SEATTLE — A gun brought to an elementary school near Seattle in a third-grade boy’s backpack discharged Wednesday, apparently by accident, and critically wounded an 8-year-old girl, police said.

The unidentified child who brought the gun to Armin Jahr Elementary in Bremerton, Wash., was booked into Kitsap County juvenile detention for investigation of unlawful pos-session of a gun, bringing a dangerous weapon to school and third-degree assault.

“At this stage of the investigation, detectives believe the shooting was accidental,” Bremerton police Lt. Peter Fisher said in a statement.

The Venezuelan, who is having his first day in the car this week after Bruno Senna and Valtteri Bottas completed a day each, ended up almost one second clear of the second fastest driver, Michael Schumacher.

The seven-time world champion, driv-ing the new Mercedes W03, set his best time on soft compound Pirelli rubber only a few minutes before Maldonado went fastest.

Sauber driver Kamui Kobayashi was third fastest. He set his time with one hour of the morning remaining, like Schumacher running the soft compound but he later brought the session to a premature end moments before the chequered flag was due to fly after stopping at the exit of Turn 4 on an out-of-fuel run.

McLaren driver Jenson Button was fourth fastest in the MP4-27, lapping a second-and-a-half off Maldonado. He set his time shortly before lunch, running soft rubber. Scuderia Toro Rosso’s Jean-Eric Vergne had his first taste of test action for this week, ending up fifth fastest, two

seconds off the pace, and completed 42 laps of running.

He finished ahead of Felipe Massa, who endured another busy morning of work as Ferrari attempts to get on top of its troubled machine. His programme in-cluded a number of straightline aero runs on start/finish.

Red Bull had a quiet morning, with Mark Webber completing only 26 laps after taking over from Sebastian Vet-tel.

Timo Glock drove the Virgin MVR-02 for the first time since last year’s Brazilian Grand Prix. He focused on tyre evaluation work using each of the four available Pirelli tyres compounds. Glock also triggered a red flag when he spun, but was able to recover to the pits.

Caterham driver Vitaly Petrov ended the morning ninth fastest after suspension problems restricted his running. He ended up a quarter-of-a-second faster that Paul di Resta, whose Force India caused the red flag to be deployed very briefly when he lost part of his engine cover.

DucaTi general manager Fil-ippo Preziosi believes his team has made a step forward after three days of testing at Jerez. Test rider Franco Battaini rode on all three days, focusing on honing the electron-ics and setups of the new 1000cc GP12 bike.

Preziosi said that he was was satisfied that the bike has made a step forward and is keen to give race riders Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden a go on the updated ma-chine at the official Sepang test.

“We were lucky because we had three days with very good weather conditions,” Preziosi said. “And that enabled us to do quite a bit of work. With Franco Battaini, we continued with the test programme that was planned for the test team over the winter, trying some aspects of the electronics that we’ll keep working on with the factory riders at Sepang.

“I think we found out some inter-esting things that we’ll soon confirm with Vale and Nicky in Malaysia, where we’ll also continue working with the bike’s setup.”

Satellite Ducati squads AB Cardion Racing and Pramac Rac-ing were also at Jerez, Karel Abraham and Hector Barbera on riding duties.

“I got to the gym early today, I tried to get into a rhythm,” Paul told reporters of his season-high point to-tal. “I’m not going into games trying to get 30 points. I’m taking whatever the defense is giving me.” Los An-geles trailed 92-91 with about five minutes left, but Denver went ice cold at the Staples Center and were held without a point over a four-minute stretch where the Clippers (20-11) outscored them 8-0.

The Clippers’ Blake Griffin, who will take part in this weekend’s All Star festivities but will not defend his Slam Dunk Contest title, had 27 points and 12 rebounds to help repel Denver. “That’s my one day off to spend time with my family,” said Griffin, who will play in Friday’s

Rising Stars Challenge as well as the main event on Sunday with team mate Paul.

“We’ve been alright (over the first half of the season), but we can be a lot better.” While Griffin and Paul scored the points, DeAndre Jordan manned the lane for Los Angeles with 10 points, 16 rebounds and three blocks.

The Nuggets (18-16) have been hit hard by injuries and were without key players Nene, Rudy Fernandez, Danilo Gallinari and Ty Lawson. Arron Afflalo led Denver with 20 points and Jordan Hamilton had 18 as Denver lost for the fourth time in five games.

Before the game, Nuggets coach George Karl said that Nene and Gal-

linari may return shortly after the All Star break, providing a much needed boost for the side who have fallen into a tie with Portland for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

NEW YORK - Evergreen boxing champion Bernard Hop-kins will return to the ring in April for a rematch against Chad “Bad” Dawson, who vowed on Wednesday to finish the job he started in their controversial title fight last year. The 47-year-old Hopkins (52-5-2), the oldest boxer to win a world title, will put his World Boxing Council light heavyweight belt on the line against fellow American Dawson (30-1) on April 28 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

Their bout last October in Los Angeles ended when Hopkins injured his shoulder in the second round in an awkward fall after Dawson lifted him off his feet as they engaged. Dawson was initially declared the winner of the fight by technical knockout, but the bout was later ruled a no contest by the California State Athletic Commission.

Former light heavyweight champion Dawson said he was

still stung by the reversal and was eager for the fight. “On that night, I came to fight,” Dawson, 29, said at a Manhattan news conference. “I wanted to fight Bernard Hop-kins and I was looking forward to dethrone him that night. The way he pulled the stunt he pulled, it messed up all of my plans.

“So I’m back here, I got to fight him again. After that night I should have been the champion. Legends don’t behave the way he did that night. I would have fought Bernard Hopkins with one finger that night, and probably still would’ve won.”

Hopkins, who broke George Foreman’s record as the oldest boxer to win a world title with his victory over 28-year-old Ca-nadian Jean Pascal last May, left the harsh talk to Dawson.

“Chad Dawson can say what-ever he wants, but I am not going to trash talk this one,” said Hop-kins. “Everyone knows what I am capable of in the ring. They have seen it over 50 times before in the last 20-plus years.”

LONDON - The prospect of outcast Carlos Tevez pull-ing on a Manchester City shirt again moved closer on Wednes-day when manager Roberto Mancini said he accepted the Argentine striker’s apology for his behaviour over recent months.

Tevez issued an unreserved apology on Tuesday and with-drew his appeal against a gross misconduct charge handed to him by the Premier League leaders after spending most of the past three months in his homelend without permission after a seemingly terminal fall-out with the coach.

“I’m happy with what Carlos said. Tomorrow I will talk to him,” Mancini said after City completed a 6-1 aggregate victory over Porto in the Eu-ropa League with a 4-0 thrash-

ing of the Portuguese side on Wednesday.

“I’ve accepted his apology. There’s a chance he can play for Manchester City again. I think he needs two or three weeks to train, and some games, but if he’s ready in two or three weeks that’s normal.”

“Carlo knows the team very well. In the last six or seven months the team has played very well and are top of the Pre-mier League,” Mancini added. “But Carlo is a top striker. He can help us to do a good job in the next two months.”

The events of the past 24 hours represent a remarkable turnaround after the 28-year-old seemed unlikely ever to play for the club again fol-lowing a bitter fall-out that began when he refused to warm up during City’s Champions League defeat at Bayern Mu-nich in September.

