WELCOME

Successful companies in our sector have demonstrated in recent years that both productivity and time-to-market can be increased appreciably without sacrificing time-proven practices provided there is a genuine willingness to embrace change. The changes range from efficient production processes and process chains through systematic standardization and modularization of tools and business processes to workflow-oriented takt-timed production. Many companies operate nowadays as full-service providers and offer their customers support in setting up and running globally distri- buted production sites. Whilst the digitalization of virtually all spheres of life including manufacturing is opening up whole new areas of potential, at the same time, it is presenting enormous challenges which will require a response extending far beyond previous efforts. The concepts developed within “Industry 4.0” must be transformed into concrete solutions and approaches for a “Tool Making 4.0”, thereby paving the way for tangible developments. Long-term commitment and a continuous pro-cess of optimization in all areas will remain vital elements in the drive to meet targets.

Our “Tool Making for the Future” Colloquium is designed to help you to gain an impression of prac-tice-oriented options of implementing these concepts in technology and organization, in digitaliza-tion and in functional product design on the basis of case studies of successful practice from the world of industry and research. Join in discussions with colleagues and experts in your sector and take away information about new developments in our industrial exhibition. We look forward to welcoming you and to engaging in dialogue with you!

THE “EXCELLENCE IN PRODUCTION“ COMPETITION

Competition and Colloquium Partners

The “Excellence in Production“ accolade conferred on the “Tool Maker of the Year“ is the recognized measurement of achievement for companies in the tool and die-pro-ducing industry. The WZL of the RWTH Aachen and the Fraunhofer-Institute for Production Technology IPT have been presenting this award for the past twelve years to the best companies in the German-speaking region.

All of the companies nominated for the final round have demonstrated extremely high performance levels in a fiercely competitive environment and have earned the right to be proud of themselves. The procedure in this competition is that we form an impression of the efficiency of each participating company on the basis

of a comprehensive questionnaire backed up by a scientifically based, practice-tested system of indicators and then compare each of the participants with one another. A team of scientists and engineers visits the premises of the highest-ranking companies, takes a close look at the processes involved in tool and die manufacture and checks outcomes with the figures obtained from comparing indicators. Only then does an independent jury nominate the best companies for the final round and subsequently select the overall winner. The name of the company which will bear the sought-after title “Tool Maker of the Year 2015” will not be revealed until the evening of the award ceremony.

In order to ensure that all participants are given the opportunity to compete on a level playing field, the prize is awarded in a number of categories.

A detailed description of each of the companies nominated will appear on the www.excellence-in-production.de website when the jury has reached a decision.

The competition has been supported by our media partner VDI News and by the trade journal werkzeug&formenbau. The companies Siemens AG, Hasco Hasenclever GmbH & Co.KG and Uddeholms AB were kind enough to provide sponsorship.
