaidd sy’n enwog am ei foneddigeiddrwydd a’i frwdfrydedd rhamantaidd. Yn yr un modd, mae darn Saint-Saëns yn waith o danbeidrwydd cerddorol i’r feiolin ond, emosiynau trist yw sail symffoni olaf Tchaikovsky. Mae ei ddarn olaf, a gwblhawyd ychydig wythnosau cyn iddo farw ym 1893, yn dwyn ynghyd enghreifftiau o’i gerddoriaeth fwyaf cofiadwy, y difrifol a’r mawreddog.

Sparkling tunes infuse Strauss’s much-loved operatic Overture, while Max Bruch’s evergreen First Violin Concerto is a Romantic showpiece celebrated for its nobility and romantic fervour. Musical fireworks colour Saint-Saëns’s showcase for the violin but, darker emotions underpin Tchaikovsky’s final symphony. His farewell to the form completed just a few weeks before his death in 1893 brings together some of his most memorable music, both brooding and barnstorming.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENTThe focus of our young people’s programme is of engagement with the creation and sharing of music. Through our Young Composers Scheme and Performance and Composition projects for young people we are using the concerts in the International Concert series as a springboard for projects that benefit the wider community.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENTThe power of music to enrich and deepen enjoyment of life, especially as a way to unify those who may otherwise be isolated by ill health or life limiting conditions is being increasingly documented. St David’s Hall holds weekly Soundworks sessions for adults with learning and physical difficulties taking inspiration from the ICS programme, and is constantly developing and exploring ways ICS concerts can resonate throughout the wider community.

DATBLYGU IEUENCTID Bydd ein rhaglen ar gyfer pobl ifanc yn canolbwyntio ar greu a rhannu cerddoriaeth. Drwy ein Cynllun Cyfansoddwyr Ifanc a’n prosiectau Perfformio a Chyfansoddi ar gyfer pobl ifanc, rydym ni’n defnyddio’r cyngherddau yn rhan o’r gyfres Cyngherddau Rhyngwladol fel sbardun ar gyfer prosiectau a fydd o fudd i’r gymuned ehangach.

YMGYSYLLTU CYMUNEDOLMae tystiolaeth gynyddol i ddangos bod cerddoriaeth yn effeithiol iawn wrth alluogi pobl i fwynhau mwy ar fywyd, yn enwedig fel ffordd o uno’r bobl hynny a all fod wedi’u hynysu gan salwch neu gyflwr sy’n byrhau bywyd. Mae Neuadd Dewi Sant yn cynnal sesiynau Gwaith Sain i oedolion sydd ag anawsterau dysgu a chorfforol, sydd wedi’u hysbrydoli gan y rhaglen ICS, ac mae’n gyson yn datblygu ac yn archwilio ffyrdd y gall cyngherddau ICS apelio at y gymuned ehangach.