At Buleleng, this coming pangerupukan before Nyepi Day Caka 1934 is more likely not to be coloured with ogoh-ogoh (effigies to scare away devils) procession as agreed at the Buleleng Council meeting of culture figures, public figures and village securities at Buleleng Police Headquarters last Wednesday (22/2). Even so, Police and Regency Government will not produce the statement as it is not their right to do it so this statement will be more of a suggestion to the public in not having an ogoh-ogoh procession as stated by Head of Buleleng Police Operation Section, Ida Bagus Wedana Jati, after joining the meeting.

Ayew broke the deadlock with a glancing header from Mathieu Val-buena’s corner in the third minute of time added on leaving the Inter play-ers shaking their heads in disbelief as the French side stretched their unbeaten run in all competitions to 16 games.

Inter coach Claudio Ranieri left Argentine striker Diego Milito on the bench, even though he is the only player to have scored for the team in their last seven games, netting all the goals in the 4-4 home draw against Palermo in Serie A three weeks ago.

Wesley Sneijder and Mauro Zarate were unimpressive against Marseille but Milito was never called upon as Ranieri used only two of his three possible substitutions with Giampaolo Pazzini also staying on the bench. “Milito had influenza for a week. I did not want to risk him,” Ranieri told reporters.

“Marseille were pushing on the left flank and (substitute) Joel Obi did a good job to give us more balance.” Ranieri appeared uncon-cerned by the task facing the Neraz-zurri in the return leg at the San Siro on March 13 “The San Siro will be full and it will be an advantage for

us,” he said. “We can score two goals no problem.

“We played well, we had good counter attacks, we had more op-portunities and they scored on their first chance. “We did not deserve to lose,” Ranieri added.

‘SMALL ADVANTAGE’Marseille coach Didier Des-

champs was cautious about his team’s chances of making the quar-ter-finals. “It’s a small advantage. It’s going to be complicated,” he told reporters. “We will not be in a position to only sit back and wait.” Inter’s best chance of the match came in the 11th minute when Steve Mandanda tipped a Diego Forlan half-volley over the bar.

The hosts enjoyed plenty of pos-session but were made to wait until the half hour to threaten Julio Cesar when a free kick landed in front of goal only for Brandao and Souley-mane Diawara to get muddled up and put the ball out of play while the Inter defence went AWOL. The unmarked Zarate had a chance for Inter eight minutes before the break but his low shot was too weak to bother Mandanda.

Inter looked dangerous on the

break but the Marseille defence held a high line and increased the pressure in the second half, although they struggled to create clear chances. Joel Obi replaced Zarate shortly after the hour as Ranieri looked to add fresh blood to his front line.

His Marseille counterpart Didier Deschamps replaced Brandao with Jordan Ayew in the 73rd minute but the Ghana forward produced an equally unimpressive performance.

Just when it looked as though Inter were going to keep a rare clean sheet, Ayew, who recently returned from the African Nations Cup where he helped Ghana reach the semi-finals, headed home with the last move of the game. “It’s good for him, but it’s even better for the team,” said Deschamps.

“He’s back from a place where it was 35 degrees Celsius with a lot of humidity. He played six games (at the African Nations Cup) and they (Ghana) were expected at least in the final so it’s been psychologically tough on him, too.”

Inter, who have now lost six of their last seven games in all compe-titions, have failed to keep a clean sheet since they beat Serie A rivals AC Milan 1-0 on Jan. 15.

BASEL, Switzerland - Basel produced another Champions League shock as they ventured into uncharted territory in the competition on Wednesday, clinching a dramatic 1-0 victory over Bayern Munich to pile the misery on Germany’s biggest club.

The humble Swiss team, who qualified for the last 16 at the expense of Manchester United after a momentous victory against the English side, had St Jakob-Park rocking again as substitute Valentin Stocker scored an 86th-minute winner.

Basel, who often play in front of only a few thousand fans in the Swiss league, hit the woodwork twice, then survived long periods of Bayern pres-sure before snatching victory.

While Basel’s players milked the crowd’s acclaim, Bayern trooped off thinking the unthinkable.

Their Allianz Arena hosts the final this year but after failing to score an away goal they are in serious danger of their dream being dashed in the last 16.

The Bavarians, who have slipped to third in the Bundesliga after a dip in form, missed the injured Bastian Schweinsteiger, decribed by coach Jupp Heynckes before the game as the brains of the team and in the same class as Barcelona’s Xavi and Andres Iniesta.

Arjen Robben was restored to the starting line-up at the expense of Thomas Mueller, a surprise move by Heynckes which failed to have the desired ef-fect.

Basel’s win was a rare boost for Swiss football following the national team’s failure to qualify for Euro 2012 and the problems facing their domestic game.

Those have seen Sion docked 36 points for fielding ineligible players, a case which nearly earned the country suspension by FIFA, and Neuchatel Xamax kicked out of the league for a series of administrative problems under Russian-born owner Bulat Chagaev.

“We are very happy but we know we’re only halfway there,” said Basel’s coach Heiko Vogel, who has only been in charge since November and spent nine years working with Bayern’s youth divisions where he coached some of the present Bayern team.

“The recipe is very simple, we have an unbelievable will to win and great understanding. We have fun every day during training and that shows.”

Goalkeeper Yann Sommer, whose saves kept Bayern in the game, said: “We have beaten maybe the best two teams in the world, it’s amazing what happened here, we believed in ourselves. Bayern played well but luck was on our side.”

Franck Ribery had a shot blocked by Sommer in the third minute and was denied shortly afterwards when he was sent clear but Sommer pushed his effort into the side-netting as Bayern made a promising start.

“If Ribery’s chances had gone in it would have been a different game,” said Heynckes.

Denpasar (Bali Post)—Bird flu cases remaining to become a threat to citizens of

Denpasar is consistently anticipated by the lineups of the Den-pasar Livestock, Fisheries and Maritime Agency (Disnakanlut). Moreover, the bird flu case has claimed another fatality from the neighboring area, namely Badung. Anticipation against the trans-mission of H5N1 virus is undertaken by mapping the distribution of poultry in the cultured city.

The Head of Denpasar Livestock, Fisheries and Marine Agency, IB Bayu Bramasta, when asked for his confirmation on Wednesday (Feb 22) said that after the re-emergence of the case and claimed a fatality in Badung, his party immediately made coordination with the field officers. “As soon as getting the information, we promptly alert our field officers,” he said.

According to him, other than alerting the field officers, the anticipative measure undertaken was re-intensifying the spray-ing. The spraying was carried out at some points becoming the distribution area of poultry in Denpasar. Most locations were in the area of North Denpasar and East Denpasar. “In those areas, there are many poultry farmer groups. We have always social-ized the precautionary measures against the virus to them,” he explained.

More than that, the anticipative measures had also been per-formed at locations becoming the point of poultry distribution in the market because the transmission of bird flu virus was very fragile in the location where there was quite a lot of poultry. “Similarly, we have socialized it to the poultry and fish traders in the market,” he said.

