SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY

Hillsborough High School opened in 1885 with nineteen students and one teacher. Having occupied a livery stable, a Baptist church, and the upstairs of a newspaper building, students attended classes for the first time in a new school in 1900. The first Hillsborough High School cost $5100 and housed 125 students. The present building, a distinctive Gothic style structure, was completed in 1928 and was one of the four largest high schools in the south. Today we have 1,888 students enrolled. We are proud of our traditions and of the addition of an International Baccalaureate Program. Hillsborough High School has been accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Hillsborough County has a population of 1,229,226. Our school district is the eighth largest in the country, enrolling over 190,000 students. Hillsborough High School is located in an established residential neighborhood near downtown Tampa.

THE INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE PROGRAM

The International Baccalaureate Program (IBP) was established in 1990 with the assistance of a three million dollar federal grant, for the purpose of reducing racial isolation at Hillsborough High School. Presently, 487 students are enrolled in the IBP, and our first graduating class was in 1994. Grade 9 160 students Grade 11 106 students Grade 10 121 students Grade 12 115 students The IBP is a magnet program, drawing students from 17 public middle schools and 16 private schools in Hillsborough Country. Admission is by application only; we admit about 25% of our applicants. As closely as possible, the ethnic makeup of the IBP mirrors that of the community. We have enrolled 61% white, 13% black, 12% Hispanic and 12% Asian. We have approximately 59% females and 41% males. Our students attend IB classes with other IB students, as well as elective classes with traditional program students. They participate widely in sports, student government, honor societies, vocational organizations, service clubs, and fine arts programs such as band, orchestra and drama with traditional students. To achieve a balance between homework and extracurricular activities, we encourage in-depth participation in two or three extracurricular activities, as opposed to wide involvement.

FACULTY

Ours is a highly experienced, enthusiastic, and dedicated staff, chosen, as our students are, from the best in the country. Forty percent of our faculty was department heads in their former schools and three are AP readers. The IBP employs a staff of one administrator, one guidance counselor, one College and Career Counselor and 26 teachers. Fourteen members of our staff are National Board certified, three have doctorate degrees, two have an education specialist degree, and 19 have master’s degrees. The student-teacher ratio is 25:1; class size varies from 15 to 25 students.

THE TRANSCRIPT

The transcript begins with eighth grade. Credit is given for high school level courses taken in eighth grade. The school year lasts 181 days, and each year is divided into two semesters. The average student takes seven courses and one study hall. Traditional program courses meet for 50 minutes each day; IBP courses meet for 93 minutes every other day.

GRADE POINT AVERAGES AND RANK IN CLASS

The grade point average is cumulative, and includes high school courses taken in eighth grade as well as all courses taken in ninth through twelfth grade. All courses taken are included in the computation of the GPA. All Pre-IB and Honors courses are designated by an H or a Y in the course flag column of the transcript, and earn extra weight of .04 per semester per course. All AP (Advanced Placement) courses and IB courses are designated by an H or a Z in the course flag column and earn .08 per course per semester. The weight is added after the GPA is calculated in the usual manner--by dividing grade points by credits. See the transcript for a detailed explanation. Students are ranked countywide. We rank students countywide because we are a magnet school and students are drawn from the entire district. District policy prohibits our ranking students within Hillsborough High School senior class. Final rank is calculated in March of the senior year. Hillsborough High School has two valedictorians and two salutatorians—one from the IBP and one from the traditional senior class.
