Wild Tales is an enthralling series of six stand alone films that explore the stories of iconic Australian animals and the stand-alone biological and evolutionary factors that link them.

Three of the films show an individual animal; a koala, an emu and an Australian sea lion — and follow their individual tales — as each grows and must confront the realities of survival.

The other three films are broader in terms of content and show how environmental and biological factors connect wildlife. One of the films looks at one of nature’s most remarkable creations — venom. Another shows the diversity of lizards in Australia, while the third looks at how a small nocturnal marsupial, the possum, has conquered the Australian continent.

Each film tells a single story, but combined Wild Tales becomes a series that is as beguiling and diverse as nature itself.

Off the coast of Central Africa lies an isolated island, covered by primeval rainforest and surrounded by dark ocean waters, inhabited by a greater variety of species than nearly any other place on Earth. This terra incognita is called Bioko. The ruler of this realm is one of the world’s least known primate species, the drill. This film explores the secret lives of these animals, including the nesting grounds of various sea turtles and the rugged caldera. We follow Motuku, an alpha male, and his family. The newest member of the group is little Sipoti.

Over the next few years, he will learn the intricacies of the drill society — something researchers will be learning with him as little is known about this monkey species. Perhaps he’ll someday become an alpha and rule over his own rainforest kingdom on the island.

Every animal on the planet is armed with a weapon of some kind. Crocodiles have teeth, jaguars have claws and cheetahs rely on their speed. Predators are the most well-armed, but surprisingly they’re the ones who usually lose. Most hunts end in failure. Foiled by the ingenious defence systems developed by their prey — shells, spines, poison and camouflage honed over the eons.

Other animals battle with their own kind in duels of strength and cunning which determine who will get to reproduce. Some have evolved weapons specifically for these jousting bouts — giant horns, huge noses and brilliant displays of colour. Parents also fight to protect their young. Every animal is highly tuned to its home arena. Whether on the open plains, the depths of the jungle or on the high seas, all are put to the test in the great Animal Arms Race.

It is wild and she it beautiful, it is small and yet so rich in variety. Characterised by mountain ranges, rivers, lakes and forests, this country in the middle of Europe offers a breathtaking array of diverse landscapes: almost 1,500 lakes, over 80 four-thousand-metre peaks, 150 glaciers and a forest that covers almost a third of the country. And they still exist, the spots that promise unsullied nature: gentle hills and rugged cliffs, mysterious moors and mighty waterfalls — they are all important habitats for shy chamois, fragrant alpine roses, wild trout and rare orchids. Time to discover, explore and marvel at these.

Untamed Switzerland is an expedition into the nature reserves of the animal and plant world, but also the discovery of myths and legends of the respective regions.

Modern Dinosaurs explores New Zealand’s wildlife and extraordinary fossil record. Over six episodes, we’ll learn why creatures here are so unique. Each episode is led by scientists and adventurers who take us to remote, spectacular locations: New Zealand’s tuatara is a living fossil.

How did it survive when dinosaurs became extinct? The Kiwi; how did a flightless bird find itself on islands in the middle of the ocean? New Zealand’s dramatic landscape has been violently forged, creating environments in which unique species evolved. We’ll also be exploring the incredibly different landscapes and wildlife of Australia, New Zealand’s nearest neighbour and to which it was once attached. Modern Dinosaurs considers evolution over millennia: how New Zealand was created and how it is changing. What will the future bring for today’s animals?

Wild Workers3 x 50’Wildlife + Nature

Each day as we head to work, another day in the office or wherever our business takes us, few if any give a single thought to the billions of Wild Workers who day after day toil to keep our planet in shape. Yet without the vast herds who graze the open grasslands, the countless armies of ants and termites, the unseen and silent diggers that help to keep the soils fertile, our world would be a different place. The wild workers are at work in the oceans, as well as the forests and plains — in fact everywhere. Some are at work to build the foundations that help to maintain the rhythms of life. Others craft carefully built and planned homes. While others are engineers who shape their worlds, and ours.

In three gripping episodes, Wild Workers tells the stories of how our world is shaped and organized, often without our knowledge.

The moon — since humans have existed on Earth, it has been our nocturnal companion. It still fascinates us more than any other celestial body. Its attraction has inspired artists to create masterpieces and pushed science so far that we left our planet for the first time. The century old vision of men on the moon became reality — in 1969, two Apollo astronauts entered our next cosmic neighbour. 50 years after the first rendezvous with Mrs. Luna, humans want to go back. And this time, we come to stay. It’s about time to get to know our nearest neighbour and solve some of its riddles.

In three cinematic essays, we dedicate ourselves to the magic of the moon, tell stories of this long relationship between man and moon, a love story that can still come up with surprising twists today.