Similar anticipation was also undertaken at locations becoming the poultry distribution such as on the border of Badung-Denpasar and Denpasar-Gianyar. The method applied at the border was by spraying the vehicles carrying the birds. “We have coordinated this effort with the Transportation Agency and Civilian Security Guard (Tramtib) for the spraying in the border,” he explained. General Manager of Pelindo III Benoa, John Sabatini, when contacted on Wednesday (Feb 22) said that this February was the peak season of the cruise arrival in Benoa totally amounting to 10 cruise ships, where the Crystal Serenity was the seventh cruise ship berthing in Benoa Harbor.

“Facil i ty readiness of the Benoa Harbor is progressively enhanced since the beginning of 2012. It is marked with the completion of the widening and deepening of the groove, harbor pond maintenance up to LWS-9.5 meters as well as the other sup-porting facilities such as Foot Reflexology and arrangement of

freelance parking lot,” he said.On that account, 14 large-sized

ships less than 280 meters were expected to berth alongside in 2012. As planned, the central gov-ernment would also be re-widened the groove of Benoa Harbor in the future so that cruise ships with LOA over 300 meters would no longer anchor outside but came into the pond of Benoa Harbor. It was the trust of the world (Tim Cruise) that Benoa Bali was a comfortable place to visit.

“Benoa Harbor seeks to be-come a Turn Around Port so the tourism activities in Indonesia will increasingly grow and the central point of the tourism embarkation

or disembarkation by cruise ship will be in Bali,” he said.

Sabatini said it would have a good multiplier effect on tourism in Bali in terms of logistics readi-ness, shopping, growing aspect of transportation and so forth. “With the existence of toll road later on and Marina Harbor in Benoa Bali, the appeal of Bali will be increas-ingly in demand,” he said.

In 2012 Bali would be dropped in by 38 cruise ships carrying thousands of tourists. Sabatini also stated that so far the Benoa Harbor was still the most favored by foreign tourists, namely reach-ing 53 percent of the total cruise trips to Indonesia. (kmb27)

Mangupura (Bali Post)—Transmission of HIV/AIDS

in the community is just like an iceberg phenomenon. It is hard to know exactly how many people have been infected by the deadly virus. The data of AIDS Prevention Commission (KPA) of Badung estimate the current HIV/AIDS case in Badung has reached 1,259, but the recorded case only amounted to 761. Of the 761 recorded cases, 70 of them died. Badung occupies the third largest position in terms of the number of cases in Bali.

Chief Executive of the Badung AIDS Prevention Commission (KPA) doubling as the Deputy Re-gent of Badung, I Ketut Sudikerta, recently explained that AIDS had become a deadly disease for the community. Once exposed and positive to the deadly virus, the patients could not be cured so that they would just wait for the death. He explained the transmission of HIV virus could be through a variety of ways either through sexual intercourse, drug injection, breast-feeding by mother with HIV and blood transfusion.

According to him, the efforts to

suppress the transmission of HIV/AIDS conducted by the Badung Government in cooperation with the KPA Badung would never be optimal without being supported by the community. “To that end, the support and participation of all the societal components are needed to optimize the efforts in suppressing the HIV/AIDS transmission in the community,” he said.

Especially to younger genera-tion, he hoped they could make an early prevention effort. They had to implement a healthy lifestyle behavior. In addition, they should also do their own best to avoid the rampant promiscuity.

He said, the Badung communi-ty who would like have a medical checkup, it could be carried out in some existing clinics such as the IMS Clinic at Kuta Health Center I and South Kuta Health Center, methadone maintenance treatment services (PTRM) Clinic in Kuta Health Center I, VCT Clinic at Abiansemal Health Center I, Kuta I and South Kuta, HIV/AIDS Counseling Services in Mengwi Health Center I and North Kuta as well as in the VCT, CST and

PMTCT services in the Badung Hospital.

To prevent the transmission of HIV/AIDS, a special regulation was currently being prepared in the form of the Regent Regula-tion on tattoo services. Such an idea departed from the fact that deadly virus could also be transmitted from non-sterile tat-tooing equipment. In the Badung territory, many tattooing services scattered in Kuta and the sur-rounding areas.

According to Sudikerta, aside from serving as regulation against the proliferation of tattooing busi-ness in Kuta, the Regent Regula-tion also posed the follow up against the report of the Ministry of Health regarding two Australian cit-izens getting infected after making a tattoo in Bali in November 2011. Precisely, they did it in a tattoo shop located between the Poppies Lane 1 and 2. Hopefully, the establishment of the Regent Regulation could an-ticipate the HIV/AIDS transmission through tattoos as well as serve as a legal instrument for tattoo business in Kuta area. Moreover, so far the roving tattoo services could not be controlled maximally. (kmb25)

The anger over the Quran burn-ing has sparked two days of protests across Afghanistan and tapped into anti-foreign sentiment fueled by a popular perception that foreign troops disrespect Afghan culture and Islam. The demonstrations prompted the U.S. to lock down its embassy and bar its staff from traveling.

The Afghan Interior Ministry said in a statement that clashes dur-ing a protest in the eastern province of Parwan left four people dead. It said an investigation was under way to determine what happened. The other deaths occurred at a U.S.

base outside Kabul, where security guards killed one person, and in Jalalabad and Logar province, the ministry said.

The demonstration in Kabul drew thousands of protesters, who chanted “Death to America,” hurled rocks and set tires alight outside a complex that is home to foreign contractors, police and some coali-tion military forces. Nearby, angry demonstrators set a fuel truck ablaze on a main highway running east out of the city, sending black smoke billowing into the air.

The U.S. apologized Tuesday

for burning the copies of the Quran, which had been pulled from the shelves of the Parwan Detention Fa-cility, adjoining Bagram Air Field, because they contained extremist messages or inscriptions.

U.S. Gen. John Allen, the top commander of American and NATO forces in Afghanistan, said after the books had been mistakenly given to troops to be burned at a garbage pit without realizing it.

“It was not a decision that was made because they were religious materials,” Allen said Tuesday, one day after Afghan workers at the garbage pit found the books. “It was not a decision that was made with respect to the faith of Islam. It was a mistake. It was an error. The moment we found out about it we immediately stopped and we intervened.”

A U.S. and a French journalist were killed in the central Syrian city of Homs today, the 19th day of intense shelling by the forces of President Bashar al-Assad bent on quashing a growing opposition.

The deaths of American Ma-rie Colvin and Frechman Remi Ochlik were confirmed by French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe. They come less than a week after New York Times correspondent Anthony Shadid died in northern Syria from an apparent asthma attack and a day after well-known Syrian opposition Rami al-Sayed journalist died in Homs.

A Long Island native, Colvin wrote for the British Sunday Times. Like Shadid, she was con-sidered one of the best foreign cor-respondents in the world, covering global conflicts for decades. Ochlik was a freelance photographer who recently won a 2012 World Press Photo prize for a photo from the Libyan revolution.

In a statement, the editor of the Sunday Times called Colvin an “extraordinary figure.” “She believed profoundly that report-ing could curtail the excesses of brutal regimes and make the inter-national community take notice,” John Witherow wrote. “Above all, as we saw in her powerful report last weekend, her thoughts were with the victims of violence.”

