Do you have a strong interest in commerce, business, management and an appreciation

of the trading customs of other cultures? Are you also curious to know how to succeed

in foreign markets and keep ahead of the competition? Do you have an insight in

maths and have good English speaking and writing skills? If so, the International

Business and Management Studies (IBMS) programme may be perfect for you. In this

English-language programme, you will learn everything about setting up and managing

a company abroad, marketing strategies and international trade. On successful

completion of the programme you will be awarded the degree of Bachelor of Business

Administration (BBA).

PREPARED FOR THE WORLD OF INTERNATIONAL BUSINESSInternational Business and Management Studies is a four-year, practically-oriented, full-time programme taught in English. You will study in an international atmosphere, with students and lecturers from all over the world. The programme is at Bachelor’s degree level. The programme centres on strategies for entering and dominating foreign markets. A placement abroad and a semester of study abroad form essential components of the programme. After four years, you will have acquired extensive strategic knowledge about foreign markets and the capacity to occupy a management-level position. This position could be in the field of inter national business or Business- to-Business (B2B) service provision.

THIRD AND FOURTH yEARIn the final two years you can add more personal content to your education. You will study at a foreign university for at least one semester. You will take a minor in the other semester of the third year. After that, you will do a placement abroad. You will then complete your studies with a thesis, which will involve researching an international marketing or management issue for a company.

MINORIn the final phase of your programme you can take a minor for one semester. This is an optional programme to broaden or deepen the scope of your studies. You can choose

from the following minors: Inter national Marketing, International Finance, Entrepreneurship, Latin American Business Studies and the ‘continuation minor’. The continuation minor prepares you to take a Master’s degree programme at the University of Amsterdam after graduating in International Business and Management Studies.

yOUR FUTURE CAREERDue to the increasing globalisation of the markets, the demand for internationally-oriented managers is constantly growing. What’s more, with an all-round knowledge of the foreign market, you will have a wide choice of careers. You can get started in

numerous positions with companies and organisations that operate internationally, such as manufacturers, trading companies, banks, market research agencies andmanagement consultancy firms. Of course, you may also choose to start your own business.

yOUR FUTURE BUSINESS CARDPossible work areas may include:

> Business development > Export > International product managing > International marketing > Area sales > International business development > International marketing research > International publicity

AFTER yOUR BACHELOR’S DEGREEIn co-operation with the University of Amsterdam, the International Business School offers you the possibility of moving on to the Master’s degree in Business Studies without delay after completing your Bachelor’s studies. In order to do this, you must have followed the continuation minor or an additional (or partly overlapping) course as well as the general programme. You can, of course, also opt for a different Master’s degree. However, direct continuation at a Dutch research university is usually not possible in such cases.

LOCATIONThe International Business and Management Studies programme is taught at Fraijlemaborg, near the Amsterdam ArenA. This location offers practice-oriented education with a personal approach and an international orientation. Theory forms the basis of the programme – you will begin by studying theory and can later apply this to practical assignments. All students receive structure, class training and individual guidance. Active sports also form part of the programme.

ADMISSIONIn order to be admitted to the International Business and Management Studies programme, you will need to have completed secondary education on a level equivalent to the Dutch havo, vwo or mbo level 4. In some cases, depending on your profile, there may be additional requirements (see ‘Dutch diplomas’).

An increasing number of degree programmes, other programmes and specialisations at the HvA are using study selection interviews. Go to www.hva.nl/study-selection to find out whether that applies to this degree programme as well.

FOREIGN DIPLOMASYou should have completed secondary education at university entrance level with a least a pass in mathematics and preferably also in business studies or accounting. For example: GCSEs with two or more A-levels, International Baccalaureate, Abitur or Fachhochschulreife, Baccalauréat or another diploma equivalent to the Dutch havo, vwo or mbo level 4 diploma. All diplomas will be screened by the HvA School of Economics and Management.

LANGUAGE PROFICIENCyAs English is the language of the programme, we expect our students to have good English-language writing and speaking skills. The minimum overall score required is 6.0 on academic level (IELTS) with no subscore below 5.5 or 550 paper-based / 213 computer-based and 80 internet-based (TOEFL). The test should not be more than 2 years old. Students with a Dutch mbo level 4, havo or vwo diploma and a score in English lower than 7 are advised to take an IELTS test. This will determine whether their level of English is good enough to study in English. Native speakers (students from the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia or New Zealand) and applicants who have successfully undertaken secondary education or post-secondary courses at an accredited institution, where English was the language of instruction, for a minimum of two years, are not required to present any proof of their English proficiency.