We take a journey through past visions of the heavens from all over the world, and from the dawn of civilisation to the recent past. From hunter-gatherers to Edwin Hubble, we’ll see the myriad of ways that we have observed and chronicled the movements of the heavens. And with a cast of expert historians and astronomers, we explain the science behind the phenomena that our ancestors sought to explain through mythology.

Throughout the series, we use cutting-edge animation to demonstrate our ever-evolving understanding of how the universe works and our place in an ever-expanding cosmos.

Water: a chemical substance unlike any other, able to change its properties quickly and frequently. The water contained in a single raindrop has been around for billions of years: it may have been part of rivers and oceans, expanded in ice reservoirs, evaporated to form clouds, hit the ground as rain or snowflakes, and percolated through thick layers of bedrock. A substance without which life as we know it wouldn’t exist. We’re even made of it: 60 % of the human body consists of water. Yet our idea of what water actually is, where it came from, how it shapes our planet remains sketchy at best. This is a unique exploration of water and its impact on Earth, following scientists on the cutting-edge of research the world over.

Adventurous, informative, stunning and entertaining: a revelatory film that captivates and enthrals its viewers.

The Power of Fire — Our Earth is burning1 x 50’Science + Knowledge

In the summer of 2018, heat and months of drought caused uncontrolled wildfire worldwide. Is the drought a foretaste of the climate of tomorrow? Fires are breaking out in places where nobody expects them — like this year in Sweden.

Climate scientists and fire researchers are looking for ways to counter the growing fire risk. In Spain, scientists are testing a model that uses cypresses as green fire walls. In Germany, a unique system for early fire detection has been developed. “Firewatch” is a sensitive sensor system, a thousand times more precise than the human eye, that can detect smoke even miles away. The mission “Firebird” from the German Aerospace Center has sent two satellites into space that detect thermal events on Earth with infrared cameras. Is that enough to effectively fight fire in the future? What else can we do?

Construction Fails exhibits catastrophic failures from building sites around the world, and shows the danger of ever-growing modern construction.

Cranes topple, structures crumble, huge machines go hay-wire — even professionals make mistakes, and sometimes disaster is unavoidable. Gathering from building sites all over the globe to show failure of all shapes and sizes, we dive into the mechanics and causes for unmitigated calamity.

Construction Fails explores just how and why these accidents occur, and explores the extent of the damage. Skipping safety inspections, ignoring building codes, and poor planning are just some of the causes for these disasters but all disasters come at a high cost. From small propane tank explosions — to runaway bulldozers — to entire projects crumbling to dust, we show what happens when Construction Fails!

We live in a world that our ancestors would barely recognise. Around the globe, landscapes are re-formed, hostile environments tamed at speeds, depths and heights that would have left our forebears breathless. From the everyday to the spectacular, we have been to the moon, created imaginary worlds for fun, and to save lives — peered back billions of years to glimpse the origins of our universe. Even sent robots to explore the far reaches of the solar system. Driving all these achievements is humankind’s extraordinary gift for invention.

In this series, we look at the successes and the failures, the brilliant ideas, and some ... well not so brilliant. This series celebrates the million ways our Great Inventions have transformed our world.

Magic Moments of the Stone Age traces the amazing journey of mankind to civilization and its spread throughout the world.

The film presents the key inventions that enabled humans to survive in their environment and to shape it according to their needs. It all began two and a half million years ago in a fertile valley in East Africa. There, the still apelike ancestors of homo sapiens shaped stones to cut the flesh from animal carcasses. The invention of the hand axe was the first magic moment of the Stone Age. It marked the start of an incredible journey along the path to civilization. Meat provided extra protein and thus enhanced the development of the human brain. This was the pre requisite for another magic moment that took place about a million years later: the taming of fire, immortalized by the Greeks in the legend of Prometheus.

Tanks are killing machines designed to destroy. Since their invention at the beginning of the 20th century, they have also been a solid element in the omnipotent fantasies of state leaders and dictators. For the past 100 years, they have undoubtedly been the backbone of every land army.

The huge vehicles have long since found their way into global culture — whether as a monument, in films or on billboards. Tanks have made history and have themselves become part of the story. But why were they even developed? How and why did they become triumphant? And, in the face of remotely controlled drones and airborne wars, have they become obsolete?

The history of tanks is diverse! It’s a story of technology, psychology, culture — and people. Tanks are weapons and symbols at the same time.

As World War II drew to a close, German cities were reduced to rubble in Allied bombing raids. The Luftwaffe was no longer able to cope with the overwhelming air superiority of the Allied forces.

In a desperate response, the German engineer Erich Bachem developed the Bachem Ba 349 Natter (“Viper”), a rocket-driven vertical takeoff plane intended for interceptor duties to protect the civilian population and point targets. The Natter was far ahead of its time, integrating state-of-the-art technologies and manufacturing processes that are still used in the aerospace industry today. Tests ran successfully and the world’s first vertical takeoff of a manned rocket-powered aircraft took place shortly before the end of the war in Stetten am kalten Markt, Swabia. However, the experiment proved fatal for test pilot Lothar Sieber.