Colvin and Ochlik were in a house in the Baba Amr neighbor-hood of Homs, the district hit hardest by what residents have described as almost three weeks of relentless shelling that has left hundreds dead. Video posted to YouTube purported to show their bodies in a house de-stroyed by tank shelling.

Activists say 10 Syrians were also killed and three other journal-ists were injured, including Col-vin’s photographer Paul Conroy, who the Times believes is “not too seriously hurt.”

Colvin filed a report for the BBC Tuesday, saying Baba Amr and its residents are besieged.

VIENNA/TEHRAN - The U.N. nuclear watchdog’s latest mission to Iran failed to budge a defiant Tehran over its disputed nuclear program, sending oil prices to a nine-month high over fears of an increasing risk of confrontation with the West. The United States criticized Iran on Wednesday over the collapse of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s talks in Tehran, saying it again showed the Islamic Republic’s refusal to abide by international obligations over its nuclear program.

Expressing defiance, Supreme

Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Iran’s nuclear policies would not change despite mounting in-ternational pressure against what the West says are Tehran’s plans to obtain nuclear bombs. “With God’s help, and without paying atten-tion to propaganda, Iran’s nuclear course should continue firmly and seriously,” he said on state TV. “Pressures, sanctions and assassina-tions will bear no fruit. No obstacles can stop Iran’s nuclear work.”

A team from the Vienna-based IAEA had hoped to inspect a site at Parchin, southeast of Tehran, where the agency believes there is a facility to test explosives. But

the IAEA said Iran “did not grant permission.”

The failure of the two-day IAEA visit could hamper any resump-tion of wider nuclear negotiations between Iran and six world powers - the United States, China, Russia, Britain, France and Germany - as the sense grows that Tehran feels it is being backed into a corner.

The standoff has rattled oil markets. On Wednesday, London-traded benchmark Brent crude for April delivery rose for a third day - up $1.24 a barrel at $122.90, a nine-month high. U.S. crude futures for April were up 3 cents at $106.28 a barrel.

KABUL, Afghanistan — The Interior Ministry on Wednesday said seven people were killed in clashes between Afghan security forces and protesters demonstrating against the burning of Muslim holy books at a NATO military base.

Voyage leader Michael Double said the black and cream-coloured mammals with prominent dolphin-like beaks had been spotted in the wild only a handful of times through history. According to the Australian environment department, there have only been two previous confirmed sightings -- a lone individual in

New Zealand and a group of three in Western Australia

They have never been filmed live before. “These animals are practi-cally entirely known from stranded dead whales, and there haven’t been many of them,” Double told AFP, calling the footage “unique”. “They are an offshore animal, occupying

deep water, and when they surface it is only for a very short period of time.”

Double said what was remark-able about the sighting was that the whale was previously thought to be a solitary creature, yet was in a pod of 10 to 12.

“To find them in a pod is very exciting and will change the guide books. Our two whale experts will now carefully study the footage to work out the whale sizes and so on and prepare a scientific paper.” The Shepherd’s beaked whale, also known as the Tasman beaked whale, was discovered in 1937 but little is known about them.

NEW DELHI — Since before the age of dinosaurs it has bur-rowed unbothered beneath the monsoon-soaked soils of remote northeast India — unknown to science and mistaken by villagers as a deadly, miniature snake.

But this legless amphibian’s time in obscurity has ended, thanks to an intrepid team of biologists led by University of Delhi professor Sathy-abhama Das Biju. Over five years of digging through forest beds in the rain, the team has identified an entirely new family of amphibians — called chikili-dae — endemic to the region but with ancient links to Africa.

Their discovery, published Wednesday in a journal of the Royal Society of London, gives yet more evidence that India is a hotbed of amphibian life with habitats worth protecting against the country’s industry-heavy development agenda. It also gives exciting new evidence in the study of prehistoric species mi-gration, as well as evolutionary paths influenced by continental shift.

“This is a major hotspot of bio-logical diversity, but one of the least explored,” Biju said in an interview with The Associated Press. “We hope this new family will show the impor-tance of funding research in the area. We need to know what we have, so

we can know what to save.”His first effort in conserving the

chikilidae was to give it a scientific name mirroring what the locals use in their Garo language. The chikili-dae is a caecilian, the most primitive of three amphibian groups that also include frogs and salamanders.

“We hope when the locals see the name, and their language, be-ing used across the world, they will understand this animal’s im-portance and join in trying to save it,” Biju said. “India’s biodiversity is fast depleting. We are destroying these habitats without mercy.”

The chikilidae’s home in long-ignored tropical forests now faces drastic change under programs to cut trees, plant rice paddy, build roads and generate industry as India’s economic growth fuels a breakneck drive in development. More industrial pollutants, more pesticides and more people occupying more land may mean a world of trouble for a creature that can be traced to the earliest ver-tebrates to creep across land.

Biju — a botanist-turned-herpe-tologist now celebrated as India’s “Frogman” — has made it his life work to find and catalog new species. There are too many cases of “nameless extinction,” with animals disappearing before they are ever known, he said. “We don’t even know what we’re losing.”

A new drug to treat advanced skin cancer, or metastatic mela-noma, has been shown to nearly double average survival time in a study of more than 130 patients, researchers said Wednesday. Made by Genentech, a US subsidiary of the Swiss pharmaceutical giant Roche, the drug, Zelboraf, was ap-

proved by the US Food and Drug Administration in August 2011, making it the first new treatment for melanoma in 13 years.

The latest study, an intermedi-ate phase II trial whose results are published in the New England Journal of Medicine, followed 132 patients at 13 medical sites in the United States and Australia. Study subjects survived an average of

15.9 months, when typical survival among people whose melanoma has spread to other organs is about nine months, it said.

“We knew this drug would make the melanomas shrink in a large proportion of patients and that it worked better than chemotherapy,” said senior author Antoni Ribas, a professor of hematology and on-cology and researcher at University

of California Los Angeles’s Jons-son Cancer Center.

“We did not know that patients taking Zelboraf were living longer until now.” The drug can be used to treat about half of all patients with metastatic melanoma, or about 4,000 patients in the United States each year, the researchers said.

Zelboraf, a twice-a-day pill, works by blocking a protein that is

involved with cell growth in patients with advanced melanoma whose tu-mors express a gene mutation called BRAF V600E. About 53 percent of patients with that mutation see their tumors shrink by more than 30 percent, while an additional 30 percent of patients see tumors get smaller but not quite as much.

The drug failed to elicit a re-sponse in 14 percent of patients.

Amadea Resort & Villas takes great pleasure to announce the launch of a Corporate Social Re-sponsibility program that focuses on giving back to the local commu-nity. Amadea Cares is set to become the umbrella for a number of social initiatives that will be carried out for the remainder of this year.

Not everyone is fortunate enough to benefit from Bali’s flourishing tourism industry. But Amadea Cares aims ad-dress this issue and make a difference to the lives of those in need by support-ing orphaned children, the aged, the impoverished and the disabled.

The resort is now allocating a percentage from its monthly profit margin to this worthy cause and staff members will contribute di-rectly from their respective salaries. Each in-house guest will also be in-vited to participate by donating just

Rp.5.000 during their stay, which is less than the price of a single drink. All funds raised through Amadea Cares will be distributed to a num-ber of carefully selected organiza-tions requiring support.

Amadea Resort & Villas chose to debut this program on Valentine’s Day, a time that celebrates love and commitment. The first recipient of a donation from Amadea Cares was Yayasan Senyum Bali also known

as the Bali Smile Foundation. This non-profit charity organization was established in 2005 by Mary North-more, a Bali resident originally from the UK. It is an independent foundation that brings essential

healthcare to local people with se-vere craniofacial disabilities.

So missing out on just one drink during your stay could make a big difference to the life of a Balinese person in need!

That gave Adele her 21st week at the top spot, beating the record held by Houston with her 1992 “Bodyguard” album. “21” which features hits like “Rolling in the Deep” and “Someone Like You” has now sold more than 18 million copies worldwide since its release in February 2011, Adele’s Columbia Record label said.

The 23 year-old singer and song-writer also saw a surge in sales for her debut album, “19,” which sold 87,000 copies. Houston’s songs also saw a huge sales rise following her death in a Beverly Hills hotel on February 11 and a touching tribute by Jennifer Hudson at the Grammy awards on February 12.

Seven of Houston’s albums re-entered the Billboard chart this week, led by “Whitney: The Greatest Hits” compilation at No. 2, selling 175,000 copies. Her self-titled album sold 17,000 to take the 37th spot. Hous-ton’s “I Will Always Love You” single took the No. 2 spot in the Billboard Digital Songs Chart.

GRAMMY BOOSTThe Billboard 200 album chart

reflected a Grammy-influenced boost for other artists. Pop singer Bruno Mars, who was nominated for six Grammys but went home empty-hand-ed, still saw his album “Doo-Wops &

Hooligans” notch the No. 8 position, boosted by his retro-inspired uptempo performance of “Runaway Baby” at the Los Angeles awards show.

His album was followed by Gram-my’s best country album winners Lady Antebellum’s “Own The Night” at No. 9 and newcomers The Civil Wars, who picked up two Grammy awards, rounded out the top 10 with “Barton Hollow.”

Country singer Jason Aldean, Rihanna, British band Coldplay and country group The Band Perry all saw their albums climb the top 20.

Katy Perry, who stormed back defiantly in her first big public perfor-mance at the Grammys after husband Russell Brand filed for divorce in December, saw her new single “Part of Me” notch the top spot on the Billboard Digital Songs chart, with 411,000 downloads. Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” and “Set Fire to the Rain” took No. 3 and No. 4 on the Digital Songs chart respectively.

LOS ANGELES - In a classy move certain to enrage fans while boosting sales, the National Enquirer has pub-lished a photo of Whitney Houston’s open casket this week. The image of the late pop diva was purportedly taken during a private viewing at the Whigh-am Funeral Home in Newark, N.J.

The exercise in sensationalism is on par with the photos of Houston’s last meal and the bathtub she died in that TMZ ran in the days immediately after her February 11 death at the Beverly

Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. There’s some precedent for the En-

quirer’s ghoulish glimpse at Whitney’s wake. The tabloid ran similar open casket shots of Elvis Presley after the King of Rock died in 1977. Just as it did with Presley, the headline loudly proclaims that it is “the last photo” taken of the singer.

The Enquirer also teases some other tawdry details about the Houston viewing. The singer was reportedly outfitted in her favorite purple dress, $500,000 worth of jewelry, and had gold slippers on her feet.

Bill Clinton had his saxophone, but President Barack Obama can sing the blues. Obama lent his voice to a White House jam featuring Mick Jagger, B.B. King, Jeff Beck and Buddy Guy on Tuesday during a celebration of blues and its influence on modern pop culture.

After wowing crowds in January by singing a line from Al Green’s classic hit “Let’s Stay Together” at a Harlem fundraiser, the President sang a verse of “Sweet Home Chicago” in the all-star finale of a TV special taped at the White House. “We were trying to get you to help us sing. I heard you singing Al Green,” blues guitar legend Guy hollered to Obama on Tuesday. “So you started something. You got to keep it up now. You can do it.”

Taking a microphone handed to him by Rolling Stones frontman Jagger, a smiling Obama sang a solo verse of “Sweet Home Chicago” before handing back to the band. The performance was part of a PBS television special marking

Black History month that will be broadcast on February 27 as “In Performance at the White House: Red, White and Blues,” the public broad-caster said. Obama’s blues solo recalled Clinton’s saxophone playing appearance in 1992 on the “The Arsenio Hall Show”, which was credited with boosting his presidential campaign.

Obama’s brief rendition of “Let’s Stay To-gether” in January helped increase sales of the 1971 Al Green classic by 490 percent in the fol-lowing week, according to Billboard magazine, and the YouTube video has been viewed more than 7 million times.

LOS ANGELES - The late Whitney Houston was unable to oust Adele from the top spot on the Billboard 200 album chart, and the British singer’s “21” replaced “The Bodyguard” as the longest running No. 1 album by a woman. Boosted by her six Grammy awards and performance comeback, Adele’s “21” saw its biggest sales week yet in 52 weeks on the U.S. chart, selling 730,000 copies according to Nielsen SoundScan.

SAN FRANCISCO - PayPal, the online payments company owned by eBay Inc, just got a new rival in the race to develop a mobile payment service that can be used in physical stores.

Boku Inc, a big online mobile payments company backed by venture capital firms includ-ing Andreessen Horowitz and Benchmark Capital, unveiled a new service on Thursday that lets people pay with any mobile phone anywhere credit cards are accepted.

Boku already provides carrier billing through about 230 wire-less carriers, including AT&T Inc, Vodafone Group Plc and Verizon Communications Inc in more than 60 countries. This service lets peo-

ple pay with their mobile number and get the transactions charged to their monthly phone bill.

Carrier billing is typically lim-ited to smaller online purchases, either through personal computers or within mobile phone apps.

Boku’s new platform, called Boku Accounts, allows purchases in physical stores, a much bigger market. The service will be brand-ed and offered by wireless carriers to customers, with Boku running the system in the background.

The move puts Boku in closer competition with PayPal, which is pushing its popular online payments service into physical stores. Google Inc is also trying to get its Google Wallet service into stores through a partnership with giants such as MasterCard Inc and Citigroup Inc.

PayPal’s in-store offering works with merchants’ existing point-of-sale terminals, but usu-ally requires a software upgrade. Google Wallet works with phones that have Near-Field Communica-tion, or NFC, chips in them and merchants need a terminal that supports this technology.

Boku’s service comes with a sticker that users can slap on the back of their mobile phones, turning any handset into an NFC-enabled device. It also comes with a payment card that can be swiped using existing retailer terminals, without a software upgrade, ac-cording to the company.

“We wanted this to be avail-able in any store,” Ron Hirson, co-founder of Boku, said. “You don’t need a new phone or a new terminal.”

U.S. banks were the S&P 500’s worst performing sector. Investors feared that weak euro zone growth would hamper countries dealing with heavy debt loads and the banks exposed to those debts.

“We’re very concerned around the markedly deteriorating credit fundamentals in Europe,” said Steven Baffico, chief executive officer at Four Wood Capital Part-ners in New York.