Europe in the 1920s and 1930s — a continent licking its wounds after the devastation of World War l, on the brink of economic crisis and jolted by streams of refugees as a consequence of revolutions and civil war, marked by the refusal to take in these desperate people: a fertile breeding ground for dissent with the fragile new democracies and the rise of authoritarian regimes. There are striking similarities between then and now — the rise of the far right, the turn of democracies to “illiberal” regimes, the shaky foundations of our financial system.

Can the past hold warnings for the present? This series unpicks the complex sequence of events that boosted a new administration and allowed the unfolding of violence and brutality on an unbelievable scale. It’s a look at history with direct relevance to the world today.

The collapse of Yugoslavia in the 20th century was the result of a multitude of wars and conflicts that plagued Southeast Europe for over a hundred years. The appalling cruelties of the past still linger in many hearts and minds in large parts of the region, resulting in ongoing violent confrontation, one of the reasons for the continued deployment of the UN blue helmet soldiers. For some people, it is impossible to forget the bloody past.

This documentary series gets to the bottom of the causes of the conflicts and wars. The statements of contemporary witnesses and international experts assist the investigation of the south eastern crisis. It is an examination of the genesis of the state, the era of dictator Tito, the Jugoslav wars of the 1990s, as well as the influence of the past on the present.

To many, Columbus is still the man who discovered America. Yet, there had been others before him. The Viking Leif Eriksson, who around 1,000 AD became the first European to set foot on American soil. A medieval Welsh Prince named Madoc supposed to have built fortified places along the Ohio River. And a King from West-African Mali, who is said to have used his immeasurable riches to finance a gigantic fleet, 200 years before Columbus.

As we follow their tracks through ancient texts and documents, sifting legend from myth with the help of up-to-date archaeological research, it becomes abundantly clear that Columbus did not venture into the unknown. The master mariner himself was an ardent collector of maps and nautical data, and he knew that there was land to the west and that others had preceded him. This is their story.

Like nothing else, castles represent the Middle Ages. They were economic centres, fortified homes and sites of countless battles. Yet, what was life like behind the walls of these bastions of power?

Part 1 of our documentary follows their development from simple wooden fortifications to the most elaborate strongholds and residences of knights and emperors. It takes us into their bed chambers as well as into their latrines, into their kitchens and stables. Archaeologists and historians dispel many of the myths and legends that surround them even today.

Part 2 examines their military function from the 11th to the 16th century. When the enemy was at their gates, they had to withstand battering rams, catapults and sapping which called for ever new solutions by their defenders until, finally, large-calibre cannons spelt their end.

The ritual burial of animal mummies is one of the last unsolved mysteries of Ancient Egypt. An international team of archeologists and researchers led by Mélanie Flossmann-Schütze explored the Tuna el-Gebel animal catacomb.

The film accompanies the researchers during their expeditions into the underground galleries in which hundreds of thousands of embalmed animals are stored. Very little written testimony about the cult of animal mummies has been preserved. The team is collecting evidence to back up millennia-old suspicions that the priests of Antiquity swindled believers on a massive scale. CT scans have revealed many “fake” mummies that contain only fabric and wood. In England, the researchers have come across a modern era scandal involving Egyptian animal mummies that were used — in huge numbers — as fertilizer in gardens.

Like the Ark of the Covenant and the Graal, the Holy Lance is one of the sacred relics of Christianity. Mentioned in the Gospel of John, it is known as the weapon used by Roman legionary Longinus to pierce Christ’s side after his crucifixion. “Blood and water” came out of the injury — a phenomenon considered to be a miracle. The Lance became one of the most coveted relics of the Passion of the Christ. According to the legend, whoever possesses it becomes invincible and capable of ruling the world. Throughout history, the Lance have been sought after by many ambitious leaders: Emperor Constantine, Napoleon, Barbarossa, Hitler…

The Mysteries of Lourdes Miracles investigates the unexplained phenomena or scientific fact behind the notion of ‘miracles.’ What constitutes a miracle? Can they be explained by science? And how does the Catholic Church officially acknowledge them?

In order to understand better what some people call divine miracles, the film focuses on the world-famous Lourdes grotto. Each year, millions of people come to see Lourdes: it is one of the most visited of all pilgrimage sites. 69 cures still unexplained by science are said to have taken place there over 160 years. The story begins in 1858 when a mysterious woman in white appeared to a 14 year-old girl named Bernadette Soubirous and introduced herself as ‘The Immaculate Conception’…

The documentary investigates Lourdes’ “miraculous” phenomena by taking a scientific and historical perspective.