Data showing weakness in the euro zone services and manufac-turing sectors overshadowed the day-old deal to bail out Greece.

After touching a near 7-month high on Tuesday, the KBW bank index fell 2 percent. A key Eu-ropean bank index declined 2.5 percent.

The S&P 500 index failed again

to hold above 1,360, the high reached last May and a key resis-tance point that could spark further gains if broken. The benchmark index is up about 8 percent for the year and gained more than 20 per-cent from its October lows.

The Dow Jones industrial aver-age lost 27.02 points, or 0.21 per-cent, to 12,938.67. The S&P 500 Index dropped 4.55 points, or 0.33 percent, to 1,357.66. The Nasdaq Composite fell 15.40 points, or 0.52 percent, to 2,933.17.

Oil services companies rose, partly offsetting the decline by banks. Drilling contractor Nabors Industries rose 7 percent to $21.78 a day after its operating results topped Wall Street expectations and as the chief executive detailed a retooling of the company.

The PHLX oil services sector index rose 1.7 percent.

WASHINGTON - The United States said on Wednesday it was still considering whether to support Japan’s bid to join talks on a trans-Pacific regional free trade agreement, three months after Tokyo announced interest in the negotiations.

“Both governments agreed to continue the consultative process, with additional meetings to be arranged at a later date,” the office of the U.S. Trade Representative said in a statement after two days of talks with Japanese officials.

“The meeting was an opportunity for the United States to con-tinue the assessment of Japan’s readiness” to make significant market-opening reforms, USTR said.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda announced Tokyo’s interest in joining talks on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) back on November 11, prior to joining President Barack Obama in Honolulu for a meeting of Asia Pacific leaders.

The two sides had senior level talks earlier this month and followed that with technical level talks this week.

Detroit-based U.S. auto manufacturers have objected to Japan joining the TPP negotiations, saying they do not believe Tokyo is prepared at this time to dismantle “non-tariff” barriers that they blame for low U.S. auto sales in Japan.

Japan, whose tariff on U.S. autos is already zero, says Detroit’s claims are exaggerated and the real problem is that the automak-ers do not make cars suited to the Japanese market.

U.S. trade officials have said the decision on whether Japan will be allowed into the negotiations will be made in consulta-tion with the eight other countries currently involved in the TPP talks - Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, Chile and Peru.

Those countries set a goal in November of finishing the TPP talks this year.

Canada and Mexico have also asked to join the negotiations and are awaiting a decision as well.

A money dealer reacts at a foreign exchange brokerage as the U.S. dollar is traded at 80.13 -18 yen range in Tokyo Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012.

Forty deaths would be the highest death toll from a train ac-cident since Feb. 1, 1970, when a train smashed into another at full speed in suburban Buenos Aires, killing 200 people. Crescenti said at least 550 people were injured, and said that 30 people remain trapped inside the first car, where rescuers carved open the roof and set up a pulley system to extract them.

The commuter train came in too fast and hit the barrier at the end of the platform at about 12 mph (20 kph), smashing the front of the engine and crunch-ing the leading cars behind it; one car penetrated nearly 20 feet (six meters) into the next, Argen-tina’s transportation secretary,

J.P. Schiavi told reporters at the station.

Most damaged was the first car, where passengers make space for bicycles. Survivors told the TeleNoticias channel that many people were injured in a jumble of metal and glass. Passengers said windows exploded as the tops of train cars separated from their floors. The trains are usu-ally packed with people standing between the seats, and many were thrown into each other and to the floor by the force of the hard stop.

Many people suffered bruises, and many with lesser injuries were waiting for attention on the Once station’s platforms as helicopters and more than a dozen ambu-

lances took the most seriously injured to nearby hospitals.

There have been five serious train accidents since Dec. 2010; the most deadly of these happened last Sept. 13, when a bus driver crossed the tracks in front of an oncoming train, killing 11.

“This machine left the shop yesterday and the brakes worked well. From what we know, it braked without problems at previous stations. At this point I don’t want to speculate about the causes,” Ruben Sobrero, union chief on the Sarmiento line, told Radio La Red. The motorman has been hospitalized and the union hasn’t been able to speak with him yet, Sobrero added.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — A packed train slammed into the end of the line in Buenos Aires’ busy Once station Wednesday, killing several people and injuring hundreds of morning commuters, authorities said. “There are fatalities,” said Alberto Crescenti, the city’s emergency medical director. He declined to say how many, but when asked about reports that as many as 40 had died, he replied, “It’s possible.”

Fisher sa id a bul le t went through the backpack and hit the little girl. Investigators were working to determine how the child got the gun.Li t t le Amina Kocer-Bow-man was in critical condition Wednesday night after surgery at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, hospital spokes-woman Leila Gray said. The Bremerton Schools super-intendent’s office said the girl was shot in the abdomen.KING-TV reported that her friends and relatives gave a ‘thumbs up’ signal to reporters as they left the hospital late Wednesday. The school is in a quiet residential neighborhood about 20 miles west of Seattle, across Puget Sound.Fisher said officers and emer-gency crews were dispatched to the school around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in response to a call that a student was shot by another student. The school went into lockdown immediately after the shoot-ing, said Bremerton Schools spokeswoman Patty Glaser. Lockdown procedures call for announcements to be made over the school’s loudspeakers and for teachers to lock their classrooms, she said.Parents picked up their children later in the afternoon.

Armin Jahr Elementary has about 400 students, Glaser said. She said the school would reopen Thursday and three counselors would be available to talk to teachers, students and parents.“Our plans at this time, school will continue as usual,” Glaser said. Many questions remained. Police did not immediately describe the gun involved. In the latest scorecard by the Brady Campaign, a national gun control advocacy group, Washington scored no points in the child safety category be-cause the state does not require trigger locks for guns and lacks laws to prevent child access to firearms.“Washington state is a loosely regulated state when it comes to firearms,” said Gregory Roberts, executive director of Washington Cease Fire, a Brady Campaign affiliate.Amanda Roth, a staff attorney for the San Francisco-based Legal Community Against Violence, said 27 states and the District of Columbia have some form of firearm child access prevention laws. Such laws can include requirements to use gun locks and criminal penalties for adults who allow children to get their hands on guns.

Chief Totoy said there were three inmates getting injured in the riots on Tuesday night. They were Supriyanto, 34, dweller of block C2 in drug case, hav-ing injuries on his right hand; Nyoman Tirtayasa, 33, dweller of block D in drug case, having injuries on his right arm; and Roni Efendi, 32, having injuries on the right calf. Roni was an inmate in the case of theft.

The three inmates were taken to Trijata Police Hospital to ob-tain medical treatment. Having been treated, the two inmates suffering minor injuries were directly taken into detention cell of Bali Police. Meanwhile, the inmate suffering an injury on the calf was still undergoing treatment in the Trijata Police Hospital. “Later on, at the time the three injured inmates will be taken back to prison. We will see the situation first,” he said.

Chief Totoy admitted there were no inmates examined

after the riots. He argued that his party would see the further situation. If the situation was truly conducive, then police would conduct the examina-tion. Moreover, the riots also resulted in fire-raising and van-dalism against the facilities in the prison. “Most importantly, the situation must be conducive first. When the situation is under control and safe, then we will examine them,” he said.

When asked about the se-curity in Kerobokan prison after the riots, this two-star general disclosed that it would be maintained. Other than as-signing personnel on site, his party would also organize a regular patrol. Custody and patrol would be made until the situation would be really getting conducive. “So far, a number of officers have been alerted in the location. It is carried out to pre-vent any subsequent incident,” he added. (kmb21)

BOYOLALI - Hundreds of houses in Kismoyono village, Boyolali district, Central Java, were on Wednesday inundated after heavy rains since the night before caused the Kijing and Jampen rivers to overflow.

Kismoyoso village chief Joko Margono said the deluge started to invade people`s hous-es at 01.00 and kept on rising until Wednesday morning.

“This year`s flooding is worse than in 2011. Our village is flooded every rainy season,”

he said. The flood waters rose to the

height of an adult`s hips but at around 09.00 they began to recede. People were now busy cleaning up the mud and gar-bage brought by the flood.

But at seven hamlets in Kismoyoso the height of the flood waters ranged from an ankle to an adult`s breast. This happened in the hamlets of Ngampo, Tegalan, Beran, Gra-sak, Krajan, Jampen, Kedung-gowo, and Tambas.

There were no reports of fatalities because of the flood.

“The increase is quite good,” Co-ordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Hatta Rajasa said here on Wednesday.

With the signing of the decree, the

National Logistics Agency (Bulog) is required to buy rice from farmers at above the base-buying price.

Hatta further said the new base-buying price favors farmers.

The increase accords with the proposal by the agriculture minister who sought a 27-28 percent rise in the base-buying price of rice and un-hulled rice.

According to agriculture ministry officials, the base purchasing price of rice should ideally be set at a range of Rp6,000 to Rp7,000 per kg.

The price hike, however, re-ceived a cool response from farmers

in Central Sulawesi province.“The increase is a tidy sum,

but still has not much influence because the price of rice at the farmers? level is currently far above the government`s rice purchasing price,” said Jhony, a chief of the farmers’ group in Palolo subsistrit, Central Palu, on Thursday.

He noted that the new base-buying price only serves as a price

standard for Bulog when purchas-ing farmers` rice.

Lewis, a farmer from Tolay vil-lage, Parigi Moutong district, said the price of rice at the local market is currently Rp8,000 kg.

Also, Bulog officials previously said that the 28% percent increase in the base-buying price will raise the amount of subsidized rice for the poor by Rp5 trillion.

JAKARTA - The directorate gen-eral of customs is currently examining no fewer than one thousand containers filled with suspected poisonous waste materials that have entered the country during 2010, a spokesman said.

“We have not yet released the con-tainers and are still examining their contents,” the directorate general`s spokesman, Martediansyah, said here Wednesday.

It was believed the containers could reach Indonesia`s customs territory because of help from certain parties, he said.

The directorate general had coor-dinated with the Attorney General`s Office (AGO) on the steps that needed to be taken on 113 containers holding poisonous substances that had been sealed at Tanjung Priok port.

Coordination with the AGO was necessary because of the possibility of corrupt acts having been committed in the importation of the hazardous materials.

“Our focus is on violation of the cus-toms law while the matter of possible corruption in the cases is the AGO`s business,” Martediansyah said.

Meanwhile, AGO spokesman Noor Rachmad confirmed that the office had

coordinated with the customs direc-torate general about the importation of the hazardous wastes but a formal order to investigate the matter had not yet been issued.

Earlier, it was reported the 113 con-tainers were filled with B3 category B (hazardous and poisonous) goods. Of the 113 containers, 89 had come from England and the rest from the Netherlands.

They had arrived at Tanjung Priok port in five shipments since late No-vember 2011 and their importer was PT HHS while they were filled with scrap steel mixed with chemicals, soil and tar.

Teep Beans:Lazing while Enjoying Slow Snack

Among the delicacy of Balinese food with hot spices,

in fact, Balinese community also retains easy-peasy

snack but sometimes a bit harder. One of them is the

bean of teep. Its tree resembles to that of breadfruit.

However, its beans are far smaller compared to that of

breadfruit. When its fruits have turned ripe, they usually

attract the presence of civet. Actually, this nocturnal cat

is only interested to eat the flesh of fruit. Similar thing

also happens to coffee beans. Since the skin of beans

is hard it cannot digest them so civet could only enjoy

the flesh. On the next day, those seeds could be found

at the feces of civet. All seeds remain intact. However,

if people see the ripe fruits first, they will not need to

wait the coming of civet to pick them.

To process the beans, they are first cleansed

thoroughly and dry under the sun. Afterward, they

should be fried without oil but sand. When they have

been finely cooked they can be enjoyed while relaxing

or lazing. As the shell and beans are slightly hard,

it may take a bit long time to open and chew them.

However, if they are indeed dry enough and cooked

well they must be easy to open and crispy. They are

good to consume as slow snack while chatting or

watching TV. (BTN/punia)

Ousted prison guards and some 400 heavily armed police and military spent the night massed outside the notorious Kerobokan prison, which holds more than 1,000 inmates, includ-ing 12 Australian drug mules.

Security forces had stormed the overcrowded prison at dawn on Wednesday to wrest control after a night of arson and stone-throwing, only to lose it again late that night.

“The prisoners took over the prison again, which forced se-curity personnel to fire warning shots into the air,” provincial military command spokesman Wing Handoko told AFP.

With the prison sealed off by the inmates, it was not clear if there were any casualties inside.

Handoko said that authori-ties would attempt to evacuate all foreign and female prison-ers from the complex, but did not say how such an operation would be carried out.

“We are trying to find the right moment to try and evacuate foreigners and female prison-ers,” he said. “We don’t want to take chances, just in case the foreigners become a target of the prisoners’ anger.”

Sixty foreigners are held at the jail, including 14 women, said Anang Khuzairi, head of security at Kerobokan. The jail is home to 1,015 inmates -- among them 125 women -- more than three times its intended capacity.

H a n d o k o s a i d s e c u r i t y f o r c e s h a d b e e n r e l e a s i n g occasional volleys of aerial gunshots through the n ight to reinforce their presence to pr isoners , and to deter any from escaping.

Police and military personnel threw a security cordon around the jail , guarding all access points to the facility which is located in a suburban area of Bali just seven kilometres (four

miles) from the tourism hub of Kuta beach.

In the early hours of Thursday morning an AFP reporter heard three minutes of continuous gunfire unleashed by security forces.

Shortly after, a flaming torch made of rags wrapped around a pole was flung from inside the prison and landed near a televi-sion broadcaster’s vehicle, but was extinguished before the fire could spread.

Shouting and the rattling of the prison’s inner gates had been heard before police opened fire, but after the volley silence descended on the jail, broken by police occasionally firing into the air.

As dawn broke over a prison that has been without electricity since the trouble first broke out, police again moved armoured vehicles and water cannons outside the jail walls.

The first riots were a distance away from the wings where the Australian prisoners are kept, but it was not clear whether the second night of trouble was any closer to quarters housing foreign inmates.

All 12 Australian prisoners at Kerobokan, including two on death row and six serving life sentences, were safe after the first night’s trouble, Aus-tralia’s foreign ministry said on Wednesday.

Among the Australians at the jail are convicted drug traf-ficker Schapelle Corby and a group known as the “Bali Nine”, who were caught attempting to smuggle drugs from Bali.

There have been a number of riots at the jail in recent years, including one triggered by a police drug raid in June.

It is one of Indonesia’s most notorious prisons, with a com-bustible mix of inmates includ-ing convicted murderers, sex offenders and others guilty of violent crimes.

It is said when a preparation of nangluk merana or pest prevention ritual was held in Besakih Temple during the reign of Dalem Watureng-gong, came an ugly stranger in ragged clothes who claimed himself to be the king’s brother. The man with such disgusting appearance claimed as a brahmin and no one believed him. Without a command, the people cast out and insulted the man from Keling while taunting with the bursts of hurt-ful words. When the man was away from the venue of ceremony, the uninvited guest echoed a curse so that the ceremony turned incoherent.

Ultimately, it really happened what he expected. The days of ritual preparation turned chaotic. Ritual paraphernalia made thoroughly and with difficulty was suddenly rotten and destroyed. Moreover, main ingre-dients of the ceremony were no lon-ger easy to obtain. Suddenly the land turned dry, while plants wilted and died. The weather grew hotter and people were sweltering. Dalem Wa-turenggong immediately attempted to contemplate what caused the dishar-mony and catastrophe. He assigned his underlings to fetch the Keling brahmin. After expressing his apol-ogy, the Keling brahmin was asked to get fully involved in the ceremony which would be carried out soon. The brahmin was then recognized as the king’s brother and awarded the title of Dalem Sidakarya.

The legend originating from the Chronicle Bebali Sidakarya was framed in a dramatic structure so that it could engender the art of mask performances. Started with the intro-duction of pangelembar mask, Kodi opened with the dance of hard mask and old mask. This section was an opportunity for the dancer to show off his dance skills. The hard mask appearing first had a strict facial ex-pression revealed through a straight-forward and nimble interpretation. On the way round, the old mask then showed off a gentle characteristic, old facial expression with white hair, eyebrows, and whiskers. His old age was also illustrated by the behavior of the unsteady and frail motion.

Emergence of the penasar figures marked the beginning of the story. Then, the figure with half-opened mask—eyes and mouth—acted as the narrator. He opened, controlled the storyline, and served as a com-mentator. Through the figure as Penasar, Kodi attempted to contextu-alize the setting of storyline through expression of some social criticisms at issue lately. Arsawijaya mask presented next was intended to make the atmosphere quiet. The mask with charismatic look framed with a smooth and supple choreography exposed gestures in its dramatiza-tion. In the performance played that afternoon, this mask was no other than Dalem Waturenggong.

Characters of the ordinary people called bondres turned to be a com-plement of the mask performance. Pajegan mask presented by Kodi in the Wantilan Hall of Bali Art Center Denpasar showcased some personifications of the average per-son. It was on the performance the capability of a dancer could be seen, especially how to give emphasis on the theme he played through the aspiration of small people. With strong characterization, Kodi was so keen to play the characters of his bondres, both visible through totali-ty of characterization or through the theme made into communication reference of spiritual and religious values packed humorously.

Sidakarya mask appearing at the end of the Pajegan Mask dance-drama indeed functioned or was interpreted to establish a religious ceremony. The most important and major figure in the ritual perfor-mance was the white mask denot-ing a combination of human and demonic facial expressions. The mouth gaped between laughing and grimacing, while the eyes narrowed between scaring and loving. With a bowl containing the canang sari oblation, yellow rice, incense, and perforated coins, the figure showing off the behavior between malignant and affectionate chanted mantra and then threw perforated coins and yellow rice. Indonesia to evacuate foreign inmates from riot jail

DENPASAR - Indonesian forces backed by water cannons and armoured vehicles were locked in a tense stand-off outside a prison on Bali island Thursday after rioting inmates took control for a second night.

Denpasar (Bali Post)—Riots in the Kerobokan Prison,

Denpasar, on Tuesday night (Feb 21) caused some inmates to be rushed to Trijata Police Hospital on Jalan Trijata Denpasar on Wednes-day morning (Feb 22). A total of three inmates were injured in the riots happening in the prison with overloaded capacity.

Based on observation made by Bali Post in the hospital, the three injured inmates were Roni Efendi, 32, an inmate of theft case (block C1) from Banyuwangi suffered from a gunshot injury on the calf of his right leg; Supriyanto, 34, an in-mate of drug case (block C2) from Jember suffered from an injury on the right hand; and Nyoman Tir-tayasa, 33, an inmate of drug case (block D) from Badung Mengwi suffered from an abrasion. Based

on the information compiled, such injuries were caused by glass shrap-nel and gunshot when the officers tried to secure the raging riots.

Having got medical treatment, two of the three inmates were tem-porarily commended in the deten-tion cell of Bali Police until the situ-ation of Kerobokan Prison turned conducive. Meanwhile, Roni one of the three injured inmates, until the publication of this news, was still under treatment in the Police Hospital due to a gunshot injury on the calf of his right leg.

Related to the condition of the three riot victims, the Division Head of Health Services of the Bali Police, Pramu Joko, with permission of the Bali Police Chief when asked for his confirmation said the three inmates were all in good health. Meanwhile, regard-

ing the gunshot injury was being investigated further. “I did not find a bullet in the wound, so that we do not know for sure the cause of his wound,” he said.

Just a reminder, the riots oc-curred again in the Kerobokan Prison, Denpasar, on Tuesday night. Even, the recent riots were followed with fire-raising and stone throwing in the prison area. Though a number of firefighters were deployed to extinguish the fire in the prison, the effort got opposition from the inmates where hundreds of stones were thrown at the firefighters. Similarly, a standby ambulance in the parking area should step aside because the stones continued to fly from inside the prison. Allegedly, the riots were kindled by a fight breaking out previously among the inmates in the prison. (kmb28)

Police reinforcements backed by armored vehicles arrive outside the Kerobokan prison in Denpasar on Indonesia’s resort island of Bali on the second day of rioting February 23, 2012. Indonesia said on February 23 it would evacuate all 60 foreigners as well as female prisoners from the jail which is currently under control of rioting inmates.

DENPASAR - Indonesian forces backed by water cannons and armoured vehicles were locked in a tense stand-off outside a prison on Bali island Thursday after rioting inmates took control for a second night.

Sidakarya MaskSupplementary Performance to Ritual

(kmb28)

Home builder stocks fell, with the PHLX housing sector index down 1.4 percent. Data showed U.S. home resales surged to a 1-1/2 year high in January but came in below forecasts.

Dell Inc was one of the biggest drags on the S&P, tumbling 5.8 percent to $17.10 in volume 2.5 times above its recent daily aver-age. The world’s No. 3 personal computer maker forecast revenue below expectations late Tuesday. The NYSEArca computer hard-ware index lost 1.8 percent.

After the market’s close, shares of computer maker Hewlett-Packard fell 1.4 percent after reporting quarterly revenue below expectations.

(kmb21)

(kmb25)

‘Pangerupukan’ at Buleleng without Ogoh-OgohSingaraja (Bali Post) –
